Incidently does anyone know anything about the building next to Northshore and why that has been left, I was told it used to be a hotel but nobody would work there because of ghosts
Timely query on your part
A reinforced concrete roof sheltered the Beach Road entry to this long closed hotel. Reinforced because there was a garden planted on top of it complete with half a dozen palm trees
Toward the end of last week Somchai and a dozen of his mates came in and using hand tools removed the palm trees. And after failing to make any progress in actually removing the concrete a jack hammer was brought in and finally a tractor shovel and the overhead is now history. Trucks are now hauling away the debris.
Thus far this operation looks like amateur hour

A year ago I posted on another board that a farang friend who owns a small bar in Pattaya was approached by a representative of GMM Grammy and told that if he was playing Thai music in his bar he should purchase an authorizing license from GMM Grammy. He declined as he does not play Thai music in his bar.
Not long after I was in an internet shop owned by a farang friend when 8-10 people came in the shop and started examining the computers. Most of these folks were in plain clothes but there were also uniformed Pattaya police as well. After a while they started loading the computers onto a pickup truck and took them away to the police station at Soi 9. Cost to get the computers back was 50,000 baht. The "crime" was having Thai music downloaded on some of the computer's hard drives. That is, the shop is responsible for the content on its computers no matter who has done the downloading.
And two weeks ago it cost a small bar here in Pattaya 15,000 baht to have their little 6K baht stereo returned by the police. Oh, and also, to keep the cashier from being locked up The crime, despite repeated warnings not to do so by the owner, was the playing of a Thai music CD by one of the staff. The music was heard outside the bar apparently by the police and not long after, half a dozen officers arrived to supress this criminal activity. And yes, the bar is the same one I mentioned up top
I notice the artists who are complaining about piracy because they're not getting their share of the royalties. I'm guessing the publishers, i.e. GMM Grammy, are doing ok and it appears from the above examples that the MiB are doing ok as well.

As mentioned the prices in Artisan's list are way out of date.
Stayed at Cookies in Dec. 2005 and rooms were 1800 baht per night. Also stayed at Bamboo Bungalows and they were priced at 1500 baht. Figure high season prices to be roughly double that of similar accomodations in Pattaya.
Cheaper would be the older huts and also rooms on the land side of the main road. And rooms on the beach but away from the road might be cheaper but you'd need transportation.

The form is simply in letter form. Applicant fills in his/her name, date and place of birth, passport number along with place of issue, date of issue and expiry date.
Form then states:
"He/she affirms that he/she receives in amount US$________every month from the United States Government and/or other sources."
And the next paragraph is just a boiler plate request that Thai Immigration give assistance to the applicant in extending his/her current visa.

Top's carries the big bottles of the lite and regular. Since they're both 5% alcohol I think the word "lite" refers to light in taste, not calories

Yes they have all the football in english on the thai sat it has 2 languages thai & english just use your remote to get the english and its free. Also all english channels on agila sat like fox. espn. star. also free. but you need a moving sat dish.
Are you saying that if we get our Thai Tv via UBC satellite, we can use the language button to get the original soundtrack - as per normal? If you're right that solves all the problems. I wonder how we can check this?
I tested this out the other night during the Arsenal- Barca match. Was able to get the English commentary on UBC's Thai TV channel by changing languages using the third button down on the right side of the UBC remote. Same commentary as the regular UBC feed. But there's no guarantee that this will be the same for the World Cup is there?

Soi 6 bars were asked to keep the girls inside until after 17:00 yesterday only. Bangkok police were in town for a meeting at the nearby Grand Sole Hotel.

Perhaps not so surprising given that in the USA 57% of all uni students are women and there is a continuing upward trend. This article from USA Today discusses a few of the possible reasons. Some of which are likely applicable to Thailand.

For decent Thai food (and western) try the Jazz Pit on Soi 5 between Beach Rd and 2nd Rd.
Excellant food with an atmosphere to match
Most memorable part of a Nov. dinner at the Jazz Pit was the 350 baht charge for a glass of Aussie red

From this thread of last Nov. Vientiane does not appear to be a good choice for obtaining a NI-B visa.

North Pattaya is spoilt for choice when it comes to Pizza. You have Pizza Hut at big C. On Second road after soi zero you have La Piolla. From Beach raod side on Soi Zero leaft hand side there is the Tratorria which is ok, the Smoked Salmon is excellent. Further up Soi zero on the right there is another one (can't remember its name) but I didn't like it, there was have an inch of cheese on a soggy crust. The newest of them all is Monte Carlo, about 50 metres up Soi 1 on the left (opposite Markland) very good for my taste, very crispy base.
That would be Trattoria Toscana on Soi Zero which is the best pizza I've had recently, i.e. it seemed better than the ones I've had there previously. Crust is still cutable when you're half way through the pizza.
The other you mention is Le Arcate. I stopped going there once Toscano opened. I don't know how they stay in business since the Marina Regent Hotel was demolished as they got a lot of business from guests who were staying there. They have no visiblilty from Beach Rd. and since Soi Zero is blocked off you cannot reach it from 2nd Rd.

Also the Bangkok Bank on Sukhumvit near Soi 8. New accounts is upstairs on the 2nd (UK 1st) floor - take a number and have a seat. Need passport, a local mailing address (though you'll never get mail from the bank so pretty much any address will do) and some baht.
Each branch of banks here seem to have a lot of leeway in regard to who may be eligible to open an account. So if one branch of a bank refuses it doesn't mean that all the branches will.

Suddenly 3 new pizza places have appeared on Pattaya Klang. Two are across from Carrefour, with one also offering seafood. I'm not sure these two are open yet. The third is on the N. side of the road E. of Soi 14.

I thought the project went up rather rapidly It was the site of the Siam Intercontinental Hotel and that wasn't demolished until Oct. 2002.

Just out of curiosity..........does anyone have experience..........?
If the situation had been discussed with Immigration in Thailand before leaving the country, how flexible are they in doing the renewal drill several weeks (month?) ahead of time?
(Doesn't help PTE, unfortunately.)
Jim, there are a couple of reports on another board from guys who received early extensions of O-A visas. One in Bangkok and the other in Pattaya. One guy needed surgery in the US. Needed to show airline tickets, a letter stating reason for request and all the usual paperwork for the extension. They were able to do this 2+ months prior to their permitted to stay date and got an extension of 365 days in addition to the 2+ months.

but only on a temporary basis as some services may have to be transferred from Suvarnabhumi if the airport became too overcrowded.
like maejo man , that was my reaction when reading this.
its not even open yet and they are talking about overcapacity.
havent they designed in some slack to cope with extra demand in the worlds largest airport.
what an amazing statement to make. surely he cant have meant it.
As I understand it, the completion date of the new airport is only the completion date of the first phase which will allow a capacity not so much greater than that of Don Muang. Additional phases, which as I recall were given a completion date of 2010, would add greatly to the capacity. If that is the case, then it's entirely possible for Suwanna to become "overcrowded" before additional phases are completed.

Here's a thread from 2003 where the 2nd poster indicates he received his income letter from the British Consulate in CM.
The poster states:
"I took out a retirement visa last july at CM immigration.
800,000 B in the bank or 65,000 B per month was requirement.
i have a pension fom Uk gov and obtained from brit consulate a statement to that effect. i was allowed to discount this from the 800,000 b bank holding."

Though he speaks a little English you'll need a Thai speaker to make arrangements. I've used him once and a friend a couple of times with reasonable results. Open truck so check weather report
(This is the same guy I PM'd you about in June, but you'd already moved from Bangkok.)

Majestic Condo
in Real Estate, Housing, House and Land Ownership
Posted
A friend just looked at a couple of 28sqm. studio units in the Majestic. They were newly refurbished and unoccupied since the redo. Priced in the range of 7XX,000 and 8XX,000. Sorry I can't remember the exact prices, but he said he wouldn't pay more than 650,000 baht for them. I mentioned the unit you looked at and said he'd think 1.2-1.25million would be about right.
