Report IKEA Goes Cashless at Key Thai Stores Amid Mixed Reactions
Patong2021 replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
IKEA has a Point of Sale data system that can turn out detailed reports on the volume of customers who transact use electronic means, and the value of each transaction. If the consumer is a member of Ikea Family discount program, then Ikea has demographic data like age, type of dwelling, and location of the customer. Customers can pay with Visa, Mastercard, PromptPay, True Money Wallet Pay and Line Pay. However, Ikea is not using Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung's version. All this to say, they have a good idea where they can go to electronic payments without a problem and where they need to keep the cash registers. Going electronic will reduce physical crime like holdup and direct theft of cash by employees. It will also facilitate administration and I can see a few jobs in cash accounting being eliminated. -
Report IKEA Goes Cashless at Key Thai Stores Amid Mixed Reactions
Patong2021 replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Please think it through and keep the Ikea customer demographic in mind. The customer base for Ikea is already using digital payments which includes debit and credit cards in addition to telephone apps. The company most likely looked at its transactions in detail and realized that very few if any were paying with cash at the branches where the change will occur. The dinosaur brigade that you refer to who refuse to use debit cards or payment apps, are not likely to be customers, let alone have the intelligence or ability to assemble Ikea furniture anyway, so no need to worry about whether or not they agree. Ikea sells low cost disposable furniture. The customer base is well documented IKEA's target market primarily consists of the global middle-class group, particularly individuals aged 20-34. In the USA The credit and financing company Earnest recently analyzed a dataset of more than 10,000 American shoppers’ spending habits to address a pertinent question: When do consumers ditch Ikea? The answer: at approximately the age of 34. -
Travel Thailand's Chinese Tourism Faces Crisis as Arrivals Plummet
Patong2021 replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Quick, panic. Run around and wail with nonsensical grief. Sure, Chinese headcount is down, but the total of all tourists increased in Q 1 and more importantly, revenue was up. The Nation reported on this when the Jan1-March 31 numbers were released by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports; - 9,549,004 foreign tourists, which was 1.91% increase compared to the same period in 2024. - Tourism revenue increased by 10.47% year compared to the same annual period. Although tourist head count from China (and South Korea) has declined, it is up for the Middle East, Japan and Europe. The takeaway is that higher revenue generating tourists have replaced the Chinese who are not coming. And the fact remains that the Chinese are still the largest foreign national visitors group visiting Thailand. -
You have misrepresented the article. It was an OP-ED, an opinion. Why describe it as the newspaper comparing anyone? The newspaper did not do that. You obviously do not understand what an OP-ED is. An op-ed (abbreviated from "opposite the editorial page") is an opinion piece that appears on a page in the newspaper dedicated solely to them, often written by a subject-matter expert, a person with a unique perspective on an issue, or a regular columnist employed by the paper. Forward has a relatively small paid audience of between 5,000 and 10,000. (Advertised circulation of 28,000 which includes freebies and complimentary access). If your intent was to show that a Jewish audience media outlet is associated Mr. trump with nazis, you are wrong. All they did was present was an opinion contrary to the editorial board's opinion.

He is not in a position to negotiate. He was not prepared for the reaction with its needless costs. The end result is that he must retreat. China is winning. The US consumer is losing.

Thank you for providing an intelligent response. The route is over serviced. OZ/KE, CI, BR, CX, SQ, JL, NH, JX and PI, all have scheduled service, albeit with 1 connection. In addition are the mainland Chinese carriers. What is competitive? In both economy and premium classes, the carriers are priced close to each other. The TG route would be direct, and so it could be expected to be 10-20% more expensive as direct routes are usually more expensive. Air Canada flies direct from Vancouver. Although a seasonal route, it has reported relatively high passenger load and is often significantly more expensive that connecting options. There needs to be a market demand, and there isn't enough to justify regular service. The layover is good for you if you use it to walk around and have a bit of movement. The BR/CI schedule isn't that bad as the flights still arrive mid morning. The flights were stopped because they were not profitable. Aircraft loads were not high enough to support service.

Report Foodpanda to Exit Thailand, Halting Services on May 23
Patong2021 replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Thailand has 2 leaders in food delivery operations; Lineman and Shopee. Both of them deliver more than restaurant food. My local Lotus and 7-11 can have Lineman drivers in the checkout with various items picked up for delivery. Food Panda Thailand had losses in every year of its operations. It was not sustainable and should have closed down years ago. -
I suggest you look at the small pork farmers and the fish farms of Thailand. Do you know what they feed shrimp?

Opinion Russian Teacher to Thais: Drop ‘Farang’ if 'Ni Hao' Offends

Is the answer that it is dirty and/or pox ridden? -
If the world had your attitude, there would be no progress, no improvement, no redress for wrongful acts, no checks and balances and no democracy. David has a "real" job just as the young interns at the White House have a job, and just as the chair and deputy chair of the Republican Party have a "real" job. You are the type of person who complains about young people not caring, of not taking charge of their lives. And yet, here we have a smart, well spoken and polite person who is trying to make a change in the political party you regularly criticize for being out of touch and fossilized and you dismiss him. He is not trying to "run things". He is trying to bring in new people and new ideas, to initiate a rejuvenation. In order to succeed, one must adapt to the changing environment.

Report Swiss Man Faces Arrest in Phuket Over Alleged Assault on Thai Doctor
Patong2021 replied to snoop1130's topic in Phuket News
Please take the time to read the history of the event. It is more than a kick. It was an assault and then not being truthful. The victim was not just assaulted but accused of lying and other wrongful behavior. She gave this man, who has a history, an opportunity to take responsibility and to be a big boy. He chose to thumb his nose at her and at the courts. -
Yes, there has been success at the border if the sole measurement is interdictions. However, what is not discussed is at what cost and whether the current effort is sustainable. The 2025 for just the US CBP is $19.8Billion; for 68,069 employees. Add in the other deployed assets from the military, FBI, ATF, DOJ, DOT and NSA and I think there is another $1 Billion+ spent. Resources have been diverted from the ports to the land borders with the result that fewer cargo shipments are being checked. This is why drugs are still entering the USA and why so many stolen vehicles and restricted items are still leaving the USA. Immigration reform is needed as the article states, and what is needed more is addressing the reasons why there is a problem at the southern border. The central American countries and Mexico have to do more. And here is one of the quiet issues that has gone under reported in the tariff war. The tariffs have made central America a desirable location to set up garment and low tech manufacturing operations. If the garment manufacturing is transferred from SE Asia to Latin America, employment will be created and the poverty and lack of opportunity that drives migration can be blunted.

Opinion Russian Teacher to Thais: Drop ‘Farang’ if 'Ni Hao' Offends
Patong2021 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
What is wrong with saying Ni Hao? I often use a japanese or korean greeting to my work colleagues. Everyone knows which Netflix content I was watching the night before. 🫠 I sometimes use Italian or French when I say thank you. and I usually swear in French. I don't get why anyone would have a tantrum over this. Maybe the issue is with the luk khrueng guy and not the park visitors. Seems to me that he has some heritage issues, playing the Thai pride card a bit too hard. And none of my Thai acquaintances or friends have ever called me farang (when I am around). Lots of other names, sometimes semi insults, but never the farang guy. I have not heard any of thais married or living with westerners call westerners farang either. This suggests to me that the use of the term farang may be more specific to certain social groups.- 365 replies

Report Thailand Eyes European Tourists Amid Asian Visitor Decline
Patong2021 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Thailand has burnt alot of bridges to Europe and it still doesn't get it that the trend in Europe is to holidaying in clean and safe destinations. This is why Japan is experiencing a tourism boom now. Late Spring & Summer tourism season will start mid May and Europeans are not going to SE Asia for rainy season. They are going to Canada and there is a trend to visiting Australia and New Zealand. Europeans at the minimum require the following; - Access to clean air. Who wants to pay several thousand Euro to come and suffer air quality that is unsafe? -Access to clean beaches. Thailand hasn't published beach water quality in years and we all know why. Many beaches are tainted by debris because there is no clean up. - Access to honest transportation. The transport thugs in some regions like Phuket have had their way for years. - Competitive airfares. There isn't much Thailand can do about that. -
It is the way in which the USA has gone about addressing its concerns. Do you need a list of the stupid acts? Let's start with A for Australia. The USA is running a trade surplus, and in its disgusting greed declares that this is not good enough. Jamieson Greer stated before the US Senate hearings, "that the USA should be running up the score". This is what the USA is demanding. There is a free trade agreement in effect with the USA that the USA has unilaterally violated. Think about it. That isn't fair or reasonable trade, that is bullying and exploitation. The USA's word means nothing. No one is going to rally to the USA side in this dispute because the USA chose to fight with everyone at the same time.

A Night in the Thai Police Station
Patong2021 replied to Hellfire's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
You were not interrogated with electric shock, nor were you at a gulag and nor were you abused. You were stopped as a DUI and treated appropriately. You are now behaving as if you are some sort of entitled person. Take responsibility for your poor choices and learn from it. No one is going to feel particularly sorry for a DUI, considering the amount of hurt they needlessly cause.- 285 replies

A Night in the Thai Police Station
Patong2021 replied to Hellfire's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Instead of making assumptions, you should learn what the laws are first. The legal blood alcohol limit for licensed drivers is 0.05%, and applies to both Thais and and foreigners equally. As in other countries, a lower limit applies for new drivers - those holding a license for less than five years, the limit is 0.02% The 0.02% limit applies to drivers under the age of 20, provisional license holders, and those without a valid license. You did not have a valid drivers license , so your limit was 0.02%. And yes, the allow allows for a 6 month imprisonment for first offenders, although it is typically used when there is serious injury. Jail isn't supposed to be nice. It is supposed to be a deterrent. You were in Thailand, not in the UK or Eu where detention centers are comfy and a nice sojourn for the criminal class. You are not going to gain any sympathy for being DUI.- 285 replies

There was no abuse of power. Sometimes, foreigners who are arrested are later discovered to be engaged in other criminal activities or are on overstay.- 285 replies

Why repeat the false claim that came from the groups who tried to promote that this was a staged event with crisis actors. It was easy to verify if he was present or not. David Hogg was most certainly at the school when the shooting occurred and the manner in which the school custodian/janitor saved the students in his class has been documented by the people who were in the classroom. His sister was a freshman at the school too. 17 kids were murdered and 17 others seriously injured. Many were freshman students,, others were seniors like David, and some were teachers/coaches. Everyone knew someone. There was no stolen valor. The kid, like the other survivors lived through a horrific needless tragedy. He has not claimed to be anything other than a person who had to live through this. Why you would try and trash him in this way is pretty low.

A Night in the Thai Police Station
Patong2021 replied to Hellfire's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I don't understand what your concern or complaint is? Read to me like you were treated nicely and no differently than the other detainees. If one removes all the fluff the event can be summarized as follows; - You were inebriated and stopped while driving. - You were taken to a police station, processed and put in the drunk tank with other people. - You were arraigned, adjudicated and assessed a fine. - No one assaulted you or extorted you. All of this is remarkably mild compared to other countries. In many EU countries, some US states and Canada, if it was a weekend, you may have stayed in detention until the next working day. It having been Easter and if you were stopped on a Friday, that could have been 4 days in custody. Elsewhere your trial might not have been for 6-12 months during which time you might have been subject to a mandatory driving suspension for 72 hours to 30 days. And if found guilty seen your license suspended for a period of time and a very large increase in your insurance premium. In the USA, a conviction would be grounds for deportation with some states requiring a mandatory jail sentence, e.g. Arizona @ 10 days. In Canada, it is a felony offence and so you would be then be barred from entering many countries, In Norway, you get dinged for a fine that is proportional to your monthly salary. You got off lucky, especially since you did not harm anyone.- 285 replies
