Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath reported that police officers from the Anti Corruption and Misconduct Suppression Division arrested the dean of the faculty of political sciences and the acting head of the dean's office at Burapha University in Saensuk district of Chonburi on Thailand's eastern seaboard. The arrest concerns complaints received and investigated upon by the authorities that millions of baht went missing from a 1.1 billion baht Groundwater Resource Management fund back in January 2018. Investigations showed that three foreign lecturers had supposedly been paid 150,000 baht each to come to Thailand. But the reality was that the three who had been paid 450,000 baht in total had arrived in Thailand in February 2017 and left the same month. They had not been back since. In addition the police say they have evidence that many foreigners paid 30,000 to 40,000 baht for a training seminar that never took place. There was only evidence that they had booked rooms. There had been no seminar face to face or online. And there had been no foreigners attending. Dean Theerapong Bualao, 48, and Ms Sayaphat Kitikittisarawanno, 46, face multiple corruption charges including embezzlement of funds. They have denied everything and after fingerprinting at Saensuk police station in the Bang Saen area were released pending further inquiries. Pol Maj-Gen Jaroonkiat Pankaew said that 47 projects were investigated and 8 showed evidence of illegality in that there was "a hidden agenda for personal gain". Investigations are expanding. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-10-13 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. About 70 temples and historical sites in Ayutthaya province, located outside the city’s ancient walls, are submerged and at risk of collapse if the flooding persists, according to Pattarapong Kao-ngern, director of Ayutthaya Historical Park. He said that the foundations of temples and historical sites remain strong, but may be eroded by the floodwater and that may lead to the collapse of the main structures. He also said that, even though there are sandbag flood walls to protect these places and water is being drained out, it still seeps through underground and this will affect their foundations, hence, the need to assess the damage and make repairs once the water has receded. It happened in a car parking lot in Soi Patraniwet in Bang Muang sub-district. It took an hour before the man gave up the child to his mother and laid down his weapon. North Samrong police had been alerted to the incident at 2.30 am yesterday. The suspect was taken to calm down at the police station. He wants his wife back to help him look after their children. The father of the man spoke of a long history of trouble between his son and his wife stretching back ten years. A general view shows voting results during a UN General Assembly emergency meeting to discuss Russian annexations in Ukraine at the UN headquarters in New York City on October 12, 2022. The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday overwhelmingly voted to condemn Russia’s annexations of parts of Ukraine after Moscow vetoed a similar effort in the Security Council. Ed JONES / AFP Thailand has abstained, as did China and India, in a vote on the UN resolution not to recognise the four regions of Ukraine which Russia has claimed, following referenda held late last month. The UN General Assembly passed the resolution by a large majority on Wednesday, demanding that Moscow reverse course on its “attempted illegal annexation” of parts of Ukraine. The results were 143 member states in favour, with five voting against and 35 abstentions. The countries voting against were Belarus, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Nicaragua, Russia and Syria. Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath reported on a can of worms being increasingly revealed at several police stations in Ranong in the south of Thailand. Last week a senior sergeant major called Thapanat was investigated for stealing seven state own guns from the armory and dealing in methamphetamine. He also tested positive for taking the drug. He is under suspension. Three of the weapons have been discovered. In latest developments the Ranong provincial chief Pol Maj-Gen Chertpong Chewprecha said that Thapanat had implicated a sergeant at the Pak Nam Ranong station as being involved in the gang selling guns for meth. He has been interrogated and has also tested positive for using the drug. Now it is thought that 4-5 others are involved in a gang that comprises police and members of the public. Warrants are pending in the scandal that comes after the mass shooting in the NE last week and a crackdown on guns and drugs. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-10-13 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. The shocking mass killing of mostly very young children in Nong Bua Lam Phu province has exposed far-ranging problems in Thai society, law enforcement and healthcare. Under the spotlight are not only the country’s drug plague but also deep flaws in the police force, lax gun laws, mental health issues and a shortage of psychiatrists. “If something like this happens overseas, a psychological study [of the perpetrator] is conducted immediately to get to the root of the problem,” said Dr Deja Piyavhatkul, a former medical lecturer and psychiatrist. Dr Deja explained that such an investigation grants insights into the killer’s mental state, enabling authorities to draw up guidelines that can help prevent a repeat of such terrible violence in the future. “Such incidents are in fact preventable. The signs can usually be noticed months ahead,” the doctor said. by Namo Vananupong UBON RATCHATHANI (NNT) - The deputy prime minister responsible for water-related affairs has inspected conditions in Ubon Ratchathani and Sisaket. Relevant agencies were promptly ordered to deliver assistance to flood victims to their best extent. Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon visited Ubon Ratchathani and Si Saket provinces in his capacity as the head of the National Water Command (NWC). He was briefed on the water management effort for the Mun and Chi river basins by officials from relevant agencies. Ubon Ratchathani was impacted by floods triggered by storm Noru in late September. Inundations then persisted due to rainfall triggered by a monsoon trough. The water amounts in the Chi and Mun river basins exceed the average by 25%. However, the area flooded is less than that of 2011 and 2019 owing to the government’s implementation of 13 measures devised for the rainy season. The two river basins were also managed by an NWC forward command that enabled swift and effective responses to the water situation. State assistance is now being delivered to flood victims in 19 districts that have been declared disaster-hit areas. Post-flood rehabilitation plans have also been established. Gen. Prawit visited flood victims in the capital district of Ubon Ratchathani before traveling to Si Saket. In the latter province, he was also briefed about the local water situation. The deputy prime minister also gave moral support to flood victims in Si Saket’s Kanthararom district.
