  1. Two police officers in Nakhon Pathom province were transferred to “inactive posts” Friday at the operations centre of Nakhon Pathom provincial police office, pending an investigation into an incident in which they are accused of assaulting three youths. The incident took place late at night of April 30th, in front of the Prueksa Ville 44 housing estate on Borommaratchachonnani Road in Sam Phran district. Keep up to date with all things Thailand - Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe The two officers, Pol Cpt Chaiyapote Kotesamran, a deputy inspector with the Sam Phran police, and his subordinate, Lance Corporal Panadon Changkhien, went to Borommaratchachonnani Road to investigate gangs of youths reported to have been in the area, after receiving a 191 call. Upon their arrival at the scene, they did not find any gangs, but decided to park the police pickup truck with the light flashing. A motorcycle headed towards them, travelling in the wrong lane, and it was stopped by the two policemen. 5. Global price rises: Can we get by on local produce in Thailand? ASEAN NOW Op-Ed It is plainly obvious that walking around your local supermarket, the prices of the day-to-day items we need have risen. 6. ASEAN NOW Op-Ed It is plainly obvious that walking around your local supermarket, the prices of the day-to-day items we need have risen. As we are reading daily, after more than three months of the war in Ukraine, the media, economists and particularly aid agencies are telling us that the world is facing merging crises that could lead to a global food emergency. Fertilizers and food prices were already surging to record levels before the conflict, due to shipping constraints, high energy costs, the pandemic and natural disasters. Sanctions, import bans, destruction of infrastructure, a refugee crisis, and supply chain disruptions due to the conflict in Ukraine, are all adding to the global food prices and risking shortages. Importantly, higher prices and potentially falling inventories could mean greater food insecurity in the US and around the world. Cooking oil up by 50% Last week in Vietnam, they reported that a liter of the most affordable vegetable oil now costs $2.07-2.38. That is a whopping 50 percent higher than at the beginning of this year and double the price two years ago. Producers blame the rising prices on higher input costs. Price of palm oil, a leading edible oil, has quadrupled in the last two years. Rice Exporters worried too Thai media reported last week that rice exporters have expressed growing concerns about shipment prospects in the second quarter, as a sharp rise in domestic prices may lead importers to balk at buying Thai grains. Keep up to date with all things Thailand - Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe India, the world’s top buyer of palm, soybean, and sunflower oil, is suffering from rising prices following supply disruptions caused by the conflict in Ukraine, adverse weather in South America and a labor shortage in Malaysia. 75 % from Ukraine and Russia Ukraine and Russia used to account more than 75 percent of global exports of sunflower oil, one of the world’s four leading edible oils, while Brazil and Argentina are among the largest soybean oil suppliers to India. The same shortage has happened in Europe, with British supermarkets rationing cooking oil and prices quadrupling in Spain following panic buying. Business website Trading Economics expects palm oil prices to scale a new high of $1,665 in the next 12 months. Ukraine is also unable to export wheat as their ships are stranded in ports. Thailand has a homegrown industry At least Thailand is the number one exporter of rice in the world with Vietnam second. One of Thais’ main staple diets is rice. We also produce Coconut oil which apparently you can substitute for cooking oil. Back in August 2021, the production volume of coconut oil in Thailand amounted to around 4,245 metric tons, which indicated an increase from previous years. Hopefully, we will be able to rely on homegrown items from Thailand, however certain imported products will surge, and stocks are likely to be scarce. So, it is back to the local markets to buy homegrown fruit, vegetables, chicken, and meat, and try to stay away from imported goods for the next few years. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-05-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 9. By Editor Somkiat Chantra, the first Thai rider to win a race in the world championships for motorcycles, has been hailed by the government as a “national hero.” Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn made the remark during a Tuesday (17 May) meeting with the Idemitsu Honda Team Asia driver following his third-place finish at the French Grand Prix in Le Mans on Sunday (15 May). It was Somkiat’s third podium finish of the season, following victories in Indonesia and Argentina. Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe With his victory at the Indonesian Grand Prix in March, the Thai rider made history by becoming the first Thai rider to win in any class of Grand Prix racing. Then, he placed second at the Grand Prix of Argentina for his second consecutive podium finish. The next race is the Italian Grand Prix on May 29. The Chon Buri native, who is ranked seventh in the world championship standings, has stated that he hopes to earn at least two more victories this season, especially in the home race at Buri Ram in October. Somkiat also announced his intention to possibly compete in the MotoGP elite class in the near future. 10. On playing the lottery, large melons, turbulence and trepidation in the “close season” OPINION | by Rooster Rooster must have translated dozens of stories from the Thai press this year along on the subject of mysterious circumstances inspiring lottery wins. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1260296-on-playing-the-lottery-large-melons-turbulence-and-trepidation-in-the-“close-season”/
  11. OPINION | by Rooster Rooster must have translated dozens of stories from the Thai press this year along on the subject of mysterious circumstances inspiring lottery wins. It’s all superstitious claptrap, of course……or is it??!! Thais seem to find lottery wins in weirdly shaped banana trees and pineapple plants (recent stories) not to mention when snakes or water monitors invade homes. House numbers and registration plates are used when drivers have the proverbial miracle escapes. I’ve never played the lottery in 40 years of living in Thailand but now could be the time to start. This week I was engrossed in the follow up to the story about the woman in Samut Sakhon who mistakenly transferred nearly 300K to a woman called Saowanee who paid back 160K and spent the rest before she was found in hiding. Enter Mrs Rooster in a right kerfuffle as I sat at my keyboard pondering a Thai word I didn’t know. “Guess what?” she said, clearly stressed. Someone from the village who owed her money had transferred 2,000 baht but pressed the wrong digit. It had gone elsewhere and the bank staff were being less than helpful. In this case the error was quite understandable. On the bank app the name had appeared in English only when confirmation was required of the transfer. Though the surname was different the first name was almost identical, another coincidence. The sender couldn’t read English well and had made a not unreasonable assumption. Mrs R said, why wasn’t the name in Thai….this is Thailand. Fair point. The case reported by ASEAN NOW involved a trader who thought she was transferring 293,000 for pork products. She is leaving the matter in the hands of the police. It caused much comment online about keeping money that is not yours. It was a lively week on the forum. Top crime story was the attack on a Russian woman out jogging near a reservoir in Pattaya. The assailant tried to claim stress but it was clearly attempted rape. The poor jogger was brutally assaulted and still can’t give evidence. Well done to the Nong Prue and Pattaya tourist police for a speedy conclusion to the manhunt. Yes, CCTV helped crack it but the force are to be commended on occasion and this is one of them. “Ek Bang Lamung” as the Thai press called him, deserves a very long time in jail. The police are right that he is a danger to society. Voting takes place this Sunday in Bangkok and Pattaya in local and gubernatorial elections. That means no booze. Do the authorities think we’ll choose the wrong person if we’ve had a drink? Not that Rooster is allowed to vote of course, I’m just a humble resident. Years ago I announced at my school that I intended to become a Thai citizen and stand for parliament in Don Muang. I was going to run on a platform to resolve the carnage on the roads. Colleagues didn’t doubt my spirit of public service but reckoned nobody gives a monkeys about road death. They are mostly motorcyclists upcountry, you see. Keep up to date with all things Thailand - Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe “What about on an anti-corruption drive? That’ll get votes I insisted”. “Yeh, right”, they pooh-poohed. My political career was over before it began, now I’m just known as the Ranter from Ratchayothin…. Most sickening picture of the week - myriad corpses excepted - was tourism minister Pipat sucking up to the Saudis in Riyadh. I wish he’d wear a burqa on such trips - that face I could do without. More pleasing pictures were of Thai ladies in a state of undress selling durian by the roadside. (Durian is the flavor of the month - April was mango). One lady appeared to have two melons tightly constrained on her chest. She had hit on the idea of Durian Bua Loi (a Thai sweet dish) while another "mother of three" just cut up the King of Fruits in a colorful bra. They were both making money hand over fist providing Rooster with ample ammunition for puns that would have made Viz’s Finbarr Saunders and his Double Entendres wince! “Double” click on the stories at the double, why don’t you! In Phuket a young tourist fell off his balcony. Viagra was found in his room as if this had any bearing on the matter. Thai Enquirer would be better off investigating how high the balconies are. Thai kids went back to school this week. In the NE one father went to a government pawn shop with a washing machine hoping to get money for his son’s education. But he was obliged to take it home because it didn’t work! (The washing machine, not the government). My kids were both back at school for the first time in what seemed like years. Then they had to have a day off for their second Pfizer jabs. Then the BMA said all schools would be closed next Monday for cleaning as some had been used as polling stations. Please let me know when my children can attend school one day after another in the manner I was familiar with in England. And also let me know when you care a jot about my nippers' education that I have paid through the nose for. Thanx. At Suwannaphum airport a passenger claimed he was due compensation after suffering turbulence in a flight from Nakhon Sri Thammarat. He was stretchered away complaining of pain “from his lower back to his coccyx”. Oooh, you are awful vicar! Finally, tomorrow marks the end of the English Premier League season, a time when people like Rooster wonder what we are going to do with ourselves in the close season. And a time when Mrs Rooster thinks she can regain control of the remote for the soaps. We’ll see about that. I’d been in touch with an old Rangers fan who had to go through the misery of his team's penalty shootout defeat in the Europa League final. He paraphrased Robert Burns saying: “Football leaves nought but grief and pain for promised joy”. At least we get a few months off the agony. 13. By Editor Thai AirAsia X is preparing to enter business rehabilitation after the Thai Court has accepted its bankruptcy filing on Wednesday, May 18th, though it stresses its operations will not be affected throughout the process. Airline CEO Patima Jeerapaet revealed the rehabilitation plan aimed to effectively and sustainably proceed with debt management and restructuring after the business had been severely affected by the Covid-19 situation. He also stressed that the process would not affect the service to passengers in any way and they could use the service as usual. Moreover, Thai AirAsia X also planned to operate its flights to South Korea and Japan from June onwards. Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe Jeerapaet stated: “The fact that Thai AirAsia X entered a business rehabilitation plan during this time was the right and best timing because it was in line with the recovering tourism situation and various governments and countries reopening plans.” “The business rehabilitation would not affect passenger service as well as the planned flight routes. Passengers who had reserved seats or were hesitant whether to fly with us or not could join our flights to South Korea and Japan in June 2022. Thai AirAsia X still had plans to expand its growth, including adding new frequencies and routes in the future.” Jeerapaet concluded.
