Mass deportation is already being walked back in the Murdoch press: https://www.wsj.com/opinion/donald-trump-immigration-policy-tom-homan-deportation-border-stephen-miller-19e0e963?st=UZw23i&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink This is an opinion piece by the Editorial Board, so it is plenty Trumpy. Haitians in Springfield probably won't be a priority if this is how thing go.

Trump can't run for re-election, so the outrage about Haitians eating dogs and cats is of no further use to him. It was great political theater during the heat of the campaign, but it has already fizzled out. Mike DeWine, Republican Governor of Ohio, stated that the Haitian immigrants were hard workers and urged Trump and Vance to stop telling lies, so there's not much support at the state level to evict them. On balance, rust belt Ohio needs them, although they may tax resources locally. The donor class knows that deporting immigrants will hurt their bottom line with respect to labor costs, so a quiet word with The Donald will be had, if it hasn't already. I doubt he will specifically target them for near-term deportation, but I suspect new policies may affect them to varying degrees mid or longer-term.

Motorbike Insurance when renting a motorbike?
Etaoin Shrdlu replied to bbi1's topic in Insurance in Thailand
Insurers in Thailand do not offer insurance to cover a renter's liability for damage to a motorbike that they rent. Travel insurance offered by offshore insurers usually excludes coverage for third party liability arising out of the use of motor vehicles and would therefore not cover the renter's liability for damages to the rented motorbike itself. The only coverage available to the renter for damage to the motorbike itself and for liability to third parties, would be the insurance that the owner of the motorbike provides. The basic mandatory Por Ror Bor scheme would respond for a limited amount of medical expenses, but may not be adequate or address all liabilities that could arise from an accident. It does not provide any cover for damage to third party property. The voluntary third party liability and physical damage covers may be invalidated for a number of reasons, including exclusions related to commercial use of the vehicle (rental). In my opinion, renting motorbikes in Thailand comes with a large element of risk that can't be transferred. -
I think most of the "illegals" are economic migrants. As long as they can obtain work, they will come. Want to stop migrants from coming to the US to work without proper permission? Mandate the use of E-Verify for all employers, both public and private, and impose meaningful penalties on employers, including potential jail time, for hiring those without permission to work in the US. Without this, the rest, building walls, mass deportations, is just political theater.

Thailand's Expats Urged to Register with TRD for Tax, Says Expert

Yeah, I had no illusions about the DTA over-riding the saving clause. I find it hard to believe anyone would take this approach seriously. -
Why Kamala Harris Lost: The Challenges of a Complex Campaign
Etaoin Shrdlu replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Harris was a very weak candidate and the Democrats made many mis-steps on their way to this outcome. There is lots of blame go around. -
In 2020 we had sore losers. In 2024 it seems we have sore winners.

I upgraded from an Intel mini to the M2 not long ago, so I'll sit this one out. Good that the microphone jack and a couple of USB-C ports have been moved to the front. No SD card reader, though.

Trump Declares Victory and Promises a "Golden Age" for America
Etaoin Shrdlu replied to Social Media's topic in World News
"Speaking to supporters in Iowa, the former president said that if he returns to the Oval Office, he will immediately begin “ideological screening” for all immigrants and bar those who sympathize with Hamas and Muslim extremists." So the thought police, then. And Trump did indeed call for a total ban on Muslims entering the US. He was not able to accomplish this and the result was Executive Order 1379 and subsequent ones. -
Thailand's Expats Urged to Register with TRD for Tax, Says Expert
Etaoin Shrdlu replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Is this the same tax adviser who was telling Americans that their IRA/401k withdrawals were not subject to US Federal income tax due to the operation of the Thai-US DTA and also were not subject to Thai taxation due to the prior-year remittance rule? -
