  2. A Bangkok woman who regularly fed pigeons unknowingly inhaled fungal spores, leading to a lung infection and requiring surgery to remove a mass. Despite having no symptoms, she was diagnosed with cryptococcal pneumonia, which had formed a cavity in her lung. Manoon Leechawengwong, a respiratory disease specialist, shared the case on Facebook, detailing the woman’s condition. At 52 years old, she lived in Bangkok and was generally healthy, with no history of smoking or chronic illness. She had no symptoms like cough, fever, loss of appetite, weight loss, or headaches. During a routine annual check-up on May 12, an X-ray revealed a new small mass in the upper lobe of her right lung. A previous X-ray from the year before was normal. A CT scan showed the mass measured 0.9 by 0.9 by 1.7 centimetres, with a cavity inside. Blood tests confirmed she did not have HIV. Suspecting lung cancer, doctors performed surgery to remove the mass on May 22 at a nearby hospital. The pathology report identified the mass as cryptococcal pneumonia, caused by the fungus Cryptococcus Neoformans. Four days post-surgery, a blood test for cryptococcal antigen came back positive with a titer of 1:8. The patient began treatment with the antifungal medication fluconazole. Seeking further advice, she consulted with her doctors on the next steps. Further questioning revealed that the woman lived in an area with many pigeons and frequently fed them. She had inhaled spores from pigeon droppings, leading to the fungal infection in her lung. Fortunately, her strong immune system prevented the infection from spreading beyond her lungs. The treatment plan includes taking oral fluconazole for approximately six months. She was advised to avoid feeding pigeons and to stay away from areas where they congregate, reported Sanook. Manoon emphasised the importance of awareness regarding the health risks associated with feeding pigeons, particularly the potential for inhaling harmful fungal spores. by Bob Scott Picture courtesy of Today's Homeowner Source: The Thaiger 2024-06-04 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe
  3. Dilapidated building in Bangkok listed for 18 million baht by Bob Scott Picture courtesy of Sanook A four-storey dilapidated building in Bangkok has been listed for sale at 18 million baht, causing quite a stir online. 4. A four-storey dilapidated building in Bangkok has been listed for sale at 18 million baht, causing quite a stir online. Netizens are engaged in lively debates about whether this “fixer-upper” is worth the “price tag shock.” Aood Narongrit, a Facebook user, shared images and details in the group Second-Hand Houses at Good Prices in Bangkok and Surrounding Areas. The post showcases this diamond in the rough, featuring 14 square 56 square metres, eighth bedrooms, and eighth en-suite bathrooms. Located in Ladprao Soi 1, just 300 metres from Union Mall and directly opposite Central Ladprao, this property boasts a prime location despite its shabby chic condition. The asking price is set at 18 million baht but it is negotiable. The post also notes that the building is open for sale or lease with renovation contracts available, inviting offers for consideration. The post quickly garnered attention, with numerous individuals commenting and exchanging views on the price. Some people deemed the price excessively high, while others considered it reasonable due to the prime location. The proximity to significant shopping centres such as Union Mall and Central Ladprao makes it a highly desirable spot. “If the budget allows, this place could be renovated into a chic bar, café, or hostel.” Limited parking There are limitations for business use, such as the lack of parking space, which would require targeting customers who are backpackers or those using the BTS Skytrain. Others pointed out the legal restrictions, noting that if the building were to be demolished and rebuilt, the setback requirements would reduce the usable space. Additionally, the structural integrity of the building would need to be assessed to determine the feasibility of renovations. The mixed reactions highlight the debate over real estate prices in prime areas of Bangkok. While some view the investment as justified due to location, others are wary of the additional costs that would be required for renovation or reconstruction. The discussion also touched on the potential for different types of businesses. Some commenters suggested that despite the lack of parking, the location’s high foot traffic could be advantageous for certain types of enterprises, especially those aimed at younger, more mobile demographics. “This area is always bustling with people, especially those who prefer walking or using public transport. It could be a goldmine for the right kind of business.” The post has sparked a broader dialogue about the value of properties in central Bangkok, particularly those with significant potential for redevelopment. The high price tag, while initially shocking to some, is seen as a reflection of the strategic location and the opportunities it presents. by Bob Scott Picture courtesy of Sanook Source: The Thaiger 2024-06-04 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe
  5. Thailand eggs on dino-mite park proposal for roaring revenue by Bob Scott Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) proposed hatching a dinosaur-themed park in Khon Kaen to give tourism a Jurassic boost and bone-rattling revenue for the northeastern region. 6. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) proposed hatching a dinosaur-themed park in Khon Kaen to give tourism a Jurassic boost and bone-rattling revenue for the northeastern region. Seksan Sripraiwa, director of the Khon Kaen TAT office, urged the government to team up with the private sector to make this dino-mite project a reality, citing the region’s geological significance, including the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Footprint in Khon Kaen and dinosaur fossils in Kalasin. “We need to build a large theme park, as large as Disneyland, with the simulation from the Jurassic World film. Such a tourist attraction would bring lots of income to locals.” Recently, TAT partnered with international schools in Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, and Nakhon Ratchasima to initiate dinosaur-themed educational field trips for students. These activities have been successful, and efforts are underway to extend this partnership to schools in Bangkok and other provinces. Seksan suggested that the government should also focus on improving roads and public transport services to connect the airport with the dinosaur tour route, facilitating easier tourist access. In a related development, Somradee Chitchong, Deputy Governor of TAT’s domestic market, announced preparations to collaborate with Major Cineplex to create a dinosaur-themed tour route. This initiative comes in response to reports that Jurassic World 4 will be filmed in Thailand’s southern provinces of Krabi and Trang from mid-June to mid-July. “The filming of major films like Jurassic World 4 in Thailand is a good sign to significantly boost the country’s tourism industry, expecting to attract both Thai and international tourists to follow filming locations, especially among families who are dinosaur lovers.” Aman Madadam, director of the Krabi provincial TAT office, highlighted the positive impact of the film’s production on local tourism. The production is anticipated to increase hotel reservations, employment, and shopping in the province, generating an estimated 100 million baht in revenue. By focusing on these initiatives, TAT aims to create a comprehensive tourism experience that leverages Thailand’s unique geological sites and the appeal of major film productions to attract a diverse audience. It’s time to dig up some dino-mite fun and let tourism in the region roar with excitement. by Bob Scott Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post -- 2024-06-04 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe
  7. Has Thailand become the sick man of Asean? Thailand’s prolonged political crisis and poor management of the economy over the past few decades have taken a huge toll on the country’s growth. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1328918-has-thailand-become-the-sick-man-of-asean/
  8. Thailand’s prolonged political crisis and poor management of the economy over the past few decades have taken a huge toll on the country’s growth. The Thai economy grew just 1.5 per cent in the first quarter of this year after having expanded 1.7 per cent in the fourth quarter of last year and 1.9 per cent for the full year in 2023, according to state-owned think-tank National Economic and Social Development Council. The country has been bogged down by sluggish growth for decades since the 1997 financial crisis. Budget woes One of the major causes of the stagnation this year has been the time lag in disbursement of the fiscal 2024 budget due to the delay in its passing by Parliament, which led to a decline in public spending. A political deadlock after the general election in May 2023, which did not give any party a clear majority, led to a delay in the formation of a coalition government. 9. Russian commits suicide in Pattaya over sexual assault charge by Petch Petpailin Photo via Amarin TV A Russian man reportedly committed suicide by jumping from the 29th floor of a Pattaya condominium yesterday, June 3, allegedly due to stress over a sexual assault charge. 10. A Russian man reportedly committed suicide by jumping from the 29th floor of a Pattaya condominium yesterday, June 3, allegedly due to stress over a sexual assault charge. The 38 year old Russian man, Roman Vlasenko, was found lifeless outside the 35-storey condominium in the Bang Lamung district of Pattaya at around noon yesterday. Vlasenko was wearing a dark blue T-shirt and black shorts. He had a large gash on his head, exposing his brain. A security guard at the condominium reported the death to Mueang Pattaya Police Station. The guard told police that Vlasenko was a resident of the condo, living on the 21st floor. According to the guard, he saw the Russian deceased walking near the garden on the 29th floor before his death, and the foreign man appeared to be drunk. Police investigated Vlasenko’s room and found no suspicious circumstances or signs of a struggle. Officers then interviewed people who had been in contact with Vlasenko and found that he had called the owner of the flat earlier that day to ask for a delay in paying his rent. He told the owner that his credit card had been blocked. Police reported that in April Vlasenko was charged with sexually assaulting a masseuse at a local massage parlour. He was arrested and charged, and the case was closed just days before his suicide. Police suspected that Vlasenko was under stress and had decided to commit suicide. However, police would take Vlasenko’s body to Vachira Phuket Hospital for an autopsy to confirm the cause of death. Officers also planned to summon Vlasenko’s family members and relatives for questioning before closing the case. Jumping from a condominium is not an unusual occurrence in Pattaya, it happens frequently enough that locals and expats have insensitively coined the term “joining the Pattaya Flying Club” to describe the act. In a related incident, an American man fell to his death from the seventh-floor balcony of a Pattaya hotel today, June 4. Officers are now investigating the case to determine whether it was an accident or another suicide. 11. Thai Monk Nabbed Shoplifting Beer from Isaan Grocery Stores video screenshot Buddhist principles took a hit recently when a monk in Thailand’s Isaan province of Mukdahan was seen stealing beer. 12. video screenshot Buddhist principles took a hit recently when a monk in Thailand’s Isaan province of Mukdahan was seen stealing beer. On May 30, a grocery shop owner took to Facebook to share videos from her store's security cameras catching the monk in the act. The footage shows him selecting drinks from a fridge and slyly slipping a can of beer into his robe before taking another beverage to the cashier. The shop owner, identified as Oom Phakhamon, observed the suspicious behaviour and checked her security footage. It confirmed her doubts. The monk had arrived in a white SUV, raising further suspicions that he might be a fake using the monk's robe as a guise for wrongdoing. Monks in Thailand are strictly prohibited from drinking alcohol, purchasing food or beverages, and generally even driving cars. They rely on offerings from laypeople for sustenance and are seen as embodying a more ascetic lifestyle. The shop owner said that the monk seemed around 50 years old and claimed she had never seen him at any local temples before. While it was unclear if she had reported the incident to the police, she shared the story on social media to alert the community. Following this incident, another grocery store owner recognized the same monk committing theft at her store. She reviewed her security footage and confirmed he had stolen alcohol on two occasions. The shared experiences on social media have painted a worrying picture of misconduct. The acting sub-district abbot is now investigating with plans to defrock the monk for repeated theft and alcohol consumption. This incident is part of a troubling trend; earlier this year, another monk in Buriram province was arrested for drinking and attempting to intrude into nuns' quarters. In yet another case, a monk in Maha Sarakham province was found with methamphetamine and arrested after not paying for petrol and causing a vehicular accident. These cases highlight a growing concern over monk misconduct and the importance of upholding Buddhist values in the community. -- 2024-06-04 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  14. The Thai government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is vigorously working to enhance its workforce by attracting skilled foreign professionals. As of 4th June, Chaiwut Watanakun, the Prime Minister's spokesman, announced that Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has spearheaded efforts to improve Thailand's competitiveness in the global economy. This includes refining visa and work permit procedures, which have already resulted in approvals for over 56,000 skilled foreign workers in targeted industries. Chaiwut elaborated that the Board of Investment (BOI), in coordination with the Immigration Bureau and the Ministry of Labour, has consistently prioritised the facilitation of services for skilled foreign professionals, investors, and others looking to work and reside in Thailand. A significant step in this direction is the One Start One Stop Investment Center (OSOS) on the 18th floor of the Chamchuri Square building, which offers a comprehensive range of services in one location, eliminating the need to visit multiple agencies. Complementing this initiative is the SINGLE WINDOW Visa and Work Permit System, an online service designed to streamline visa and work permit processes. According to BOI data, Thailand is now home to over 56,000 foreign workers whose visas and work permits have been approved. This includes over 50,000 managers and experts involved in investment promotion projects and approximately 4,000 individuals holding Long-Term Resident Visas (LTR Visas). The majority of these skilled professionals come from the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, China, Germany, Japan, and France. Additionally, Smart Visas, which cater to specific professions and startup groups, account for around 2,170 individuals, primarily from the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Germany. This robust initiative is seen as a crucial step in maintaining and boosting Thailand's standing in the global market, making it an attractive destination for high-calibre foreign talent. 20. In a distressing turn of events out of Maha Sarakham Province, police allege that a woman orchestrated her husband's murder by hiring a hitman through an app. The alleged motive? A mere 300,000 baht. This grim plot was unravelled after suspicious family members alerted the authorities about the circumstances surrounding the husband's mysterious death. At a press briefing this morning, Deputy Commander of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, Noppasin Poolsawat, and Commander of the Metropolitan Police Investigation Division, Theeradej Thamsuthee, shed light on the case’s developments. The investigation led to the arrest of Wannipa, known as Mod, who is the wife of Phichit Kleepjinda, the owner of a local Thai massage school. Police also apprehended two accomplices, 25-year-old Saroj Sueasuwan and Weerapat Sukonthasap. A fourth suspect, 25-year-old Natthaphon Sirinonrang, remains on the run and is suspected to be near the border. Details of the crime began to surface after Phichit was shot on April 8 in Bangkok's Wang Thonglang area. The meticulous police work brought forth strong evidence prompting arrests and confessions, particularly from Saroj and Weerapat, who admitted to their roles in the sordid affair. Wannipa, alleged to be the mastermind, partially confessed, citing ongoing domestic conflicts and jealousy issues as her motive. She meticulously coordinated the murder, identifying her husband's whereabouts to the hitman. The financial details of the transactions revealed that Wannipa initially transferred 45,000 baht to Natthaphon and 33,000 baht to Saroj, culminating in around 300,000 baht for the entire operation. Evidence suggests Wannipa and her co-conspirators were determined, with contacts and planning reportedly starting in March. As the investigation continues, authorities are set to probe further into the nature of the relationships between the accomplices and any underlying financial incentives for Wannipa. The ongoing investigation also involves scrutinising if there are additional associates linked to the crime. Despite detailed confessions, the police continue to piece together the full extent of this harrowing plot. Picture courtesy: Khaosod -- 2024-06-04 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe
