  3. BANGKOK, Aug 16 (TNA) – The internal trade chief said he was aware that instant noodle manufacturers were facing higher production costs but he had to reject their request to raise the product price to eight baht per pack. Wattanasak Sueaiam, director-general of the Department of Internal Trade, said he acknowledged the press conference in which the five instant noodle manufacturers jointly sought permission to increase their product price from six baht to eight baht per pack due to rising production costs. 5. Daily News Thai Caption: You can see the numbers plain as day Daily News reporters raced to Chaiyaphum in the north east where locals are convinced they saw numbers in the bark of a tree that could be the answer to today's lottery draw. They went to a house in ban Kulalom in Muang district where there was a "Khaena" tree. Owner Prasan said that a while back he had had a dream in which the spirits of the land had advised him that if he wanted his family to get rich he should dig at the base of the tree. Lo and behold 70-80 cms below the surface he found an image of Buddha on a stone slab that he reckons is more than 100 years old. Picture: Daily News Now locals were busy praying to the tree and lighting joss-sticks convinced they will benefit too by divining numbers from the bark. Some people thought the numbers were 08 while others reckoned 72. A lady called Khamra, 52, was sure that the spirits were right after Prasan's dream. She saw 08. The draw for the state lottery, drawn every two weeks, takes place this afternoon. Many Thais bet on two numbers to increase their chance of winning by buying government tickets or betting on underground markets. 11. 77kaoded Thai Caption: Strict! In the Khao San area 77kaoded reported with a video on BMA officials ensuring that the law was being followed in relation to fire safety at Khao San Road clubs. And bars and dispensaries offering the sale of marijuana were also visited. This after the devastating Mountain B fire earlier this month that killed many people and the legalization of weed in June. A female deputy governor went with her staff and the police to ensure safety at clubs again checking exits were not locked. If things were not perfect she advised how to achieve this. The visit was mounted yesterday evening by Dr Thawida Kamolwech and local officials. Chana Songkhram police chief Pol Col Sanong Saengmanee tagged along. Several media referred to "strictness". The trip included visits to a street stall selling Jack Daniels and ganja and a more salubrious dispensary purveying such items in jars as "Gelato Runts" and "Gorilla Glue". Picture: 77kaoded Dr Thawida told the media she was concerned for the safety of people going out in the area regarding entry and exit points to clubs. She was also checking licences were in place. Mountain B and many others in Thailand didn't bother with that. Picture: 77kaoded She was also concerned with cleanliness and order and was following up on previous visits to make sure that clubs and businesses were putting their act together. One wasn't and a further 11 were ordered closed temporarily to make changes. Despite economic hardship she stressed the need for businesses to be following the law and inspiring confidence to customers - especially foreigners of which there were many. Picture: 77kaoded Their safety in a place unfamiliar to them was paramount, she said. She said that clubs in the area were claustrophobic and exit routes outside were important. Exits from clubs needed to be multiple, not just one. Also on her radar were noise abatement measures and overcrowding. Sasithorn Prasitporn-udom of the Phra Nakhon authority stressed the need for the measures to be lasting: "We can't have two exits this week then next week back to one," she cautioned promising further checks. ASEAN NOW notes that much criticism has been leveled at the Thai authorities for laxity in following up crackdowns in the past. Neither this report or a similar one by Daily News commented about the officials' checks on marijuana selling shops in the area. It was all about club safety. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-16 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 16. by Joseph O' Connor Electoral reform bill that was passed by parliament on Monday due to continued failure to make a quorum, is very likely to be reviewed by the Constitutional Court. If it is struck down, it could leave Thailand facing a constitutional crisis or holding the next General Election under the 2019 provisions and regulations. Parliament, on Monday, failed to reach a quorum on a bill governing the next election and the selection of House of Representative MPs. The bill was considered finalised by the President of the Assembly Chuan Leekpai under its originally drafted terms which were to be sent to the Prime Minister’s Office. It will then be sent to the Election Commission for review. The law, however, is almost certainly going to be challenged before the Constitutional Court before the end of this month, a situation that could either result in a political vacuum and crisis or a reversion to the former one ballot voting and electoral process used in the March 2019 General Election. The Thai parliament, on Monday, made a last-ditch effort to pass an amendment to section 24(1) of a new electoral bill for members of the House of Representatives which was passed in July and would have adjusted the formula for selecting MPs for party list seats in the next House of Representatives. 18. Daily News Thai Caption: Packed carousels at Suvarnabhumi Daily News picked up on a Facebook post yesterday evening from a site called "Travel 360 - Thiaw Rorp Thit" that reported crowds at the carousels at Suvarnabhumi airport. The media said that this made the Thai and foreign tourists "seng" - bored - in their headline. So why the 'hundreds of people' waiting? The airport authorities reportedly said there were a lot of flights and rain in the airport area meant slow delivery of bags. A handful of posters on the site suggested things were normally fine. Wipar Nong said that the site shouldn't give tourists an opportunity to moan. Toon Koi said the wait wasn't long. Huak Khiattapat said "Amen....normally it's good" and many more tourists were returning to Thailand after the pandemic. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-16 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 22. By Pitchayapa Phiwpong Thailand’s hospital providers have seen their earnings for the 2nd quarter 2022 surge and was the only sectors after petrochemical that saw their profitability rise by such high numbers. Hospital providers, which benefitted from the surge in Covid-19 cases and the hospitalization of patients either in hospitals or in the so called ‘hospitel’ (a hotel turned into hospital kind of arrangement), are also starting to see some return of ‘medical tourism’ as the country starts to open up its borders. “We expect our covered hospital stocks to report a 5.6 billion Baht aggregate profit in Q2 2022, down 30.5% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) but up 61.9% year-on-year (YoY),” Attaphol Tisayukata, analyst at TISCO Securities said in a note recently and he was absolutely correct in his assessment of a surge in profits as most hospitals that have come out to announce their results have all shown significant improvement. 24. Analysis | by Ken Mathis Lohatepanont “A man’s worth,” the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius once said, “is no greater than his ambitions.” If this is true both for people and parties, then the Bhumjai Thai party’s value is high indeed. Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Bhumjai Thai’s leader, recently made clear his grand ambitions for the party at a rally in Lopburi province. The party cannot refuse to lead the next government, Anutin declared, if they were to win 200 seats at the next general election due next year. At the very least, Anutin noted, the party was looking to double the number of ministries the party controls from three to six. As for himself? “Shower us with a lot of votes. Don’t be shy,” Anutin exhorted, “I’ll be the prime minister if I must.” A touch of reluctance, perhaps, but make no mistake: this is an ambitious party that knows its electoral worth. The question that remains is: is the party broadly correct in its aims, or is it overestimating its own appeal to voters?
