Real estate sector views Cabinet endorsement positively by Namo Vananupong BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet recently endorsed the drafting of a ministerial regulation that will enable certain foreigners to purchase 1 rai of land in Thailand. by Namo Vananupong BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet recently endorsed the drafting of a ministerial regulation that will enable certain foreigners to purchase 1 rai of land in Thailand. The buyer would need to invest at least 40 million baht in Thailand and retain the investment for at least 3 years. The Thai real estate sector has given a positive nod to this development, saying the policy will contribute to economic growth. Thai Condominium Association president Phiraphong Charun-ek said the condominium market and market for other properties are expected to return to their pre-pandemic status next year. The value of the residential property market is expected to reach 400 to 450 billion baht next year. Meanwhile, the market for foreign-owned condominium units is growing at 5-7% per year. Citing the recent Cabinet approval for foreign ownership of land, Mr. Phiraphong said this is a good policy that will push economic growth further. He said the Thai real estate sector will be commissioning construction projects continually to meet the new demand from foreigners. This would, in turn, create more employment. He said homes priced above 20 million baht stand to benefit from the upcoming ministerial regulation. According to Mr. Phiraphong, Chinese buyers make up the no. 1 foreign group buying Thai real estate. This is followed in respective order by buyers from Singapore, Hong Kong, Europe, Russia, and Taiwan. He expects the condominium market to grow by 10% next year, provided that China relaxes its travel restrictions. The association president also said he wanted the government to extend the implementation period for reduced transfer and mortgage registration fees. He said these measures should be extended until 2023. by Tanakorn Sangiam BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Interior has launched a campaign against drugs for government officials, as it aims to ensure clean practices among state agencies. Any government officer found involved in drug cases will face legal prosecution and stringent disciplinary actions. The Ministry of Interior has launched a so-called house clean-up campaign against drug involvement, as part of the “cleanup before crackdown” policy. This campaign aims to ensure zero drug involvement by government officials, as the government is looking to launch a national drug suppression campaign. Permanent Secretary for Interior Suttipong Juljarern said this campaign demonstrates the ministry’s commitment to the anti-drug effort while providing rehabilitation services for drug users. The ministry has instructed related agencies to complete the Re-X-Ray operation against drug abuse by the end of this month, with further investigation to be immediately launched after any drug-related arrests. Provinces have been instructed to ensure the preparedness of rehabilitation facilities and staff to accommodate drug addicts seeking treatments, with a goal to help users recover from their addiction and return to normal livelihoods without a relapse. Every province and district has been asked to work together with local partners to raise public awareness on the ways they can submit tips and information on drug cases, which include the 1567 24-hour hotline for Damrongtham Center. Thai opposition parties will submit a motion to the House Speaker in mid-November, seeking a general censure debate on the government, without a vote, to “grill” it over illegal gambling and drug abuse issues and to offer recommendations to the government. Opposition and Pheu Thai Party Leader Chonlanan Srikaew said Saturday that he expects the censure debate to take place in the middle of December, which he admitted might not be the optimum timing, as people would be in a festive mood ahead of Christmas and New Year and might not pay attention to the debate. He pointed out that, if the opposition does not seize the opportunity now, they might miss the chance altogether, because Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha might dissolve the House after the APEC Summit in Bangkok next month, before the end of its term. Effective today (Saturday), cannabis and hemp seeds can be shipped to Thailand from abroad by air, sea or overland, instead of by air alone, as previously stipulated. The number of people in Thailand suffering from mental problems rose from 1.3 million in 2015 to 2.3 million last year, while the number of suicides is also on the increase. These alarming figures suggest the country’s mental health is a ticking time bomb that needs to be tackled urgently to avoid the disastrous effects of an explosion. Wasted lives One mother told Thai PBS World of her anguish as she watches her son’s life spiral out of control after he chose a path of drug abuse to deal with his mental issues. “I noticed the change in his behavior, but could not afford treatment,” the mother said on condition of anonymity.
