Thanks Owl. Had second thoughts after posting, about posting her photo, but she doesn't mind. She is the light of my life despite the odd temper tantrum.

Here's a few photos to put my previous post in context. Not sure how to comment between photos.
1 and 2 Eucalypts front and back
3 The spot my girl wanted the lemon tree. Compromised with a lime.
4 She put in a bergamot. Thought it might be too cold but it's going good. My thai ex comes by to get leaves for her curry.
5 Part of her temple area with a little Ganesh. How do Buddha and Ganesh work together. Not sure.
6 A bigger ganesh. In Thailand in the before times. Pre covid. Hopefully back together in the near future.

If you are going to use poker analogies at least get them right. You can't see and raise that's an illegal bet. You simply raise. To see is technically a flat call and to raise is a completely separate bet. You can not call and raise in one in the sequence of the official rules. It would be considered angle shooting to see a reaction before you finally raise. So don't lecture me about what is possible when you seem to have a hard time understanding basic rules.
Anyway you are assuming the dems gain the senate and can simply appoint whoever they want at will. If that was the case Obama would have not left a vacant seat. I am not sure what would be involved to change the law to load the court. If it's that easy both sides will do it until we have more judges than people
A bit pedantic on the gambling thing Crying Dick. And I hope the picture of Nancy is a tribute. For she is my hero.

Thanks for the reply. I just watched the video and couldn't see that he forgot her name nor did he say anything but hail and farewell her. Maybe you saw a different video.
He did good at the DNC convention, good at the CNN town hall just yesterday. It is fair to say he's old and a bit slow but Trumps no spring chicken.
The amount of comments Trump makes that are false, silly, and or dangerous are so common as to not warrant that much intention. Last couple of days: The world will get cooler, scientists dont know, the coronavirus will go away, herd mentality, and the fact that he has supporters bunched together at a rally day after day with no masks. Breathtaking.
I suppose at this stage it's all in the eyes of the beholder or voter.

That isn't what you said. You suggested that Fox News was labeling small, unaffiliated violent groups who were not Antifa as Antifa. That happens to be incorrect.
I have no doubt that Fox News and any of the deeply partisan TV news organisations on the other side will make the maximum use of whatever cards they are dealt. You can hardly fault them for that in the current hyper-reality.
It might be painful to face this reality head on, but any solution will require more cops, not fewer. The actual Democrat establishment knows this, which makes their use and endorsement of BLM deeply hypocritical. This has become a "By Any Means Necessary" election for the Democrats and, even if they win, the legacy of that will be more damaging to America than anything Trump has done.
In any case, while I respect your exposition of your views, we are clearly experiencing different realities. It would be foolhardy of me to try to argue fact-by-fact, so, I shall wish you a good day and head out in search of a strong coffee and a delicious banana pancake ????☕????
Fair nuff. Enjoy your pancake.

Not at all FFF.
Considering there are just a few million people in Australia, their athletes have conquered the world in many sports.
I've great respect for some of Australia's athletes; Dawn Fraser*, Ms Goolagong, Rod Laver, more recently Shane Warne and their distance swimmers. A group of world beaters; Ian Thorpe, Grant Hackett, Glen Housman** and Kieren Perkins. Too many to mention. Not as enthusiastic about their politicians; especially Brundage.
Ned Kelly's spirit lives on; needed more than ever in these tyrannical times.
My mum took no nonsense from anyone. No sisters, but seven brothers. Irish father; London mother. Passed away aged 84, in the same month as my wife, 13 years ago. That's why I find myself here. We all have a tale to tell though.
* Harshly treated by a nasty politician.
** Cheated out of the world 1500m record.
We struggle a bit in Tennis now though we had a good result in the recent US Open. They took away a lot of the tennis courts and built apartments so for the average person there's not many places to play.
It's funny seeing how some portray the Aussie slang. Just finished an interesting series, though slow to start, called the Leftovers. Voted best series of the last decade by many in the States about what would happen if a whole lot of people just disappeared. The third series was set partly in Australia and though it wasn't too cliched there were lots of blokes eating tucker and having a coldie and fair dinkum shielas. Like if the English were portrayed saying 'Cor Blimey' all the time.

No, they call themselves Antifa. They are not "sometimes violent", their raison d'être is violence and intimidation. Such groups have been a key tactic for all extremist groups to attain power, whether on the left or right. Yes, all such criminal networks operate in cells
It is a self-damaging blindness on the part of Democrats to ascribe everything you are uncomfortable with to Fox News.
Again, I am saying that this election is yours to lose. A president has never been re-elected in a situation this dire. If Trump does get re-elected, it will be 100% down to the Democrat failure to react appropriately and bravely in realtime to the overreactions of those with whom you are associated.
I think you'll agree that their motives of combating fascists and racists such as neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other far-right extremists, has some merit, though I 100 per cent agree the use of violence should not be tolerated. They are not democrats.
If you don't think Fox News saw Antifa as a go to scare tactic on the law and order issue then we can agree to disagree. The violent protests is a fair issue of concern but Fox News coverage, and blaming of democrats, is over the top.
I will say gun violence in say Chicago is a different issue and it shocks me it is allowed to continue. I put it down to kids being allowed access to guns and breakdown of families. If anywhere there should be a crackdown its there. Probably getting off topic.

The American system of political parties choosing judges stinks. The judges are appointed for life so the Court can swing to the left or right dependant on who dies when a particular party has control of the Senate and is President.
It's tasteless to begin appointing another judge when Ginsburg hasn't even had her funeral. In the UK judges are appointed by fellow judges. The Law Courts are separate from Parliament.
I saw some where that when they made the lifetime appointment rule people didn't tend live so long. Maybe in 2020 they could limit it to 20 years. Still long enough to be independent but not so long that it's a bit ridiculous.

You think they will have debates? I would be impressed if they are willing to risk that. His exposure to unscripted moments has been tightly controlled so far. I think part of the problem is that, as even his fans would admit, he does sometimes say some very odds and that runs counter to the "good ol' Joe" narrative that most effectively counters Trump's reputation.
Older and slower is fine. Most Americans yearn for some comforting, old-fashioned boredom after the Trump rollercoaster. The problem is when he goes off-script, the crazy stuff runs against that image, but his handlers have done a good job so far in minimizing the opportunities for gaffes.
The interview with Cardi B, purveyor of such fine ballads as "Wet Ass Pussy" which I am playing as I write this, was particularly painful. I do understand that they have to play every card they have but it did rather highlight the complete lack of interviews with even friendly journalists (and they are pretty much all rooting for him).
Yes. After the outcry over the failure to mention burning American cities at any point during the DNC itself. That was a misjudgement.
That distinction is important and that is why it is vital for the mainstream left to condemn extremism. Both morally and electorally.
It doesn't matter what groups call themselves. Names are often chosen to specifically hide the actual nature of a group. The Nazis were the National Socialist Workers Party.
In terms of their actually actions - thuggery, burning books, deplatforming, destroying public properties, causing tens of millions of damage to deeply leftwing universites such as Berkley, smashing the skulls of peaceful protestors bicycles locks, peaceful protestors in hospital, bomb threats against premises hosting peaceful gatherings, petrol bombs, shining industrial strength lasers into the eyes of police and security personnel doing their jobs etc - there is no more fascist organization active in America today.
Likewise, Black Lives Matter seem to have very little concern for actual black lives. They have nothing to say about the nightly slaughter of black-on-black shooting in cities such as Chicago. Their serious demand that the police be defunded or stood down in Democrat-run cities will only lead to more such deaths.
I would put Biden gaffes up against Trumps gaffes for signs of old age especially recently. Biden's gaffes tend to make you feel uncomfortable whereas Trump gaffes, if they are gaffes, can cost lives e.g. the herd mentality line would be funny if he wasn't advocating a theory that could lead to a further million deaths.
I get the feeling there are small and separate groups , sometimes violent as you say, that probably have a range of motives but are not one group, that have been lumped together by Fox News as Antifa.
Antifa are not the democrats are not Antifa. Joe Biden should not be held responsible for them as he never supports such view points. However there is a guy called Trump who actively retweets and supports right wing groups, QANON, etc.

19 minutes ago, Poet said:I am not political but this could very well help nudge swing voters towards the Republicans. Considering the hysteria around the last Supreme Court selection, and multiplying that by the current already-fevered atmosphere, many radical leftists will now shift even further into orbit.
I predict Trump will nominate Judge Amy Coney Barrett, counting on the Democrats to monster her the way they did Judge Brett Kavanaugh. That hurt the Democrats in the polls but, this time, they will be attacking the sort of likeable, accomplished woman that suburban moms can identify with.
Since the pandemic hit, I have said that this election was the Democrats' to lose. I initially thought Biden was a mistake but hadn't realized that the pandemic would allow them to avoid the debates, so, an astonishingly lucky set of circumstances. As long as they can present him as boring but likeable Uncle Joe, the antithesis of Trump, he's perfect, they only need to control the real Biden so that he doesn't spoil that illusion. I still think Kamala was a mistake but she, too, benefits from being kept out of the public eye. They mainly win this by staying under the radar and allowing the election to be a referendum on Trump.
What swings things towards the Republicans are when events turn the focus to the worst instincts of the Democrats. For example, not mentioning the riots once during the DNC, not even some vague words of condemnation or even sympathy for the black small business owners whose livelihoods being destroyed by BLM and Antifa, solidified the law and order issue in Trump's favor. Now, the treatment of the Supreme Court candidate may well surface the worst instincts of the Democrats.
With just 45 days to go until the election, RBG's death lobs a grenade into the situation. The Democrats need to maintain discipline and keep their heads down. They have the most to lose by allowing their hysterical instincts to take over. This thread is a preview of how badly that could make them look to regular voters.
I find myself replying to your posts because they are interesting. I think Biden has shown in the last 4 weeks or so that he has still got it. I think he falls down when he tries too hard to act young and vibrant with the aviator's on and then out come the gaffes. Trumps portrayal of him as old and senile will hopefully backfire in the debates. Biden was great in the vice president debates and yes, he is a bit older and slower, but hopefully he's still got it.
I think your point about the black shop owners is somewhat fair, though I think it is cherry picking one point, but Joe Biden has been more than clear that violence should not be tolerated.
I was concerned about Kamala Harris, and preferred Susan Rice, but Kamala Harris is smart and hard and she's been tested.
Hopefully people will see that you can have left leaning ideas like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, that improve the lives of many, with less discrimination and increased freedoms, and it doesn't make you far left or Antifa. Keep in mind Antifa means antifascist which one might think is not such a bad thing though that doesn't legitimize violence etc.

So not all scientists then? If it's not unanimous then it's not settled.
If worried why not wear goggles?
That's the beauty of science. Scientists get the opportunity to question the current beliefs and if they are smart enough and do the hard research they'll convince others.
You and I aren't scientists so I think you'll agree there is a point where you have to draw a conclusion based on statistics logic and common sense.
If 97 per cent of scientists believe in something I'll tend to go with that. You can always look at the arguments of the 3 per cent, and maybe 3 out of a 100 times they'll be right, but living day to day I'll go with the consensus.
Similar with the goggles. If new research says my chances of catching it would be reduced by 97 per cent ..I'll wear goggles. At this point it appears to be a theory with some possible merit. Or I'll believe the scientists but just decide I don't want to wear goggles and I'll keep my distance.
You can take the word of scientists and not be a sheep at the same time.

'You haf taken away my childhood' I like Greta. Gutsy and a straight talker. Not sure she deserves it but we all know who she is and what she's after and I can't think of others of a similar ilk. Sometimes the most intense people get the message through. Nice to see a scientist get it who works out smart ways to actually achieve climate outcomes and at the same time can help the poorer and richer economies to cope and grow and lead to a stronger peace.

Many thai young ladies have jobs that involve waiting around for customers so they just sit there playing on the phone. And all those sweet drinks and western fast food still has some allure as something special and some thing there parents and grand parents never had. It's a concern as their DNA might find it hard to cope with such a big change to diet towards dairy sugar and fried meats - just see the ballooning rate of diabetes in India.
Vanity and youthful vigour may win the day though - they need to look good for their tiktok videos and facebook posts so many will probably limit the fat.

That film 'The good, the bad, the ugly', comes easily to mind for this Log.
One good is that Mildred's school has laid the turfs. Very nice too.
Also good was Charkie eating at long last. She had a dodgy spell of a few days when she was completely off her food. It started around the time when Mrs Owl threw a chair at her. It missed but caused damage in other areas.
Another fix job for the farang. But! Charkie was not hurt. That's the main thing.
I'd been trying different foods for Charkie. She didn't seem to take to any until, I had a master thought; dog food. Yes! Beef-a-la-dog.
Milly said to put a bit of plastic over the pic of the dog; which I did. Don't want Charkie to get confused she intimated. Quite right too. After all it's Charkie's role to chase rats and lizards, not hunt down farangs in packs.
On with the good.
Got some nice pics of the VW. Went into the restaurant to ask some questions, but no one spoke English, so I just snapped away.
Couldn't find any etchings on the glass to say it's year of manufacture. And no one to ask. I'll try again another time.
Also staying with the good; sold another water tank for 2k baht. Family bought it. Didn't get any dosh; but it's early days yet!
Only two left now. And they are ear-marked for Guy.
The bad!
Spent an hour yesterday afternoon sorting through the discarded eucas. Mrs Owl had simply thrown them onto the heap. Found about 25, which is 50 baht; if you had to buy them. But! I always get emotionally attached to natures' little wonders. If the euca was beyond redemption or simply not there, I emptied the soil out and put the plastic sleeves in another bag; for burning later.
The ponds; one, two and three had their water level dropped about 150mm due to raising the water level in the paddy.
Now Ban Dung is rewiring. Not sure if it's leccy or internet or something else, but it's on the go; big time.
The lads (or lasses) doing the work, do not tidy up after them. At 17-00 yesterday, after work, I investigated.
Just plain ugly! But there is beauty in the most unusual places.
A couple of squirrels. Lovely! Or was it the same one featured twice? Hard to tell; I think there's two.
Had a trio of letters delivered in the week. Milly said they were for a teacher that was to be retired off. Teaching limit in state run schools being 60.
Not sure what to do! Put money in the envelopes! Stick them on the wall. Take them to Buddha. When Mrs Owl starts speaking to me again I might find out.
M's school was getting some work done. Daughter says it's for a flag pole. I think it's something grander. After all; a crane!
We will soon see!
Now, the really good news is that there is a storm brewing up off the coast of Vietnam, and it's coming our way (Isaan'a way). Not moving fast. About 3km an hour; gentle walking speed. So should be with us,,,, well soon. Can't rush these things.
Mrs Owl has mumbled a few words in my direction. Sounded something like; "you have to give me money." Or similar. This is the real testing time for the silence. Didn't win on the lottery yesterday, so it's back to old faithful; Owl the farang. But as he is the most despicable person in the whole of Isaan; there-in lies a problem for teerak. Where to get substantial amounts of dosh! Watch this space!
M is continuing with her testing at school. Scored 60% in her written math's test at the beginning of the week. Today Science!
Made a batch of reishi yesterday. Now there is something of a dilemma here. How can I justify buying Lao Khao, if I insist I have no money? Perhaps have to drink it neat. 0% alcohol. Very bitter without the Lao Khao though.
Getting ready for the cyclone/typhoon/huricane/storm Noul'. Coming this way; soon.
Bye y'all.
Love your posts. Best thing on Thaivisa. Been reading for a bit less than a year. It's a respite from covid and politics and such.
Your story just reminds me of my Thai partner. Love her and that but she can get bratty and tempestuous sometimes. One time I just asked if we could please not plant a lemon tree at a certain spot as it would get too big and too close to the front door. Got 2 days of grief and silence culminating in throwing things and pushing over a chair that put a small whole in the wall. That's when I drew the line and said I look after you, let you do your thing, and if you do this again it is over. Seemed to the trick. Well, somewhat.
Most Thai husbands don't look after the kids and the farm like you so what's her problem. She has to be reminded that throwing a chair at the cat and breaking a window is not funny or cute. It's harder with the kids.
Interested in the eucalypts.. I am surrounded by big gum trees here. Didn't know you could farm them - I suppose it's for the oil.
I'll go back to being a reader now and leave this post to the expat farmers.

I'm far more likely to pick up the virus on my fingers than through the air.
I am not sure if you are saying this, but nearly all scientists say that a mask is better than no mask including those at the CDC.
But Donald says that a mask may be worse than no mask, and he says he knows people who agree, so he's probably right.
As you say it sounds like eye protection may be even better though. Not sure about wearing safety goggles to the supermarket.

They dont even have to be sneaky about it.
Simply ceasing pension increases, whilst not actually 'taking away' anything will reduce the debt burden on the national purse, as inflation eats away at the relative amount of the payments.
Don't forget where you saw this theory first.
It's a logical step.
For what its worth I really doubt this. Being outside Australia you might not see it but I think pensioners have more political clout than you give them credit for. A decision not to increase and A Current Affair and all the radio stations would be on the warpath. If liberals said no increase, and labour said keep the increase for example, I think it would be enough for labour would win.
If they were to limit increases they might use a method similar to that they used ín 2015 where they changed the index to increase the pension from the higher of the CPI and Pensioner and Beneficiary Living Cost Index, and then benchmarked to average weekly earnings, to just the increase in CPI. That was aimed to save $450 million over 5 years. As it happens wages haven't increased much so CPI increase has probably been pretty much as good. Haven't got the figures though.
I think they might be more likely to change the age of eligibility which would affect future generations but not those currently getting it or those currently over 55. They might also tinker with the assets and income tests.
