Thais are starting to wake up to this mob now though and to where the money is really going and to the fact that they have had what was promised them stolen from under their noses while a few in uniform get even more unusually rich.
This is what you get when you have military coups though, as Thai history quite clearly has shown us.

Financial mismanagement on an unprecedented scale.
No wonder none of the weekly merry-go-round Finance Ministers want the job.

To be paying a bribe to a doctor to write the notes was obviously his downfall. Looks like he also lied to police as to who he really was. You need to read the Article, it reads like a short story about deceit, corruption and true investigative capabilities of the Keystone cops.
Oh the cops would have known exactly who he was, where he was living, what he was doing etc. As do they for all of us.
More like the payments stopped or he no longer was of any use or benefit.

Well, he'll have 10+ years in a Thai jail to think about it now.

However, this one was from Britain. A lot of stories about Brits acting badly lately. Why is that?
Unfortunately Thailand has started to attract the lower class Brits in numbers in recent years. 15-20 years ago they were confined to Spain and Portugal but budget long haul air travel put paid to that.
Hopefully one good thing about this COVID-19 crisis is that air travel will become more expensive and keep most of these mouth-breathers closer to home.

I believe the word has come down from the top, promote the biometric system at any opportunity. Especially the smart cars.
Of course, and it nicely fits the 'foreigners are bad' agenda and xenophobic sentiment they have been pushing at the moment to deflect from the real elephant in the room.
It's also a good opportunity to attempt to justify the billions of wasted money spent on it.

They just don't care, and want to make as much money as they can while they can.

This still doesn't say anything about NonImm O and NonImm OA visa or extension holders based on retirement. To my mind, further evidence that retirees rank pretty low.
Retirees are generally older and thus higher risk and may require medical care.
No surprise that they may still not yet be included.
Still, a reminder that proper due diligence must be done thoroughly before choosing to retire somewhere and not based on availability of bars and short times.

Yea, they get rewarded for their incompetence, and lack of will to do it right. They are the ones that should be lead out the door first, but will likely get rewarded.

57 minutes ago, bluesofa said:Thanks for replying, but I'm none the wiser regarding the gears and brakes? Did you mean because they're modern motorcycles they have now changed the gears/brakes to be the same as everyone else?
They are exactly the same as all other manufacturer's bikes. Clutch on the left hand, front brake on the right. Gear shifts with the left foot, rear brake on the right.
Incidentally the gearbox on the 650 twins is superb. A real joy to operate. Better even than most Japanese brands I have ridden.
The only negs about the bike would be the rear suspension at speed is a bit iffy, and could do with an upgrade, and the bike is a bit heavy for what it is. Other than that, all good.- 2

This has now made international news and made Thailand and the hotel in question look very bad indeed.
The damage done to the tourism industry by arresting and prosecuting this American man will make the online reviews pale into utter insignificance in comparison.
Another case of Thais acting without thinking of the consequences of their actions. All too common here.
The elephant in the room is obviously the Thai criminal defamation laws. Everyone should have the right to leave a negative review without fear of criminal prosecution or vilification. Civil action should obviously still be an option of course if the affected party decides to sue.
To those saying that the American man deserves his predicament, get a grip of yourselves.

I'm not really enamoured with the Royal Enfield's looks personally.
The new 650s are very nice looking IMO.
2 minutes ago, bluesofa said:I understand the Indian produced bikes have the brake on the right and gears on the left now?
I rented one in India years ago (obviously British produced), it took some getting used to.
They are modern motorcycles.
One thing that attracted me to the Interceptor, apart from the fact it was half the price of the equivalent Triumph Street Twin, was there was no gimmicks on it. No ride modes, no lcd dials etc. It is a motorcycle for the purist, to be enjoyed for the ride.
Make no mistake though, it is a better ride than the Street Twin. Again, just my opinion, but most reviewers out there tend to agree including MCN.

I have an Interceptor 650 and it is a great bike.
The new Royal Enfield twins are a completely different proposition to the older bullets and single cylinder thumpers with all their issues.
It should be noted that the RE Interceptor 650 is the best selling bike in the UK for 2019.

Many Thais I know play the online lotteries; Hanoi or Laos or whatever they are called. All set up to take money from and pay back into Thai bank accounts I note. There are also slot machine style sites. Never seen the appeal. Seems like a stupid person tax if I am honest.
About all the government can do is chase their tail blocking the sites though. Thais will not stop gambling online and new sites will spring up, while blocked sites will just shift to a new host and URL.

The biggest boondoggle in Thai history and they want to keep it going!?!
THB352 Billion in the red.
Time to accept that it will never recover, close it down permanently, liquidate it to at least pay some of the money due to creditors and move on.
Disgusting profligacy at play here.

You can send money overseas easily using the K-Bank app. It takes seconds and is reasonable on fees too.

To be fair the US has a long history of supporting and propping these kinds of regimes in South East Asia including in Thailand, Cambodia and South Vietnam.

2 minutes ago, ThailandRyan said:They are not being deported unless they are arrested, can you at least get that straight. By having them leave the Government here is ensuring that people come in on the right type of Visa they are required to have and not a loop hole riddles system that it has been in the past, even though they allowed it to happen because of corruption. I ran in and out every 90 days once upon a time and now am having to move to an extension of stay because of the way my O-A visa was being used to keep it alive can not be done anymore. Might be time to think about what it takes to stay long-term here or if not able to work it out it might be time to move on to another country that makes its easy. It is not an easy and free ride here anymore. I do have empathy for these folks that have to leave because they fell outside of the parameters in law to stay and Covid has created hardships, but it seriously is not the Thai Governments problem that folks can not qualify for another type of Visa or extension.
It has been getting progressively more difficult for the last 15 years, unsurprisingly since the military took over in 2005. The winds of change started blowing under Thaksin but this is ultimately what you get when people in brown and green uniforms run countries.

They have a 5 year Visa, it is called the TE Visa, but runs 500,000 THB.
A mate of mine just bought one before the pandemic. Now has lost his job offshore due to COVID-19 and is stranded in Thailand with no income.
No visa issues but now no income.
So it cuts both ways.

There's no mystery or confusion. Quite simple really.

There are no criminal background checks required for a Non-B visa or work permit IIRC. For English teachers? I don't know.
Thais will probably check their own system but they don't have access to foreign Police records. It should be noted that their own system (for locals anyway) is a complete nonsense.
What they usually do in other countries is ask for a Police background check prior to issuance of a work visa. You have to produce one from your home country if you are applying for Thai permanent residency.
