Picture: Thai Rath Former Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra - ousted in a coup by present incumbent Prayuth Chan-ocha in 2014 has been named in a warrant for her arrest. This comes from the Supreme Court for holders of politcal position based in Sanam Luang. Yingluck was summonsed earlier to appear before the court to answer questions about the alleged illegal transfer of former secretary general of the National Security Commission Thawin Pliansri to be an aide in the prime minister's office. The court noted that Yingluck failed to show up to answer the court's questions so an arrest warrant is now out for her in the case, reported Thai Rath. Two lawyers appeared on her behalf and the case was deferred for a second reading until March 14th at 1.30 pm. Yingluck slipped out of Thailand several years ago and since then has been pictured around the world with her brother, former PM and fugitive Thaksin Shinawatra. She was also named as a defendant in the infamous rice pledging scandal that led to her fleeing her homeland. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-11-22 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. By Thanaphum Charoensombatpanich BTS Group Holdings Plc (BTS) has come out to remind the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) that the local administrative body still owes it 40 billion Baht for the installation of electrical & mechanical and operations of the Green line mass transit system. The issue of the 40 billion Baht has been ongoing for the past 3-years but there has been no resolution yet on the issue despite the publicly listed company raising the issue many a times. Earlier this year in April BTS’ chief executive officer – Surapong Laoha-Unya, had come out to say that BTS would look to sue to recover the funds. The nearly 40 billion Baht that has been incurred comes from 18 billion Baht in operation & maintenance, and just about 20 billion Baht for electrical and mechanical installations. by Tanakorn Sangiam BANGKOK (NNT) - The majority of people in Thailand are satisfied with the hosting of 2022 APEC events, according to a poll, while the Thai government has thanked the general public for being good hosts. A survey commissioned by Bangkok-based polling agency Super Poll shows that 85.6% of the surveyed samples believe Thailand received many benefits from hosting these meetings, while 82.5% are satisfied with Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha’s work, who they believe to be a key person behind the success. The poll indicates that the success of APEC events will benefit the country’s post-pandemic economic recovery, with 65.8% of the surveyed samples highly confident that the Thai economy will improve within the next 6 months. Deputy Government Spokesperson Tipanan Sirichana said the results reflected the general public’s confidence in the Prime Minister. She said the meetings met the set goals and allowed the world community to see Thailand’s strengths. Many economic leaders from Asia-Pacific expressed admiration towards APEC meetings in Thailand, such as Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong who admired the creativity and beauty of Thai cuisine, while President of France Emmanuel Macron pledged his support for the conservation of historical attractions in Thailand and voiced his admiration for Thailand’s soft power such as Muay Thai, street food culture, and tourism. by Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Thai Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha on Saturday (19 Nov), during which Xi congratulated Thailand on its success in hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting. He also stressed the millennia-old friendship between China and Thailand and the fraternity between its two peoples. Over the past ten years since China and Thailand established the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, their traditional friendship has gained even greater strength. Xi noted that the partnership has continued to deepen and bilateral relations have entered a new development stage. At this new historic starting point, China said it will work with Thailand to carry forward the special bond that "China and Thailand are as close as one family." The Thai prime minister in turn extended warm congratulations on the successful 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and on Xi’s election as general-secretary of the CPC Central Committee. He also said Thailand supports the Global Development Initiative and Global Security Initiative put forward by Xi and supports China in playing a greater role in regional and international affairs. President Xi arrived in Bangkok on Thursday (17 Nov) to attend the 29th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting. Delivering a speech Friday at the meeting, Xi called for building an Asia-Pacific community with a shared future. In his speech, Xi stressed the need to follow the spirit of the Asia-Pacific family, look after one another like passengers in the same boat, and steadily move toward an Asia-Pacific community with a shared future. He also said that "over the past decades, robust economic cooperation in the region has created the ’Asia-Pacific miracle’ admired across the world. Asia-Pacific cooperation has taken deep roots in the hearts of the people." On Saturday, Xi said that free and open trade and investment are among the purposes and principles of APEC, and an important pillar in the realization of the Putrajaya Vision 2040. Additionally, the Chinese president stressed the importance of upholding true multilateralism and defending the multilateral trading system, upholding inclusiveness for the benefit of all, and upholding open regional cooperation for the prosperity of the Asia-Pacific. IMF expects Thai economy to outperform global peers in 2023 by Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva was recently in Thailand as a participant in APEC 2022. by Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva was recently in Thailand as a participant in APEC 2022. The IMF has disclosed its projection for Thailand’s economic growth in 2023, when Thailand’s GDP is expected to outperform global peers. Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha has been briefed on the IMF’s report on the forecast for Thailand’s GDP growth in 2023. The agency projects that Thai GDP will grow by 3.7% next year, which will be an improvement over this year’s 2.8% growth. The IMF expects Thailand’s unemployment rate to be the lowest in the Asia-Pacific region, at 1.0%. Thailand is one of only few countries the IMF expects to experience economic expansion amid a global slowdown. Said economic slowdown has been attributed to inflationary challenges and heightened living costs. The IMF’s projections illustrate the significance that clear government policies have on the Thai economy’s situation. The government has been able to manage the spread of COVID-19 and keep the situation under control. It also worked rapidly to revive the economy by preparing the tourism sector to be ready to accommodate tourists once the Covid situation improved. This effort initially took the form of the Phuket Sandbox program and gradually culminated in the full and careful reopening of the country to travelers. Measures to attract investors, experts, and high-potential individuals to Thailand have also been implemented. The IMF forecasts the economies of most APEC members are slowing down. It also says 1 in 3 economies around the world is entering a recession. World GDP is expected to expand by 2.7% in 2023, compared to 3.2% this year. China Thailand Photo:VCG By Global Times China-Laos-Thailand high-speed railway is expected to play an important role in enhancing regional connectivity, further slashing transportation time and cost from the current level, a senior Thai researcher stated. Although the project is still under construction, once completed it will become part of the backbone infrastructure for international trade between the two countries, especially for perishable goods such as agricultural produce and high value added items for which time saving and affordable transportation are critical factors to enhance trade and deepen supply chain integration, Nattaporn Triratanasirikul, deputy managing director of Bangkok-based Kasikorn Research Center (KResearch), told the Global Times over the weekend. China and Thailand on Saturday agreed to build a more stable, prosperous and sustainable China-Thailand community with a shared future, which observers see as a crucial breakthrough that will further enhance already sound bilateral relations to a new, strategic height. The China-Laos high-speed railway, opened to service in December 2021, has already benefited Thailand, according to Triratanasirikul. The railway has opened a new transportation route that will help cut land transportation costs by approximately 30 percent and save transportation time by roughly 50 percent, as estimated by KResearch. By Adam Judd Thailand - Thai Public Health Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said today to the Thai media that in his opinion cannabis cannot be reverted back into an illegal narcotic drug and he is not overly concerned with a proposal by cannabis opponents to try to ban the plant entirely again. Monday, (November 21st) Mr. Anutin, the main figure behind cannabis being originally decriminalized in Thailand in June, revealed to the press his thoughts about the meeting of Thailand’s Narcotics Control Board tomorrow (November 22nd). Mr. Anutin said, “There will be two issues which opponents of the legislation of cannabis who are suing me will pursue, the first being a proposal to the Narcotics Control Board to revert cannabis to an illegal narcotic, which would immediately criminalize possession, sales, and cultivation. The second issue will be about the Notification of the Public Health on Controlled Herbs in general and overall regulations around the plant (cannabis).” When Anutin was asked by the Associated Thai Press if the Narcotics Control Board will turn cannabis back into an illegal drug Mr. Anutin said, “If you ask me I have to say it cannot be turned into an illegal drug again. There are too many businesses, farmers, consumers, medical patients, doctors, and more relying on the plant for their health and their income.” Full story: https://thepattayanews.com/2022/11/21/thailands-narcotics-control-board-to-discuss-proposal-by-cannabis-opponents-to-recriminalize-the-plant-tomorrow/ -- © Copyright The Pattaya News 2022-11-22 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
