  3. A dispute between a reporter and a luxury villa executive on Koh Samui island has been amicably resolved following a threatening incident during a construction inspection. The resolution came after both parties met to discuss the matter, leading to an apology and forgiveness. Channel 7 HD reporter, Sitthipong, was following officials from the state land intrusion problem-solving team on July 17 during their inspection of luxury villa construction on Chaweng Noi Hill, Bo Phut. The officials were investigating the potential destruction of natural resources and the environment in the Fourth Army Area. While the reporter and some officials stood at the entrance of the project, a Thai man overseeing the project confronted and threatened the reporter regarding the news coverage. This led to a police complaint and subsequent news coverage about the incident, which included threats made by the man, claiming he had a criminal record and instructing his subordinates to handle the reporter if encountered again. Sitthipong, the Channel 7 HD reporter assigned to Ko Samui, and Narongrit, the villa executive, along with his wife and lawyer, met at Bo Phut Police Station yesterday, July 24. The meeting was mediated by Police Colonel Den Duang Thongsrisuk, the superintendent of Bo Phut Police Station. During the meeting, the villa executive apologised for his inappropriate behaviour and comments towards the reporter. He assured that such actions would not be repeated, reported KhaoSod. Sitthipong accepted the apology and expressed that he held no grudges over the threatening remarks. Both parties then shook hands and smiled, demonstrating mutual forgiveness. “I regret my actions and words. I assure you this will not happen again,” said Narongrit, the villa executive. “I accept the apology and hold no ill will regarding the incident,” Sitthipong responded. In related news, in a landmark verdict, a reporter has been cleared of three counts of defamation, marking a victory against the backdrop of Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP) cases. Despite her pleas, the driver sped off, causing panic on the streets. A Facebook user, Kong Yangyan, shared a nearly seven-minute video of the incident titled, Hit and Run at Wachira Intersection Headed Towards Krung Thon Bridge This Morning. The video vividly captured the woman clinging to the front of the white Honda Brio, registered in Kanchanaburi, while the female driver initially got out and confronted her. The woman on the bonnet accused the driver of a hit-and-run, pointing to marks on the car as evidence. Despite the confrontation, the driver returned to the car and drove off at high speed, ignoring the woman’s presence on the bonnet. The scene caused significant alarm among other road users. Several riders who witnessed the incident attempted to intervene, urging the driver to stop and talk. However, the driver continued driving with the woman still clinging to the front of the vehicle, screaming for help, reported KhaoSod. The tension escalated when the car stopped at a red light. Riders tried to persuade the woman to get out of the car, fearing for her safety. Despite their attempts, the car swerved and sped off again, with the woman eventually losing her grip and falling off. 13. Brit holidaying in Thailand receive news of parents’ death in UK. Photo courtesy of Lewis Barton Facebook A 21 year old Brit holidaying in Thailand received the horrifying news that his parents had died in a tragic crash. Lewis Barton’s parents, 56 year old Christopher Barton and 48 year old Janine Barton were on their motorbike, enjoying a day out at Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England, when they collided with a Ford Focus on the A61 between Wakefield and Barnsley. The impact killed the Bartons instantly, along with 33 year old Shane Roller, his partner 30 year old Shannen Morgan, and their daughters Rubie and Lillie, aged nine and four respectively. The couple’s eldest daughter, 11 year old Poppie, escaped the deadly accident as she had chosen to stay at a friend’s house rather than join her family for the outing. Barton, devastated, flew back home immediately after hearing the tragic news. In a tribute released through West Yorkshire Police, he described his parents as “a loving, caring mum and dad who always put me before everything else.” Neighbours in Barnsley were in shock. An 87 year old woman, Margaret, who lived nearby, remembered the couple fondly. “They loved life, they were always laughing. It’s the biggest tragedy I’ve ever come across.” The Bartons had just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary and had recently finished renovating their garden, planning a big celebration, reported Daily Mail UK. The incident has also left Roller and Morgan’s eldest daughter, Poppie, orphaned. A family friend, Paul Hepple, has been caring for her. Hepple set up a GoFundMe page which has raised over £31,000 (around 1 million baht) for her future care. “Poppie is now staying with her auntie, who is an amazing, loving, and capable guardian. The love and support we have received from all of you have been truly overwhelming.” Shane’s father, Graham Roller, paid a heartfelt tribute to his lost family on Facebook. “Shane wasn’t just a son but an amazing father with a heart of gold. Shannen was an amazing mum, and they adored their little family. They will always be in our hearts and thoughts forever.” by Puntid Tantivangphaisal TOP picture: Brit holidaying in Thailand receive news of parents’ death in UK. 17. Vice Foreign Minister Russ Jalichandra is urging support from both Egypt and Israel to secure the release of the remaining six Thai hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. Over the weekend, Russ held strategic discussions in Cairo and Jerusalem. On Sunday, in Cairo, Russ met with Egyptian officials Ismail Khairat and Ahmed Shaheen. Their talks covered the Israel-Hamas conflict and stressed the importance of securing the Thai hostages' release. The Egyptian government, currently mediating between Israel and Hamas, promised to consider Thailand's request. Besides the hostage issue, the meeting also tackled Thailand's potential membership in the BRICS bloc and celebrated the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Egypt. On Monday, Russ met Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz. The talks in Jerusalem sought Israel's support in freeing the hostages. According to the Thai Foreign Ministry, Katz reiterated Israel's commitment to prioritising the hostages' release. The discussions also marked a milestone—the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations—and explored enhanced cooperation in various sectors including labour, education, agriculture, and construction. Accompanying the ministry delegation, Russ visited Thai workers at David Farm in Israel's Hod Hasharon city. He inquired about their welfare, encouraged them to stay safe during the conflict, and promised comprehensive support. Israel estimates that around 29,000 Thai migrant workers are still in the country, despite the ongoing conflict. Since the war's onset, over 39,000 Palestinians have died, as reported by Gaza's Health Ministry. The conflict began when Hamas launched attacks on October 7, killing approximately 1,200 people, including at least 39 Thais. They also took about 251 hostages, including 31 Thais. While 23 Thai hostages were released in November and two were declared dead this May, six remain in Gaza, reported NATION Thailand. Gaza humanitarian crisis. 19. Thailand anticipates a record influx of tourists from Taiwan and India this year, thanks to its recent visa-free policy. The visa exemption, initiated in late 2023, now allows Taiwanese and Indian tourists an extended stay of 60 days in Thailand, lasting until November 11. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has revealed plans for a reciprocal annual visa-exemption programme with Taiwan and India, set to launch shortly. TAT Taipei office director Sarima Chindamat expressed optimism, estimating Taiwanese visitor numbers could reach one million this year, surpassing the base-case scenario of 700,000. This would exceed the 2019 visitor count of 781,674. "During the first half of 2024, the visa policy resulted in 533,000 Taiwanese visitors, a 34% increase compared to the same period in 2019, which saw 396,000 arrivals," Chindamat stated. An estimated 18 million Taiwanese are expected to travel abroad this year, surpassing the 17 million who did so in 2019. Popular destinations for Taiwanese tourists include Thailand, Japan, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Vietnam. Chindamat noted lucrative market segments such as LGBTQ tourists, active seniors, families, young people, and golfers, with average spending per Taiwanese visitor around 40,000 Baht (US$1,100) per trip. Flight capacity between Taiwan and Thailand has returned to 2019 levels, offering 1.5 million seats. TAT aims to draw over two million Indian tourists this year, supported by a subsidy for Indian meeting and incentive groups visiting during the low season from July to September. TAT Mumbai office director Isada Saovaros reported that tour operators receive 200 Indian Rupees (86 Baht or US$2) per guest for groups of 100 to 1,000 guests staying over four days and three nights. "In the first half of the year, Thailand welcomed 1.04 million Indian tourists, with average spending of 38,000 Baht (US$1,000) per trip," Saovaros added. With an expected 29 million trips by Indian tourists by 2025, TAT New Delhi office offers a similar incentive programme for meeting groups exceeding 100 participants. Siriges-a-nong Trirattanasongpol, TAT New Delhi office director, estimated flight capacity for Indian travellers this year to recover to 90% of 2019 levels. "Besides major destinations like Bangkok and Phuket, we encourage airlines to consider new routes to Krabi and Chiang Mai," she added, targeting Indian tourists from second-tier cities. As Thailand enhances its tourist attractions and accessibility, it aims to solidify its position as a premier travel destination in Asia. 23. A fire broke out at a furniture manufacturing company’s warehouse, spreading to seven adjacent warehouses. The incident, occurring yesterday, is suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit as workers had left for the day. Police Lieutenant Thassana Udomporn from Lam Luk Ka Police Station received a report about the fire at a rental warehouse in Moo 12, Bueng Kham Phroi Subdistrict, Lam Luk Ka District, Pathum Thani Province. Upon receiving the alert, he informed his superiors and rushed to the scene with Deputy Superintendent Prakot Nakyai and over 20 fire engines. The fire started in warehouse B41, owned by a furniture manufacturing company, and rapidly spread to four warehouses on the left and three on the right, engulfing a total of seven warehouses. The full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed. Initial efforts by the fire department succeeded in containing the blaze within a limited area. Paiboon, a 64 year old security guard, reported that the fire likely resulted from an electrical short circuit originating in warehouse B41. At the time, he was patrolling the area and noticed the flames inside the locked warehouse, which prevented him from accessing the interior. The affected warehouse stored flammable materials such as wood and thinner. Fortunately, no workers were present as the company had closed for the day at around 5pm. However, neighbouring companies were still operating, which contributed to the fire spreading to several adjoining warehouses, reported KhaoSod. First responders have documented the scene and taken photographs as evidence. Witnesses will be summoned for questioning to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Additionally, forensic officers will conduct a thorough investigation to uncover the precise cause of the blaze. In related news, a fire broke out at the Pak Kret Police Station, in Nonthaburi on July 16, prompting a swift response from local police, firefighters, and volunteers. 25. Anutin Charnvirakul. Picture courtesy. Bhumjaithai Thailand’s political scene is crackling with anticipation as the Constitutional Court gets ready to rule on Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s qualifications next month. The court’s decision, due on August 14, could potentially reshape the country’s leadership, with Srettha possibly being removed from office. Current political dynamics, including secret and public gatherings, indicate a frenzied effort among key players to position themselves favourably for any upheaval. Deputy Prime Minister and Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul stands out, active on the political front and possibly positioned as a strong candidate to step in. Notably, Anutin has been seen mingling with significant political and business figures, including hosting former PM Thaksin Shinawatra at the Rancho Charnvee Resort in Khao Yai. His active engagement has not gone unnoticed, presenting him as a potentially unifying figure for various factions. Should Srettha be disqualified, the selection of a new PM would be from the existing pool of candidates cleared by the Election Commission. These include Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Chaikasem Nitisiri from the Pheu Thai Party, General Prawit Wongsuwan of the Palang Pracharath Party, Pirapan Salirathavibhaga from the United Thai Nation Party, and, crucially, Anutin himself. Paetongtarn’s immediate assumption of the PM role seems unlikely, given the political turmoil. Chaikasem, meanwhile, faces health challenges. This potentially opens the door for Anutin, especially given his robust relationship with the influential Thaksin despite past frictions within their circles. Anutin’s reputation also extends to his handling of significant national issues, such as the divisive cannabis policy, showcasing his political acumen. His connections, particularly within military ranks, further bolster his prospects. This includes alliances with influential figures like General Sanitchanok Sangkhachan and General Charoenchai Hinthao. With General Prawit also vying for influence, the political chessboard is complex and fluid. However, Anutin’s rising prominence and strategic alliances make him a significant contender, positioning him as a potential stabilising force in Thailand’s political future. As the court’s ruling approaches, Thailand waits with bated breath, watching to see if Anutin Charnvirakul will indeed emerge as the next Prime Minister.
