  6. File photo for reference only A story coming from the north east of Thailand brings into the question the subject of honesty among not just Thai people but anyone who has a bank account. It involves the transfer of nearly 300,000 baht to the wrong bank account. The woman who received the money has paid back 160K but disappeared with the rest. Now the police are issuing a summons. The case started on April 28th when frozen seafood and pork meat for buffets' trader Wirawan Chuatpong, 40, filed a report with the police in Samut Sakhon. She said she had trasferred 293,439 baht to the wrong account on an app. She had intended to pay a pork trader but got the number wrong by one digit and wound up paying a woman called Saowanee in Samed sub-district of Buriram, NE Thailand. She had contacted the lady and received 160,000 baht back - but when asked about the remaining 133,439 baht she said she'd already spent it. The police in Samut Sakhon issued a summons. Siam Rath reporters went to the house in the village of Nong Kha and found it deserted and locked up yesterday. Keep up to date with all things Thailand - Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe Picture: Siam Rath They spoke to a neighbor who said they hadn't seen Saowanee or her husband for two days. She was feeding their three cats who had been abandoned. The village elder or phu yai baan, a man called Teenoi Waram, said that he was aware that the person who had lost the money had been in touch. Two weeks ago he said that the woman arrived but Saowanee was not home. But he said they had been in touch over the phone and some of the money had been repaid. Then on Monday police arrived but only the husband was home. Asked as to the whereabouts of his wife he said he had no idea. The police asked him to tell her to come into the station on her return. As far as he was aware no summons had yet been served on Saowanee. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-05-18 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 10. Daily News Thai Caption: I'd like to pawn this Daily News went to a government pawn shop run by the municipality in Sisaket in Thailand's north east. Yesterday was the start of term and the facility had arranged for 120 million baht in funds to be available as they were expecting many parents desperate for cash. They were not disappointed. Large numbers of parents turned up to pawn jewelry and electrical appliances in particular. Manager Sawat Thaomai took the press to see a storeroom where the pawned items are categorized and kept after they have been examined and deemed suitable for pawning. Keep up to date with all things Thailand - Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe Picture: Daily News He said 80% of pawned items were gold jewelry like necklaces. The facility has a promotion for May and June offering monthly interest rates as low as .25% on small deals and 1% on items over 5,000 baht in value. But one father named only as "A" was to be disappointed. He needed some money to pay for his son's university education in Ubon Ratchathani and hoped to get 2,500 baht for a washing machine. But on inspection it was found to be faulty so he had to take it back and find some other way to raise the money. Many Thais pawn items at the start of term making the country something of a Pawn Hub, notes ASEAN NOW. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-05-18 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 15. 16. By Thai Enquirer Thai and international media have been abuzz with articles about soft power following the performance of Milli, a talented Thai rapper, at the famous Coachella festival in California. During the performance, Milli played with stereotypes, such as claiming that she does not ride elephants back home, and concluded with a tribute to a favorite local dessert, mango sticky rice, another widely appreciated stunt. Beyond cultural references, the artist has never hidden her negative opinion toward the current government, which once even got her into trouble, and she did not miss the chance to share her views on the international stage either. Speaking of Thailand, she uttered: “the country is good, people are good, our food is good but the government is bood,” implying disapproval. Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe If soft power is understood as the power of attraction, it is not hard to understand why Milli can be a remarkable source, both within Thailand and beyond the country’s borders. She is young, successful, outspoken, and somehow relatable to the dreams and concerns of younger generations united by music and fandom. Yet soft power “is not [only] built upon sweet music,” a Thai columnist wrote. And that is certainly true. 20. File photo By Thai Newsroom Reporters FORMER PREMIER ABHISIT Vejjajiva has joined ranks with pro-democracy groups in repeating calls for an end to the role of all unelected senators in voting for head of a post-election government. Delivering a speech via a zoom conferencing system to Thammasat University’s Faculty of Law, the former premier advised today (May 17) that the 250 senators, handpicked by the military junta who had staged the 2014 coup, be entirely kept out of the legislative process for the picking of a prime minister following a general election for MPs as far as democratic rule is concerned. For that reason, Abhisit who has earlier resigned as leader of Democrat Party and as legislator in protest of the successful naming of coup leader Prayut Chan-o-cha as head of the Palang Pracharath-led coalition government in 2019, suggested that the constitution’s Section 272 be amended to the extent that such a decisive, yet undemocratic role of the unelected senators be no longer permitted.
