Graeme Jenkinson, a New Zealander at Voova Group that is based in Pattaya posed the question: "What price a child?" The topic is one that won't go away. Only last week a seven year old child died after being left in a van all day at a private Chonburi school. The mother said that they paid good money for an expensive education - and of course they expected so much more. A teacher and a driver failed to notice a child in a rear seat, until the end of the day. The incoming chief of the RTP Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat has taken an interest in the issue but critics say it will only be a crackdown and soon forgotten - until the next tragedy. Mr Jenkinson said that there had been 129 instances of children left in motor vehicles between 2014 and 2020. Six had died. Most of these had occurred at schools where the period of time can be all day leading to a horrific death by heat and suffocation that leaves families and school communities devastated. Voova are so concerned about the issue that they are slashing their prices in a bid to get more schools onboard with a system that offers a total solution to the problem of children being forgotten in vans as well as a host of other safety issues. One of the features of the system allows parents to monitor where their child is in real time. Also the scanning of a QR code is necessary meaning that a pupil who has been registered as being on the bus will be flagged up to the school if they have not arrived in class within 15 minutes. There are multiple checks and balances to ensure that it is not one act of carelessness that leads to tragedy. The company provides full training for management, drivers and monitors. Mr Jenkinson said that his organisation had contacted around 200 international schools in Thailand and had done demonstrations of the management system at about 100. Yet only two - including Bangkok Prep in Bangkok and one other school in the Thai capital - had taken them up on their offer. Following last week's tragedy in Chonburi Mr Jenkinson said that Bangkok Patana - perhaps the most well known British International School in Thailand - had been in touch. They have a fleet of more than 200 mini-vans owned privately that ferry children to and from school, he said. Voova Group is a Thai owned company that has its roots in the UK. Mr Jenkinson said that mostly it appeared to be a cost issue that made schools reluctant to adopt a more comprehensive system to go with measures already in place. Some will say that just a head count is necessary; but the system means that if one thing goes wrong there are others there as back-up to prevent the unthinkable happening. Voova has been trying to convince schools for the last six years to adopt their system, said Mr Jenkinson, and with the pandemic affecting enrolment safety has been put further on the back burner due to costs. He also said that transport companies claim that they have systems in place saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it". But he says that many systems are inherently flawed and need an upgrade. He pointed to the devastating costs from litigation that schools could face if they go cheap and get things wrong. Voova normally charges 2,000 baht per vehicle as a set up fee then charges 1,500 baht per month per vehicle thereafter. Mr Jenkinson told ASEAN NOW after last week's tragedy: "We are currently sending emails out to each of those 200 odd schools again offering to give them the system, which is multi-lingual, at no charge, for six months. The only cost they will have is a one-time set-up fee of 2,000 baht per vehicle which includes all training for all staff - management, drivers and monitors. That's it! What cost for a student's life?" Mr Jenkinson is convinced schools that adopt the system will not be disappointed and parents will have far greater peace of mind. The goal was announced by Mr. Sathien Charoenruen, governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan during a meeting of the Road Safety Administration Center on Monday (Sept 5). The goal is to reduce the rate of the deaths as a result of road traffic accidents to 12 per 100,000 population by the end of 2027, Governor Sathien told the meeting. Thanwa Saengsuwan, 22, walked straight into the lion's den - he was arrested at the police station when he happened to go there to sort out a road traffic accident. He had to admit it was him when shown the CCTV. He said he'd been with his younger brother aged 17 who was subsequently picked up at home along with two of the plants. Clothes and a motorcycle used in the theft were taken into evidence. They admitted everything and were charged with theft at night using a conveyance. They said they were going to raise the plants themselves. Thanwa said he didn't know who the plants belonged to though he admitted to having lived in the area before and knowing the owner. If he'd known they belonged to the house owner he wouldn't have taken them. Civil engineers were trying to determine the structural integrity of the building before decided if it could be repaired or would have to be demolished. Barriers had been erected amid fears of more collapse. The Honda owner Anucha, 38, was still in a state of shock contemplating how he had been both fortunate to avoid death and unlucky in other ways. He said that he had opened the hood of his car to put in a new battery. But he had forgotten to bring his spanner so he went back home to retrieve it. He'd not walked ten steps before the wall came crashing down. He said he didn't normally park there but it was close to his home and convenient for a battery change. But there was further misfortune for Anucha. He said that his insurance had run out at 4 pm and the wall collapsed at 9.20 pm. He wanted a gold bar but after being told they had none he was shown, and turned down, jewelry. He seemed like an ordinary customer and came back a second time and was shown 5 baht and 10 baht weight gold necklaces. Suriya handed over a ten baht weight necklace - worth in the region of 300,000 baht - and saw that the man was getting excited and his hands were shaking. Added to the fact that he had taken the best part of an hour to decide what to buy - most unusual - Suriya secretly beckoned to staff that something untoward may be about to happen. It did. The man said: "Phee phom khor na?' (may I have this?) and ran out with the ten baht necklace. Siriya chased him and was assisted by a security guard and a member of the public in apprehending the thief in Pahonyothin Soi 50. Surasak Siribun, 29, said he is a van driver and didn't have enough money. He has many problems not least of all a 100,000 baht online gambling debt. He said that his girlfriend in Sakhon Nakhon had told him not to do anything rash but he saw no way out. So he parked his van outside the nearby market and prepared to rob the gold shop. Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath reported that Tha Muang police in Kanchanaburi, western Thailand, were called after a collision between a motorcycle and a car on Route 323 at 7.40 pm yesterday. They found a Honda Wave on its side and lots of bits of the bike over the road. Saichon, 48, a man from Suphanburi, was dead from multiple injuries. He had a tattoo of a growling tiger on his chest. Thai Rath didn't explain the significance of this, though they mentioned it several times. Ten meters away was a stopped Honda Yaris with extensive damage to the front and bits of bike embedded. The unnamed driver was only slightly injured but taken to hospital. A witness said that he saw the motorcyclist at the edge of the road going the wrong way before the collision. Daily News reported sad news from Mae Ramphung beach in Muang district of Rayong on Thailand's eastern seaboard after a turtle washed up dead. Environmentalists, vets and fishing experts were called after a tourist found the creature outside the Rayong Beach Hotel on Monday afternoon. It was 50 cms long, 30 cms wide and weighed about 10 kilos. Vet Thanaphan Chomcheun said that it was a green sea turtle (chelonia mydas or tao tanu in Thai) aged about 5. Its sex could not be determined. The body had no injuries and an initial examination of the intestinal contents revealed nothing untoward.
