  1. Mmh oysters? Love 'em! Supposed to be an aphrodisiac don't you know! The trouble is the last time I tried 'em only the first three worked!
  2. The American "political journey" ( I have heard it described as an experiment) has always relied on the fact that those driving it have always essentially believed in the fundamental principles underpinning the republic. Whilst there may have been some close calls in the past, maybe it now faces it's nemesis in the bloated, strutting, amoral, self centred figure of Donald Trump; who seems to exercise a bizarre attraction to many of its citizens.
  3. Typical British "reserve"? There again, perhaps it is you?
  4. I suppose that if you are going to 'stiff" your traditional power base you might as well go for broke! That rather applies to Pheu Thai and the Democrats!
  5. Hitler was brought up by a Catholic mother. There is no evidence that once he was out of his teens, she no longer had any influence, and she had died, that he either practiced Catholicism or received any of the Sacraments.
  6. Possibly Islam, certainly these days, is, umh, rather "self selecting" when it comes to that sort of thing.
  7. In general, perhaps not the brightest of plans!
  8. Oh dear ( yawn), another burbling stream of (semi) consciousness! Apropos of nothing in particular, my brother used to have a suede jacket and haircut just like that fellow back in the seventies. He used to talk <deleted> as well!
  9. It will be a Regent. Initially Prayut no doubt, but subsequently another General.
  10. Significant, as in more than Pheu Thai got!
  11. Pheu Thai's policies: 1) get Thaksin back 2) err, let's see what happens...
  12. If they continue until May 2024, which does seem possible, then they will use that time to put in place measures that keep them in power after that.
  13. How much patience should they need? Throughout the first twenty years of this century elected governments have been repeatedly removed, and elections denied, by these "powerful people". Two months (more) ago some 66% of the electorate emphatically rejected the rule of the " powerful people" and here we are, they are again frustrating the election.
  14. It's rather a sad reflection on a couple of things: the state of the University whereby an " influential professor" can do such a thing, and go unpunished; and the state of the police force whereby a police officer is prepared to be hired to do such a thing.
  15. They are not bothered. They own the (only two) breweries. This game presents them with just what they want. The selection of a prime minister and government resulting from the General Election they lost over two months ago postponed indefinitely, any movement in the hands of the court which they control. Laughing all the way to their ( overseas) banks!
  16. Prayut will, like Prem ( who he seeks to emulate), be a permanent broker in the Thai power game - Let's call it what it is, not pretend it is democratic politics!
  17. We will find out when 250 new (and/or reappointed) senators are revealed in their spanking new white dress uniforms in May 2024.
  18. Yes, umh, timing is everything!
  19. Gems (and rosewood and teak)!
  20. I am sure we have all seen them on long haul flights out of Bangkok, drinking all night before the flight, finishing their last beers as the flight is called...
