  1. Coarse or not, they ask you what you would like on your sandwich and many things are NOT extra charge.
  2. Without saying this happened this instance, in some shops Subway or others, the sandwich maker will say: "Would you like guacamole on that?" And you say SURE without it being said that the guacamole is extra charge.
  3. No. He held ambassador positions in both the GW Bush and first Trump administrations.
  4. Just heard from my friend of 50+ years in Laurel Canyon that she is OK -- only one evacuation -- but friends of hers have been wiped out.
  5. This is the one of personal interest to me -- looking better: Sunset fire 100% contained, evacuation orders lifted in Hollywood Jan. 9, 2025 Updated 10:46 PM PT Los Angeles firefighters reached 100% containment on the Sunset fire Thursday, which had triggered mandatory evacuation orders and massive traffic jams in Hollywood and the Hollywood Hills late Wednesday. “It’s a miracle that no homes burned here,” one firefighter told The Times on Wednesday evening. Hours earlier, the flames had approached the mansions that line North Curson Avenue. By 10:30 p.m., flames were barely visible on the distant hillside. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-01-09/firefighters-make-big-gains-battling-sunset-fire-which-forced-evacuations-in-hollywood
  6. Chief Justice Roberts and AJ Barrett denying the Trump request.
  7. And you don't have to rename Lake Superior because, to Trump, he already is.
  8. They are doing the same in Florida.
  9. I attended a meet & greet with the US Ambassador last August and he said that embassy officials are definitely engaged in discussions with Thai Revenue on the matter. But he said that was all he could say at the time.
  10. Hong Kong based Hutchison Whampoa, which has been in the port management business since 1863, operates the Panama Canal container port. Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) operates across Europe, the Americas, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. It operates in five of the seven busiest container ports in the world, handling 13% of the world's container traffic. Hutchison Whampoa operates container terminals in Panama, as well as Mexico and other parts of the Americas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hutchison_Whampoa
  11. I am a paid subscriber. There is always the non-paywall archive version if I'm willing to make the effort which these days I don't.
  12. I read the Hanson link in the OP. Less than 140-character summary: Trump et al were not the threat to democracy; those who opposed were the threat to democracy.
  13. ... and should anyone suggest that the President-Elect spoke anything inappropriate, there is the general-purpose response: That's just Trump-being-Trump
  14. If "some folks" were prevented from starting topics with a link to the NY Post or Fox News 'twould go a long way to the above. NB I stopped starting posts with the NY Times because the first reply was most always NYTimes? NYTIMES??? what about Hunter's laptop, HUH?
  15. From the Slate link above: If Trump asks, there’s a good chance that an appeals court, and maybe even the United States Supreme Court, will delay the sentencing, effectively until after his presidency. To begin with, Merchan had months and months to decide to sentence Trump. By waiting until the last minute, he’s putting all the courts in a bind.
  16. From the generally left-leaning Rick Hasen: Merchan’s concern for the rule of law and his condemnation of Trump’s attack on the judiciary are well stated. But his timing puts higher courts in an impossible bind and his ruling is not likely to be well received by a Supreme Court especially protective of presidential power. 17. WASHINGTON/NEW YORK Jan 8 (Reuters) - President-elect Donald Trump has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to prevent a New York state court from sentencing him for his conviction on criminal charges stemming from hush money paid to a porn star. "This court should enter an immediate stay of further proceedings in the New York trial court to prevent grave injustice and harm to the institution of the presidency and the operations of the federal government," his lawyers wrote in a filing made public on Wednesday. On Tuesday, a New York appeals court denied his effort to halt sentencing scheduled for Friday in New York state court in Manhattan. In Wednesday's filing, his lawyers asked the U.S. Supreme Court to immediately order a stay in the case, as he seeks an appeal to resolve questions of presidential immunity. They said they had simultaneously asked the state's highest court for the same emergency relief. https://www.reuters.com/legal/trump-asks-us-supreme-court-pause-new-york-hush-money-case-2025-01-08/
  18. There was no better training for that than in the Twitter old days when you could post only a maximum 140 characters.
  19. Dolly Parton has been married to her husband for almost 60 years. Why did she marry him? Dolly was "surprised and delighted" that this tall, handsome man looked at her face when they were talking—"a rare thing for me," she said—and "seemed to be genuinely interested in finding out who I was and what I was about." https://www.countryliving.com/life/entertainment/a43321/dolly-parton-carl-dean-love-story/
  20. You got your conspiracies -- I got mine. Before I never heard of Hanson -- but I knew about Selma.
  21. Conspiracies? Maybe he meant the RAISIN conspiracy. Hanson is from Selma, CA where his family has owned a farm/ranch since the late 1800's. With 90 percent of U.S. raisins produced within eight miles of Selma, the city adopted the slogan “Raisin Capital of the World” in 1963. * The conspiracy involves the agricultural marketing order whereby grape/raisin farmers are required to keep a bumper raisin crop off the market to stabilize prices. It went all the way to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ruled in 2015 that a government program dating to the Great Depression meant to increase in raisin prices by keeping some of them off the market amounted to an unconstitutional taking of private property by the government. 22. I just posted that to show that a lot of his current rhetoric has been in place a long time and is nothing new for him.
  23. As of now, the bigger constraint on the Trump agenda will likely not be from the Democrats but from the extreme right Republicans in the House and 3+ RINO's in the Senate some of whom voted for Trump's Senate impeachment conviction in 2023
