Ok. Iam 40 years old. My wife is 40 years old. Kid 7 years old. We had ED visa expiring this month. Our daughter was supposed to go to international school school this year.
So we cant continue our ED visas. We cant make ED visa for our daughter to obtain parental visas. We cant leave and reenter.
I have my own internet business, that allows me spending many many THB each month here. But i dont and i dont need a work permit for that.
I dont wanna take a chances with shady volonter visas and i dont trust in the Thai future enought to spend 800К for the family elite visas.
So,mister, whats are my options?
Any work in Thailand requires a work permit. Reason? They want your tax money.
You don't want to pay tax in the country you live in on an education visa that was given and is maintained on false pretenses.
You can't have your cake and eat it too.
Get legal and pay taxes or think about relocating elsewhere would be my advice.

This new visa is likely to be used for exactly that ! True short term tourists who only have a week or two holiday will come in under an exemption for 30 days (assuming no quarantine). The only other group to use this visa will be those who are not married, not 50 years or older or who have no cash for extension. So now...you can live here on a tourist visa apparently. What a mess....every new initiative just makes the whole mess less tolerable...O-A used to be great...now....applications for O-A visa's will virtually cease to exist. My extension requirements are exactly the same as someone with an O Visa, except due to the ambiguity in officials reading the text, I need to buy insurance. It makes no sense and just muddies the already murky waters. Let's see what they come up with next..."The Skint Elite", all you need is a promise to pay 500K and of course insurance.
If they are issuing only a few dozen of these new visas every week as proposed then it will quickly be forgotten about and it will be back to jumping through the usual hoops for the vast majority of long term 'tourists'.
There is far too much nationalist sentiment and fear of foreigners at the moment to allow use of this visa en masse.
Expect it to quietly disappear after the COVID-19 crisis subsides.

Everything I own is in BKK, I was supposed to get married in April now I have no idea when I can get home...I already have a valid visa for Thailand that I have paid for and have all the money in the Bank......Why can I not go home???????
You can go home any time, but it has been made clear to you from the authorities that your home is not Thailand.
Sorry for being harsh, but that is the reality of the situation.
A lot of people will need to reassess their status and rethink their plans going forward.

More welcoming less bureaucratic restrictions and less expensive. even the Chinese will change their destinations to take advantage of the benefits of the alternative destinations.
Lol Cambodia.
As much as I love the place it has nothing on Thailand.
Was lovely 15-20 years ago though, now ruined by Chinese developments.
Vietnam? Meh.

Assuming UK is high-risk then that's over £1000 !
SERIOUSLY !?
Yeah, you are paying for your government's incompetence in handling the COVID-19 crisis.

It feels like the elites have become terminally arrogant and they can't imagine how some lowlife farang could manage to live in The Kingdom for extended pervious of time while not working.
It's like they don't know Thailand is a cheap country which teeters on full blown 3rd world, or if they know they can't admit it and lose face.
Post of the thread and bang on.

It's not about self-importance - it is about reality. You would have a better idea if you met Thais who work in the businesses where we spend our money.
Yes, it is a good deal for us - as it is for Thais - that's what made it work so well, until immigration's greed began breaking this arrangement. Their greed-driven "crackdowns" - to route folks into the agent-moeny pipeline - only served to separate businesses (and their employees) from customers - us - had no other purpose or result, what so ever.
And if you have a Thai family to support, Immigration is even more difficult to deal with - directly hurting the Thais who benefit the most, because they have more emotional "leverage" to use on us. I cannot use the words (on this forum) which describe them.
Further evidence that they do not want us here.
Hints must be taken.

Wonderful watching this Thai clowning and ridiculous idiocy.
A joy to behold in their utter and total incompetence.
Enjoy it.

There is no money in Amnesty only in 100 tourist visas. It would be nice if they let the thousands of people know whats going on with the Amnesty as many still can't fly home. It's called empathy!!!
They have been very generous since end of March.
Now it is time for the hangers on to leave on one of the many departing flights daily.

Those cars have internet connection, which means they can check peoples records online in their cars , without needing to take them back to the police station .
Its not as if the police cars drive around watching foreigners
You are only kidding yourself on mate.
The cars belong to Immigration Police, not normal Police. They have facial recognition cameras mounted to the roof which scan all faces of all persons. They drive around and automatically identify and monitor foreigners and pick up whether they have overstay or any warrants or any other notices.
It is similar to the systems employed in the UK to track vehicles. It is entirely automated and works all the time when the vehicle is driving around. Hundreds and thousands of faces and number plates can be automatically scanned and the software sorts and reports back to the Police in the car.
There was a good thread on them some time ago where a poster had received a demonstration from Thai Immigration on how they work.

Why did you mention Nazi Germany then, if you werent comparing Thailand to Germany cira 1939 ?
Or did you just randomly mention they had the same colour uniforms, for no reason at all ?
I didn't mention Nazi Germany, you did.
The style of hats that the Thai Police wear is called a 'Kraut Rommel.'

Yes they do.

BTW, Thailand doesnt have police cars driving around monitoring foreigners
Yes it does.
Immigration has pick-ups and BMWs with facial recognition cameras mounted on the roof that monitor foreigners.
I have seen them in Songkhla and in Chonburi and there was one in my moo baan last month.

You made that comparison, not me.
Thanks for pointing out the similarity in the uniforms though, I am sure that is just coincidence and completely unintentional.

Indeed.
Is there any country that has expelled foreigners in this world "crisis" ?
Would look terrible. And remembered for sure.
But again : the late annoncements are to keep the immigration business via agents.
And the obvious point is Thailand lose a ton of money with no tourists, can not open for fear reasons (not arguing here), and foreigners already here are covid free and for most spending good money... Obvious political, image, and business wise : a kind of visa / permission to stay in country with no hassle but high fee should be annonced imo.
What other country has Police cars with facial recognition cameras mounted on the roof driving around monitoring foreigners?
Look at the kraut Rommel hats and brown uniforms and remember where you are.

I've noticed the same thing. A firm in Pattaya is pushing a one year "volunteer" visa, which they claim can be used just like a retirement visa, except no proof of income needed. Very strange.
Good luck to anyone trying to cling on with those types of visas.
Immigration sees right through these schemes and it only takes one officer to take a disliking and the rug gets pulled from under you.
I would say if you are not here properly and legally with the correct visa then it is time to consider returning home.
In fact I would extend that advice to everyone not doing 90-day reporting or on PR.

Once again, the Thai approach is not as flexible or well thought out as those solutions being offered through blanket "take no action" amnesties offered in other countries with plenty of notice, nor as simple as similar countries like Vietnam which allow you no-hassle up-front payments.
That is simply because they don't want long term foreigners here unless you are absolutely essential.
It is very well thought out, for their wants and needs, not yours or ours.
The message should be crystal clear yet some people are still not getting it.

Cabinet okays 9-month visas for foreigners
in Thailand News

You work in Thailand so you need to pay Thai taxes and part of the process involves getting a work permit, it is pretty simple.
The fact that you cannot just stay here and do what you want because you pay taxes in Russia should be self-evident.
