You are being a little melodramatic.
Nobody said abandon them - just that they should be advised to stay at home, not the entire world's population! They can still get food delivery and emotional support from relatives. They could even go out for a weekly shop to get essentials, like many of us have been doing.
The point is that if you are not high risk, you would not likely be a burden on the hospitals. You would get a mild illness and manage at home. The hospitals would be reserved for severe cases (which has not been the case thus far in many countries - low risk people taking up beds)
Depression? Yes, I worry about the mental health of EVERYONE stuck at home, even more those out of work with depending children!
Suicide has gone up during covid. You can subtract those figures from your 1.2% and tell me what percentage you get then? (and also subtract the regular normal death figures from influennza to get a baseline comparing the two viruses).
I worry more about children not being able to see friends, socialize, develop normally. I worry about the mental health impacts of children more than elderly. They are now glued to their screens for e-learning 5-8 hours a day. Screen time consumption is related to depression in children among other nasty mental illnesses.
And then there are the poor children whose schools have provided zero e-learning. They just get no education cos of this.
