by Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - The U.S.-Thai Cobra Gold military exercise, which was scaled back this year due to the pandemic, is set for a full-scale revival in 2023. During a press conference, Thai Defense Ministry Spokesperson Gen Kongcheep Tantravanich did not provide specifics concerning next year’s exercises, stating only that Thailand and the United States agreed to host a full-scale exercise that would include cyber warfare training. Cobra Gold is among the longest-running international exercises in the world, as well as one of the largest multinational military exercises held in Southeast Asia. Gen Kongcheep said a recent meeting between visiting U.S. Defense Secretary Gen Lloyd Austin and Thai Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha resolved to strengthen bilateral cooperation and support global humanitarian campaigns. Gen Austin reportedly told Gen Prayut that the United States will continue to support Thailand’s future military campaigns, particularly those involving personnel training and defense industry development. The two officials also reaffirmed the U.S.–Thai Defense Alliance’s Joint Vision Statement for 2020, a treaty alliance that aims to promote stability, prosperity and sustainability in the Indo-Pacific region in support of an inclusive and rules-based international order. Previously, Admiral John Aquilino, commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, was in Thailand to participate in the inaugural 2022 U.S.-Thailand Senior Leader Dialogue (SLD) from June 5-9. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-06-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. by Paul Rujopakarn BANGKOK (NNT) - After assuming the chairmanship of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) this year, Thailand has pledged to make the grouping more tangible than ever. The remarks were made by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai on Monday (13 June) at an exhibition commemorating the 25th anniversary of the regional organization at the Iconsiam shopping center in Bangkok. BIMSTEC member economies, which include Southeast and South Asian countries, are home to one of the world’s largest populations, which currently number more than 1.4 billion people. As BIMSTEC chair for 2022-2023, Don said a number of initiatives have been established for Thailand to demonstrate its leadership potential in promoting and supporting development growth, as well as cooperation among member economies and between the group and the rest of the world. Don affirmed that Thailand is also prepared to play a leading role in campaigns for regional prosperity, resilience and transparency, particularly those involving the BIMSTEC Master Plan for Transport Connectivity, land links between India, Myanmar and Thailand, and - most importantly - the Bio-Circular-Green Economy Model. BIMSTEC is one of the largest regional cooperation frameworks in the world in terms of population, combined economic size and growth potential. The group comprises Thailand, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Sri Lanka. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-06-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Chakkaphan Phewngam Deputy Bangkok Governor Chakkaphan Phewngam has warned municipal police to refrain from demanding or accepting bribes or other ill-gotten benefits during his first meeting with municipal police chiefs and the head of the City Law Enforcement Department yesterday (Monday). He said that, from now on, allegations of bribery made against officials of the City Law Enforcement Department or municipal police will not be handled solely by the district office concerned. They will be sent to a committee, comprising the head of the City Law Enforcement Department and the inspector-general of the city administration, for investigation. The deputy governor disclosed that he has already received a number of complaints about the extortion of bribes by municipal police on his first day in office and he feels uncomfortable about the problem and would like all officers to perform their duty straightforwardly and transparently. United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), or “Red Shirt” leader Jatuporn Prompan led a small group of Thai people who staged a rally in front of the Ministry of Defence yesterday (Monday), to protest the visit to Thailand by US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and his country’s Indo-Pacific strategy. Austin paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, also Thailand’s defence minister, at the Ministry of Defence at 3pm yesterday. In his address to the media, the red-shirt movement leader said Austin’s visit amounts to an attempt to drag Thailand into the US conflicts with China, based on the principle that enemies of the US are also enemies of Thailand, despite the fact that Thailand is not an enemy of any country, as he urged Thailand to reject the US Indo-Pacific strategy. The accident happened during a sudden riptide according to one of the instructors present in the area near Koh Juang, Samae San. Naval Special warfare Command divers and rescue services found Hataya Rimphanawet, 35, under the sea with her right hand entangled in 10-15 meters of red rope that had been attached to the metal weight.
