by Tanakorn Sangiam BANGKOK (NNT) - Ministers responsible for forestry from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) have endorsed a sustainable forest management plan for member economies, in an effort to tackle climate change, as they convened in Chiang Mai at the fifth Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Forestry (MMRF). Thailand’s Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Varawut Silpa-archa said the participating ministers had agreed on the principle to mutually promoting a balance between the economy, environment, and society, by working to achieve sustainable forest management. He said this principle will provide more opportunities for legal wood trade while suppressing illegal logging. It aims to help increase green spaces, conserve biodiversity, and mitigate the effects of climate change. Thailand on this occasion presented its Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) economic model as a supplementary model to promote sustainable forest management among APEC economies, using modern technology and innovations to help increase product value and support businesses. The implementation of the BCG model presented at this meeting highlights the role of forests in capturing greenhouse gases, helping achieve carbon neutrality and net zero emission goals. APEC economies have successfully increased forest areas within the region beyond its 2020 target, with a total of 27.9 million forest areas reported. Member states are now working on the Chiang Mai declaration, which is expected to pave the way for more cooperation on balanced forest management and legal trade of forest products. by Tanakorn Sangiam BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet has approved subsidy packages worth 2.9 billion baht for electric vehicle (EV) sales. The government aims for this campaign to help bring down the EV prices in the market. The Cabinet in its weekly meeting today approved subsidy packages for electric vehicles as announced by Government Spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri. These packages, worth 2.9 billion baht, will be offered at different values based on the size and specifications of eligible EV models, covering both sedans and motorcycles. The biggest packages at 150,000 baht per vehicle will be offered for 10-passenger vehicles, with a battery size of 30 kilowatt hours or more. Packages of the same subsidy are offered for domestically manufactured pickup trucks in the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) category, with a battery size of 30 kilowatt hours or more. These trucks must have a suggested retail price of less than 2 million baht. Electric cars with up to 10-passenger capacity, but with battery sizes smaller than 30 kilowatt hours are eligible for a 70,000 baht subsidy. The smallest packages at 18,000 baht per vehicle will be offered to battery-operated electric motorcycles in the BEV category, with a suggested retail price not exceeding 150,000 baht. All of these packages will be available to eligible persons, according to the Excise Department’s announcement. This includes manufacturers and authorized dealers. These entities must work with the department to establish mutual agreements, and file individual requests for each vehicle model. The Excise Department will analyze the retail pricing structure from these filings to make sure that buyers benefit from EV subsidies, before approving any packages. Pheu Thai party leader Chonlanan Srikaew, right, Prayut, left. Photo: Workpointtoday.com By Thai Newsroom Reporters THE PHEU THAI-LED opposition bloc has encouraged Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to step down now that he has been ordered by court to stop performing his duties as of Wednesday (August 24) so that another person could quickly be found to take his place. During a press conference at parliament, opposition leader/Pheu Thai party leader Chonlanan Srikaew suggested Prayut call it quits now, given the order of the Constitutional Court for him to immediately stop performing as premier until a court ruling on his eight-year rule has been delivered. Though the Constitutional Court’s ruling is largely expected within next month, the case filed by the opposition bloc could be immediately lifted, sparing the judges the burden of determining whether Prayut’s eight-year rule maximumly provided by law may already have ended today, only if the embattled premier stepped down now, the opposition leader said.
