  6. By Nop Meechukhun National – The Thai Department of Medical Sciences today, June 24th, reported the rapid spread of BA.4 and BA.5 strain of Covid-19 which has now reached 200 cases in Thailand. The Department’s Director General Supakit Sirilak said to the Associated Press that only the Omicron variant is classified as a variant of concern. Now there are Omicron’s subspecies or descendant lineages, namely BA.2.12.1, BA.2.9.1 BA.2.11 BA.2.13, and BA.4 and BA.5. But, the BA.4 and BA.5 is the most concerning subspecies strain as it mutates in the L452R position, which was the same as the Delta variant, causing more harm to human lungs than previous strains according to Supakit. Moreover, there is a concern that the new strain will spread as rapidly and as virulently as the Delta variant. 13. Pheu Thai party renews call for PM to scrap emergency decree The opposition Pheu Thai party has renewed its call for Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to revoke the Emergency Decree, claiming that the special law, which was imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19 more than two years ago, is no longer relevant because the status of the pandemic is steadily improving. Pheu Thai party leader Chonlanan Srikaew said today (Friday) that retaining the law, as the country is moving towards classifying COVID-19 as an endemic disease, will be counter-productive to economic development and rehabilitation of the country, as well as public participation in matters of public interest. A statement, issued by the party today, said that the decree was supposed to contain the pandemic, but it has been misused, through the issuance of a regulation to control public gatherings and arrests of students and many other people who defied the decree. 22. by Krajangwit Johjit CHIANG RAI (NNT) - Chiang Rai province hosted an event to commemorate the 4th anniversary of the two-week rescue operation at Tham Luang Khun Nam Nang Non cave, bringing together the 12 schoolboys rescued from the cave, their parents, and their rescuers. On Wednesday (June 22), the former Wild Boar footballers returned to the cave in Mae Sai district to commemorate the rescue drama as a sign of gratitude to all the people who saved their lives in 2018, particularly former Royal Thai Navy SEAL member Saman Kunan, who perished while attempting to reach the boys. Saman died of asphyxiation on July 6, 2018, while returning to the cave’s staging area after delivering diving cylinders and attempting a rescue. Divers from around the world spent the next four days rescuing all 12 boys and their coach from the cave. The Buddhist rite, which was presided over by Dr. Chaweewan Khampha, president of the Poultry Promotion Association of Thailand, was held in front of Tham Luang cave. Participants gave alms to 39 Buddhist monks and took part in a traditional ceremony to bless the survivors and those involved in the rescue effort. Since passages within the Tham Luang’s complex are flooded during the rainy season, the cave is currently off-limits to tourists. Officials said the entrance to the cave is expected to reopen in October or as soon as the weather permits the resumption of tourism in the area. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-06-24 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 23. Thai Rice Producers Affirm No Price Increases for Packaged Rice by Krajangwit Johjit BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai Rice Packers Association has dismissed reports of price increases of up to 30 baht per 5-kilogram package for packaged rice. 24. by Krajangwit Johjit BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai Rice Packers Association has dismissed reports of price increases of up to 30 baht per 5-kilogram package for packaged rice. The association’s honorary president, Somkiat Makcayathorn, stated that there would be no price increase despite a recent increase in transportation, packaging, and raw materials costs. Somkiat, who is also the chief executive officer of a major producer of packaged rice, Patum Rice Mill and Granary Plc, explained that rice packers would only reduce the offered discount, resulting in higher retail prices that would still be lower than the suggested prices printed on the packaging. In addition, he stated that rice packers would discontinue sale promotion strategies such as "buy one, get one free" offers, large discounts, and suggested retail prices. According to Somkiat, the producers of packaged rice are competing with others by maintaining low prices, and this situation will persist throughout the second half of the year. He went on to say that rice packers have chosen to absorb the higher costs and business losses as market competition has intensified. Meanwhile, rice mill operators have reported that rice supply is increasing as more off-season rice harvests flood the market, citing the recent decrease in rice paddy price from 9,600 to 9,900 baht per ton to 9,000 to 9,200 baht. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-06-24 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
