United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), or “Red Shirt” leader Jatuporn Prompan led a small group of Thai people who staged a rally in front of the Ministry of Defence yesterday (Monday), to protest the visit to Thailand by US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and his country’s Indo-Pacific strategy. Austin paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, also Thailand’s defence minister, at the Ministry of Defence at 3pm yesterday. In his address to the media, the red-shirt movement leader said Austin’s visit amounts to an attempt to drag Thailand into the US conflicts with China, based on the principle that enemies of the US are also enemies of Thailand, despite the fact that Thailand is not an enemy of any country, as he urged Thailand to reject the US Indo-Pacific strategy. Picture: Thai Rath Police and navy divers were called after a woman learning to free dive 8 nautical miles off Sattahip was dragged under water by a rope attached to a 10 kilogram weight that snapped dragging her underwater. The accident happened during a sudden riptide according to one of the instructors present in the area near Koh Juang, Samae San. Naval Special warfare Command divers and rescue services found Hataya Rimphanawet, 35, under the sea with her right hand entangled in 10-15 meters of red rope that had been attached to the metal weight. Thararat, 34, an instructor said that at 11 am yesterday a group of students were being taught to free dive without aids in 20 meters of water. A sudden powerful riptide hit the area detaching the support boat's anchor from its rope. The boat flowed away on the riptide and everyone was ordered out of the water or to hold onto a buoy, reported Thai Rath. But the victim got entangled in a rope and as instructors tried to free her the rope snapped and she was dragged under water by the weight. They tried to find and help her but she had been dragged away under the water. Rescue was called at noon and the body was found at 5.15 pm. The body was taken to the Police Hospital in Bangkok for autopsy as local police began their investigation. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-06-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Photo from Thammanat Prompow Facebook Thammanat Prompow has become a party leader for the first time in his career — a crowning success for any politician. However, analysts say his recent rise to head the Thai Economic Party is unlikely to benefit this powerbroker, who is more used to working underground than under the limelight. For them, Thammanat’s latest career move has only a slim chance of impacting Thai politics ahead of the upcoming censure debate against the government. The no-confidence debate, expected to take place next month, will target Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and nine other key Cabinet members, according to the opposition. This will be the last such debate during this Parliament, which completes its four-year term in March next year. Thammanat, previously the ruling Palang Pracharath Party’s secretary-general, has been at odds with Prayut ever since he was ousted from the Cabinet after allegedly engineering a plot to topple the PM at the previous censure debate last September. Managing the controversial Skytrain Green Line shrewdly, bogged down as it is by controversies over high fares, court battle over debt and extension of concession, is going to be a major test for newly elected Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt. The high fares of mass transit services in Bangkok have been largely blamed for lower and lower-middle-income groups having only limited access to the facilities. Not only consumers, but even academics have for long complained about the fares. Before the 2019 general election, politicians had promised lower fares and better services, but so far, the coalition government led by PM General Prayut Chan-o-cha has not delivered on its promise.
