A 'Pint' just isn't a real Pint in Thailand.
herfiehandbag replied to bob smith's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Whilst I appreciate you are far wiser than me on these (and I am sure many other matters) perhaps I could draw on your penchant for pedantry and point out, as have several others, that I was suggesting that in this context "pint" was used as a colloquial description of a glass of beer rather than as a specific measure. -

You joke! But last week three Indian blokes wandered into a bar I frequent, ordered two large bottles of beer. Two of them drank from glasses, the third from the bottle. They attempted (quite loudly as it happens) to persuade (without success) one of the girls to go with them! -
PM Srettha: 2025 a "Big Year" for Tourism
herfiehandbag replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
They absolutely hitched their wagon to the Chinese mass tourism phenomenon. The Chinese stopped coming, due to COVID and the Chinese economic troubles. The (unlikely) prospect of a Formula 1 race around the streets of Bangkok ( my giddy aunt, just imagine it!) is not going to resurrect that model. -

Yes, it is Thailand, and they serve beer in their own (Thai) measures, based on the metric system. The "pint" to them is simply a term, borrowed from the English language, applied to a glass of beer rather than a unit of measurement. In a similar way German and other European languages will have their own terms for a beer. It is further complicated by the fact that an American "pint" at 16 fluid ounces is 20% smaller than a British "pint" at 20 fluid ounces. -

Do they cater for enthusiasts for data analyse and the psychometrics of statistics? Asking for a friend who runs a bookshop, last seen with glazed eyes muttering about balconies.. -
Emmanuel Macron explains why he thinks Europe is in mortal danger
herfiehandbag replied to Social Media's topic in World News
If one is to believe the Guardian (the irrefutable and unimpeachable source of commentary and news on European politics?) the government being formed, under the direction of a veteran socialist senator (himself neither directly elected nor representative of the views expressed by the Dutch electorate) will consist of a number of experienced politicians, and a number of selected technically experts. In other words, the "old gang" will continue in power. Most explicitly not what the people voted for in November. -

Could be the way forward, convince the " burners" that if they set fires their willys will stop working! -
Now that the protesters/occupiers are slowly being cleared from the various campuses, some remarkable footage has emerged of the damage, graffiti and vandalized furnishings which they left behind. It seems quite reasonable to me that those who caused the damage should neither graduate nor be permitted to return to university, which is after all a considerable privilege, until the bill for cleaning up and restoration is met. How they meet that bill is of course up to them - Hamas' multi millionaire leaders may care to dip into their swollen bank accounts...

Emmanuel Macron explains why he thinks Europe is in mortal danger
herfiehandbag replied to Social Media's topic in World News
What she didn't mention is that the Dutch people elected a candidate for Prime Minister, who espoused those views, when was it, last November? 6 months on he has still not been allowed to form a government, and the old gang, emphatically rejected in that election are still in power. -

Well then the Shia will start on the Sunnis, the Sunnis on the Shia, both groups will of course exterminate the Suffis, and the Yezerdis; more killing rape and slaughter for the prophet "peace be upon him"! -
Urban myth or unfortunate fact ?

There are places and environments worldwide where violence is often lurking under the surface. If it's perpetrators think that they will get away with it, they will use it. Try driving a taxi on nights! -
Conservative Anxiety Peaks Ahead of Crucial Local Elections
herfiehandbag replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Personally I really cannot be bothered. The Tories are in a mess, and face devastating poll results. It is quite simply their own fault. Party discipline, party loyalty, effective leadership and formulating effective policies nationally are all in bits, and subservient to the egos of the movers and shakers in the parliamentary party. They squandered a significant majority and threw out the leader who won them that majority, in the pursuit of advancing their egos. They are "Donald Ducked", all worn out; the electorate know that and have abandoned them, even traditional tories like me ( not a member, not uncritical, but have consistently supported them electorally) have pretty much given up on them. They're toast, locally and nationally. They did it to themselves. They know it, and the electorate know it. I would love to know how many local council seats they will lose, not because people are enthused by Labour or heaven help us the Liberal Democrats, but because their traditional voting base can't be bothered to turn out. That would be the most telling statistic. As for the general election, they haven't a hope of winning it with the current leadership, and it is far too late to change. I'll hazard a guess, but if they had stood by Johnson, who was after all elected by the membership, and convincingly won them an election, whilst they could have been facing a challenge, they would still have been very much in the race. What an abject failure. -

Fame is transitory, fleeting even; speaking as someone who had 5 seconds of exposure on the BBC nightly news, peering round a corner in West Belfast and then sprinting across the road! The fame didn't last, although when I rang home that week my mum said she and all the neighbours had seen me on the telly!

British Tourist Warned Over Criticism of Thailand Online

Thaksin Enjoys a Busy Walking Street in Phuket on Monday Night
herfiehandbag replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I don't think that Thai doctors are quacks, in my interactions with the various Thai medical professions I have always been happy with their professional competence. The shenanigans surrounding the deal struck to allow Thaksin to return from exile reflect more the deviousness and obsession with not losing face amongst the ruling echelons. They obviously couldn't admit that the legal proceedings which led to his convictions, sentencing and exile were " Junta justice" so the medical elements provided a suitable smokescreen. Why did they need him back? Because, put simply, they have lost the younger generation, and Bangkok in particular, to the progressive movement; they desperately need to shore up support amongst the older generations - and that means Pheu Thai, and that means Thaksin. Must be bitter medicine! It has no bearing on the professional competence of doctors.
