  7. By Thai Newsroom Reporters CARETAKER PRIME MINISTER Prawit Wongsuwan has been obviously showing his ability to keep the country moving on without Prayut Chan-o-cha as head of government, said a noted academic over the weekend. Rangsit University political scientist Wanwichit Boonprong concluded that Prawit has looked more agile, self-confident and physically stronger than ever since he became caretaker premier to run the country whilst Prayut has been ordered by court to stop performing as head of government pending a court ruling on his eight-year tenure maximumly provided by law. “Like it or not, Prawit has apparently proven himself capable of keeping the country moving on without Prayut,” the academic put it. Prawit who claimed to be running the country virtually with the heart and not with any physical force would not only reshuffle the cabinet but strengthen the unity and efficiency of the largest coalition Palang Pracharath Party of which he concurrently acts as top leader only if Prayut’s eight-year rule is finally judged by the Constitutional Court to have already ended since August 24, Wanwichit said. TNR Staff THE TOURISM Authority of Thailand (TAT) expects a busy high season this year with both Thais and foreigners travelling extensively after Covid control measures were relaxed from April onwards with the country fully opened to tourism in July, INN News said Saturday evening (Sept. 3). Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT’s governor, said a large number of foreign tourists had started coming to Thailand with the weaker baht to US dollar exchange rate spurring tourism. The Bank of Thailand set this rate at 36.804 baht to the dollar yesterday. TAT is also mounting promotional activities together with the private sector to ensure that foreigners holidaying in Thailand during the high season stay longer. TAT projects a big improvement in the second half of this year with around 7.5 million foreign tourists expected to come to Thailand. If arrivals in the first half are added this year’s total would be 9.62 million. 13. By Thai Newsroom Reporters FORMER PRIME MINISTER Abhisit Vejjajiva admitted today (Sept. 3) it would be very unlikely for him to become head of government again in the foreseeable future. Abhisit said his chances of being named premier again with supportive votes from MPs and senators would be utterly slim, compared to others though, he said, he may have readied himself for the top post of government. The former Democrat Party leader apparently referred to Bhumjaithai Party leader/Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and caretaker prime minister Prawit Wongsuwan who would be more likely to secure enough votes from the legislators to become head of government if Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s eight-year rule is finally judged by court to have ended since August 24. 19. The student debt forgiveness campaign believes the budget Thailand has set to reduce inequality – 700 billion baht – should be more than enough to ensure education is “really free”. “It’s not about whether our country has enough money but more about our country’s money management and allocation,” said Prim Maneechote, a member of the #SLFdebtforgiveness campaign said on during an interview with Inskru. This platform normally brings teachers together to share ideas and experiences Prim said the money that millions of Thais owe to the Student Loan Fund (SLF) should, in fact, not be considered loans. “They would not have had to borrow money if the government offered free education,” Prim said. “Why do young people have to take loans just because they want to study?” Assoc Prof Dr Sustarum Thammaboosadee, who teaches at Thammasat University’s College of Interdisciplinary Studies, expressed a similar view in an interview with BBC Thai. “In the upcoming fiscal year [starting October 1], the government has allocated 700 billion baht to reduce inequality. This budget is separate from basic welfare such as subsidies for the universal healthcare coverage scheme or monthly payments for the elderly,” he said. Photo from สำนักข่าวราษฎร – Ratsadon News A ruling from the Constitutional Court on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s 8-year term in office, whether it is in his favour or not, will be the “breaking point” for the Thai society, claimed United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) leader Jatuporn Prompan yesterday (Sunday). Jatuporn and Nititorn Lamlua led a small group of protesters, who gathered at Ratchaprasong intersection in the heart of Bangkok today, to demand the ouster of the so-called “3-Ps”, who include Prime Minister Prayut, Acting Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan and Interior Minister Anupong Paochinda. The UDD leader said that the number of protesters is not the issue, adding that they will be able to mobilise more people at the right time “which is not necessary yet.” He did, however, hint that the right time for mass protests will be when the Constitutional Court issues its ruling on Prayut’s term in office, expected sometime in the next 4-5 weeks.
