  1. It's rice with turmeric, saffron and sometimes annatto. Pretty tasty.
  2. Grilled swordfish, baked potato with cheese, chives, black pepper, or yellow rice, asparagus spears, oysters on the half shell and a California Chardonnay.
  3. No gangs, human trafficking, safer driving, less pollution (not all areas), farangs aren't targets like in big cities and tourist areas, quieter, less accidents.
  4. There are city people and country people. He and his wife have worries, so I suggested living in the country because it's much safer.
  5. Many countries have leaders who or were or are narcissists and sociopaths. History has seen the results.
  6. I meant to live, not visit
  7. That might be true, although they might ask for the birth certificate. Being all western should eliminate the need but I think having a letter from your wife would be insurance.
  8. Always best to have that letter, with her phone number so they can call to verify it, as you don't want to go to the airport and be held up. A passport actually is permission for a child to travel, as it's signed by both parents, but when you're dealing with officials that might not know all the ins and outs, it's best to have everything you can. Stamps on his passport help but again. . I had a letter signed and dated by my ex Thai wife, in Thai, just to make sure, along with her phone number. They did call her from the airport.
  9. I'm thinking it's the women that are the idiots. Why tolerate this type of boy who feels more is necessary?
  10. As there aren't any battlefields here, his lifestyle will be one.
  11. I'd like to see the war sites, so thinking I would first fly to Hanoi, go to Halong Bay for a couple of days, then take Britmans advice and maybe try Trang An, then to Danang. I would like to see more of South Vietnam but only have about a week or so to travel. I love Vietnamese food, and want my GF to try some, along with the coffee there. If I can arrange the transportation a train to those spots you went to would also be good. How was getting the 15 visa on arrival? I'm only going to be there at most 9 days so that would be good. I was going to get the visa online but if it's no problem I might go that route.I did read this though so was thinking of just getting the online one...........American citizens can obtain a visa on arrival (VOA) in Vietnam, but it's generally recommended to apply for an e-visa online beforehand, as VOA is only available in specific situations like departing from a country with no Vietnamese embassy
  12. Problem there, is that many "quality residents", those with that sort of funds, are or were criminals themselves, obtaining that money by taking advantage of others. Many people aren't retiring with 10-25 million baht as savings. And those that retire here on what's asked, aren't riff raff but putting that money into providing for wives and children here, contributing to the Thai economy, besides those that are just here to buy women and go from one to another.
  13. White supremacists will use any means to downplay or deny their actions. Especially ones where murder are involved. Free speech is allowed and they get recruits this way because some people were never taught respect for all races and nationalities as a child, and they bring in those who are weak and seeking attention or already have hatred in their hearts for other races.
  14. Do you really think a woman here is going to pick up a taxi driver here? People flee when they have something to hide. If he was legitimate, he would have notified the police to question her. Taking advantage of a drunk woman is a predator's game. A man wouldn't.
  15. The smartest thing you can do is keep your home in England, so you can return if things aren't to your liking here. Whole different way of life and not for everyone. Seeing you already have a Thai wife, you should know about some of the customs here but to really know them you have to live here awhile, so renting is an option you might consider. Stay out of the big cities and tourist areas, especially for living, and you won't encounter most of the problems. Driving is dangerous everywhere so don't trust anyone on the roads and drive defensively.
  16. Parental citizenship crucial: To be British by birth, one of your parents must be a British citizen or have settled status in the UK at the time of your birth.
  17. What amazes me isn't just the crime against this woman, but the idiocy of a taxi driver doing this after picking up the woman in his cab, which can easily be tracked, and thinking it isn't going to come back to him. It's like the many who rob gold stores after parking their scooters outside in full view of cameras, then going home and not realizing they will soon be visited by the police.
  18. Thinking of going there soon with my girlfriend. Wondering if any have visited there , from here, and where they went, stayed, sights seen etc. I'd like to go to Halong Bay from Hanoi, taking a 2 day boat tour, after seeing Hanoi for a day, then taking a van to Halong Bay, then traveling to Danang and Hue to see the war time areas, memorials etc. Not looking for 5 star resorts but just decent places to stay in those areas, transportation to Danang and Hue, and any other tips. I'm going to apply online for the 30 day visa so I can have it when I arrive instead of waiting for the visa on arrival. My girlfriend doesn't need any visa .
  19. I was asking because I had stomach problems almost as long as I've lived here, and it looks like it was the H Pylori. Up to 70% of people worldwide have it but only affects about 20%, and sometimes can lead to cancer, which is why I was asking. Good luck in your treatment.
  20. The reason it's harder is because care for children pales by comparison to the west. I've never known anyone of my friends or family that didn't learn to swim as a toddler, and never a drowning. When I came here I heard, and hear about them weekly. both children and adults. People drown all over, and it's worse in other countries, but it still comes back to not being taught as young as possible. They put children on scooters here at 8 years old, they can teach them to swim.
  21. When you let down your guard, you allow mishaps. That's why taking breaks every couple of hours is always good advice, even for the best of drivers.
  22. They're unpredictable and incompetent. Cutting people off is a major way accidents and fatalities happen here, as many get dragged underneath trucks and bumped into others on the road because they think they can get by. A scooter should stay to the side, driving in the shoulder if possible. A motorcycle should drive the same way a car does, without weaving. It's their lives they lose, as you can\t compete with an automobile.
