BREAKING Thai Covid-19 Situation Center agrees to restore nationwide green zones, cancel Thailand Pass, eases mask mandate, and more By Tanakorn Panyadee National/Bangkok — The Center for Covid-19 Situation (CCSA) has reportedly given the green light to restore nationwide green zones, cancel Thailand Pass, ease the mask mandate in open areas, and extend legal closing hours for nightlife outlets to 2 AM. 2. By Tanakorn Panyadee National/Bangkok — The Center for Covid-19 Situation (CCSA) has reportedly given the green light to restore nationwide green zones, cancel Thailand Pass, ease the mask mandate in open areas, and extend legal closing hours for nightlife outlets to 2 AM. Essentially, today’s measures bring to an end over two years of Covid-19 restrictions and rules, except for the emergency decree and some masking recommendations. A source at the regular CCSA meeting today, June 17th, 2022, led by the director PM Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha reports that the CCSA has consented to reclassify the entire nation’s color-zoning into what they call green zones (surveillance). All Pilot Tourist Areas will be lifted as well. These changes will go into effect as soon as the official legal order in the Royal Gazette is released, and is expected to legally take effect on July 1st, 2022. Moreover, the CCSA has also decided to move the legal closing hours for nightlife outlets from midnight to pre-pandemic hours or around 2 AM though the mask mandate is still “recommended” in crowded spaces but is relaxed in open/outdoor spaces. However, an exact date for easing of the mask mandate has NOT been announced and is NOT set in stone as July 1st, notes the CCSA, and will depend on the upcoming Royal Gazette order. 3. Late PM Samak’s family ordered to pay ฿587m baht compensation to BMA The Supreme Administrative Court has upheld the ruling of a lower court, ordering the immediate family of the late Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, his widow Khunying Surat and their two daughters, to pay the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) 587 million baht in compensation, plus interest, over a scandalous overpriced fire truck and fire-fighting boat deal with an Austrian company in 2004. 4. The Supreme Administrative Court has upheld the ruling of a lower court, ordering the immediate family of the late Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, his widow Khunying Surat and their two daughters, to pay the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) 587 million baht in compensation, plus interest, over a scandalous overpriced fire truck and fire-fighting boat deal with an Austrian company in 2004. The court reasoned that Samak, then Bangkok governor, did not examine the deal carefully and approved it, and should therefore also be held accountable for the damage caused and pay compensation to the BMA. The court decided that, as beneficiaries of Samak’s estate, his widow and both daughters, Kanchanakorn Chaiyalap and Kandapa Mungthin, should be have to pay, as ordered by a lower court. 11. Picture: 77kaoded Thai students showed their imagination yesterday at a ceremony to celebrate Teachers' Day at Rayong Technical College in Muang district Rayong, eastern Thailand. Teacher's day is held on a Thursday each year in educational establishments and schools throughout Thailand so that students can show their respects to teachers. Songs are sung and students prostrate themselves in front of their "Khun Khru" in a gesture known as "graap". Picture: 77kaoded Part of the ceremonies are always the presentation of flowers and other items in baskets and on phan's (ceremonial trays). At the college one student had a noisy exhaust in their gold plated basket. Picture: 77kaoded This was to assure their teacher that they had learned their lesson and would NOT be riding a noisy motorbike to class. Another presented flowers on an engine - this denoted their intention to study as hard as the weight of the engine, reported 77kaoded. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-06-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 13. Naew Na Caption: Woman goes to the police to say she was attacked by man who smoked marijuana and took TRAMADOL Some Thai media is trying its best to scare the public by associating anything with the smoking of marijuana, notes ASEAN NOW. Chief of these is Naew Na whose sensationalist approach to news bears little resemblance to the truth and should be treated with caution. Their reporters hot footed it to Muang district police station in Phitsanulok in the north of the country after a post by a woman's younger brother on a "Wanna Be Famous" site that recounted how she was attacked by a man his sister had invited to her place for a beer after they met on social media. The young man apparently smoked a joint and took tramadol with the beer. Tramadol is a powerful pain killer that can be bought over the counter though it is often restricted. It is abused in fizzy drinks by the nation's youth. Som, 25, explained to the police how she was attacked at her place then again in a vehicle that the suspect crashed when they went to get more beer. She eventually managed to get free from him and use her phone and scream for help on a balcony reported Naew Na. Picture: Naew Na She said that the initial reason that the man got angry was because she mentioned her ex boyfriend who took tramadol. This set him off, she claimed though she didn't know why. At one point he forced her onto a bed and put his hand round her mouth, she alleged. She suffered injuries to her forehead, cheek and neck and believed the man - apparently a prominent YouTuber in the area - had had some kind of panic attack. Naew Na didn't mention beer in the caption of their photo or headline - it was just "ganja and tramadol". Later the man was arrested and charged with assault though other charges may follow. He was bailed out yesterday afternoon by relatives. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-06-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 15. file photo It is now possible to cultivate and have marijuana in your possession - but the country still has some of the world's toughest drug laws. This is what tourists should know before visiting the country. By Dave Owen Tourists visiting Thailand have had to be extremely careful not to fall foul of its rules on cannabis and other drugs. Possession of even small quantities of marijuana can result in long prison sentences, with many Britons among those sent to jail. Things are now changing, with the country's authorities deciding to legalise the cultivation and possession of the recreational drug, which also has medical uses. Visitors from the UK, however, are being reminded that Thailand still has some of the toughest drug laws in the world. A total of 184,416 Brits travelled to Thailand in 2019 before the coronavirus pandemic struck, according to the Visit Britain tourism website. They contributed a massive £278.87million towards the country's economy, which has experienced a tourism boom in recent decades. The country's public health minister has declared they would be handing out one million marijuana seedlings earlier this month. The drug has also gone on sale at cafés in the capital Bangkok. However, Thai authorities have warned visitors that Thailand will not be turning into a weed wonderland. Picture: Sanook The old movie "Reefer Madness" has been blamed for setting back the whole issue of marijuana usage for generations but Thailand is now in the grip of a different kind of loony behavior. "Ganja Fever" A mad scramble for marijuana plants that Thai media Sanook said was part of "Ganja Fever" - a term they used via English to describe what was going on in Thailand since legalization just a week ago. In the latest incident a 50 something man lost his temper at a queue to buy plants produced by Mae Jo university in Sansai, Chiang Mai in the north of the country. Picture: Sanook The man had arrived too late to be part of the queue system and lost his temper after an exchange of bad words with officials. A fist fight erupted over the plants. Just 80 queue tickets are being issued a day limiting customers to 5 plants each. Picture: Sanook The man was told to come back earlier another day when 400 more would be available. ASEAN NOW suggests that the man should chill and be more "jai yen yen" - perhaps by visiting one of the many "dispensaries" now sprouting up all over Thailand, if he can afford their prices! -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-06-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 22. Picture: Siam Rath Top brass in the form of poster boy Thai cop Lt-Gen Surachate Hakpan went to Huai Khwang police station yesterday with his entourage to celebrate the fact that the downtown Bangkok police station had been named #1 in the met police. This is apparently for following the Royal Thai Police commander Gen Suwat Chaengyodsuk's master plan for community policing to the letter. This is the much vaunted "Smart Safety Zone 4.0" - a scheme that involves CCTV and buttons the public can press to report crime, even at night. Surachate - known universally by the moniker of Big Joke - was pictured giving station chief Pol Col Yingyot Suwanno his hearty congratulations for taking part so successfully in the pilot. Surachate said that the community policing initiative was so marvellous that the Thai police have been recognised internationally for it. Picture: Siam Rath ASEAN NOW believes he was referring to a recent police get together in Dubai where awards were handed out. Smart Safety Zone 4.0 is RTP chief Suwat's prime initiative and Big Joke leads the committee for its implementation and review along with other top brass. Siam Rath reported on the back slapping at Huai Khwang yesterday though unfortunately the station chief's face was hidden by his salute as well as his mask. Or was he just hiding his light under his bushel.... -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-06-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 24. Daily News Thai Caption: Arrest my own son A 71 year old father has gone to the Thai police after his youngest son stole valuables worth 12 million baht from his safe, it is alleged. He said he never thought he'd see the day when his own flesh and blood would do such a thing. Ekachai, now 72 in the body of the Daily News story, went to the Ayutthaya police with his eldest boy Pongpinit, 41, to meet the chief Pol Col Prawes Srinakh. He gave details about the theft that involved 12 guns, 200 baht weight in gold jewelry, nine Rolex watches, three Omega watches, land title deeds and a will all valued at 12 million baht. He'd kept all that in a safe on the second floor of a house in Phailing sub-district. It went missing on the 10th of June and investigators had already found no evidence that the safe had been forced. Picture: Daily News Pongpinit said his dad lived there alone. He and his younger brother live in Bangkok. In April his father had fallen down in an apparent accident and he had taken him to hospital. He was later transferred to a hopsital in Thonburi for a month. When he was allowed home he found the locks changed at the house and the keys to the safe missing. When the old man had recovered he remembered that Pongpiphat, his youngest had attacked him and was "looking after" the house. Picture: Daily News Ekachai said that he couldn't believe his own son would do this and steal from him and wanted him found and prosecuted. Meanwhile police had spoken to the youngest son who said he'd put the valuables elsewhere for safe keeping, not stolen them and did not attack his father. The valuables still belonged to his dad. Only a part of the haul has been found in the Bangkok residence of Pornpiphat who is now in custody. Police said it was a delicate family matter and they were trying to get to the bottom of it. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-06-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
