  1. Per the topic: Western Liberals: How Do You Justify Your Stay in Thailand? Justify to whom? There are people in the US with whom I eventually came to have so little contact they maybe don't even know that I am gone after 20 years.
  2. My standard line: You don't find a Thai romantic partner; they find you.
  3. Fine. I just hope the 'Panza Naranja' (from NYTimes) is not elected again so he can throw out the 2 federal charges.
  4. Good for you. You also said: He’s not going to be President. I hope you are right but I would NOT take that as any certainty right now. Even if Judge Merchan orders prison time -- which would not be under the standing NY State sentencing guidelines * for NY State non-violent E felonies first time offenders ---- Trump would not go to jail while appeals are pending. He might be on OR or, in his case, SSR (Secret Service recognizance) * https://ypdcrime.com/penal.law/felony_sentences.php
  5. So I will go out on the proverbial limb here: Sentencing by Judge Merchan is scheduled for July 11. Trump team must wait until then to file a notice of appeal within 30 days. Then they would have 6 months to file their initial brief with the first level (of 2) NY State appeals courts. 6 months from then will be after the election. My guess (and I have not read this elsewhere) will be that they will file a brief well before the election and make sure that their narrative and basis for appeal is widely circulated and maybe even nudge (irritate?) team Bragg why do they not respond well before the NOV 5 election.
  6. At least according to Elie Honig on CNN, the reason Todd Blanche was allowed in the pre-sentencing ZOOM is that Trump has 3 other criminal trials in process and anything said at the NY State felony pre-sentencing might be allowed as evidence in those other 3 trials.
  7. The Mikado sang "To let the punishment fit the crime" In this case, it may be on appeal, did the charges fit the crime as prosecuted. And much of the eventual appeal will deal with Judge Merchan's rulings before the the actual trial even started.
  8. Do you have any stock prices for November? Eh Tu? Starting at https://aseannow.com/topic/1304591-trump-surrenders-for-historic-fourth-arrest/?do=findComment&comment=18301546 JM So seeing justice is done means he is convicted. OK. The damage the guy could do in the US and world even on a daily basis is more than I care to contemplate. CH Trump is damaging democracy right now. He’s continually attacking Democracy and the institutions of Democracy. He’s already convinced millions of Americans that Justice is corrupt, he’s holding the torch for despots and tyrants the world over. On the upside he’s destroying the GOP. JM Great. so think what more he could do as President. CH He’s not going to be President. He’s headed to prison.
  9. Trump has no prior criminal record, and while that's often the case with white-collar defendants, the lack of a rap sheet could help Trump avoid jail time. Even if Trump doesn’t avoid a jail sentence, Trump’s seemingly endless stamina for legal appeals, coupled with New York’s bail laws, could keep him free while the appellate process plays out. Due to New York’s bail laws, it is almost certain that Donald Trump will remain free on bail pending appeal while all of his various appeals go through various courts. The idea that if Merchan sends him to jail, he’s going to spend the Republican National Convention behind bars is not plausible.
  10. And sometimes people don't spend sufficient time reading the application.
  11. New York State Law Penal Law Consolidated Laws of New York's Penal code Offense: E Non-Violent Felony: Sentence: No Jail, Probation, 1 1/3 to 4 years The following felony class chart is a general sentence classification it does not account for prior criminal history. One with prior felony convictions are treated with an increased minimum and maximum sentence. This is general information only and should be considered a ROUGH GUIDE. *** READERS SHOULD CONSULT WITH A QUALIFIED ATTORNEY. *** https://ypdcrime.com/penal.law/felony_sentences.php
  12. They also ask on the application: MEDICAL PREEXISTING CONDITIONS (IF ANY): past or present sickness, past surgery, medicine taken
  13. Life I'm not sure what there is to be careful about. At least from WrLife application form: DID YOU HAVE A PREVIOUS COVER (NOT TRAVEL COVER) IF YES, PLEASE SEND US THE INSURANCE CERTIFICATE:
  14. Having a 20 year claims history -- or no claims history -- with a Thai insurer helps when switching to a new cover.
  15. The old saying goes, "you can fool some people some of the time...." Well OK I was fooled in voting for Hillary '16 and then Joe '20 but I won't get fooled this time 'cause -- for the first time since 1972 -- I will not be registered to vote in a Presidential election. NB I voted for Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Florida primary.
  16. Well that's the rub -- being a convicted felon and being POTUS are not mutually exclusive. I hope Trump is not elected again but I wonder at times whether all this convicted felon mantra stuff hurts or helps him. I may try to find it again but there was one Politico (?) reporter who has been traveling around the country since the verdict and he said that, other than the WDC Beltway and NYC, not many people are paying close attention to the 34 conviction doings. Note: '34' is going to go down in the numbers icons like Heinz 57 varieties or Baskin-Robbins 31 flavors
  17. Maybe he will just get probation and community service to which he can ask: Does serving as President count?
  18. Only glad to oblige Yes and I have posted that because on several occasions you have suggested that -- based upon my analysis of Trump's legal positions especially on this criminal case that is also supported by multiple left leaning legal scholars -- I am not sufficiently anti-Trump to be genuinely anti-Trump. But asking you who you have voted for is almost like asking most girls if you can look up their dress.
  19. Maybe you did, maybe you did not. It’s one of those things that can never be proven. And for good reason is kept confidential. Thanks. I just wanted the folks on here to see your oft repeated standard answer.
  20. That's Ok. I voted against Trump for President twice. Who did you vote for?
  21. As with the old spiritual: Keep your eyes on the Prize. To me, the prize is that Trump is not again elected President. His felony conviction, for whatever charge, likely does not help him. Widespread gloating over his felony conviction, maybe does.
  22. May he said to him/her: You can't win, (insert name). If you strike me down I will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine. (thanks ObiWan)
  23. If being a felon convicted by a jury of his peers or FeConJuPee prevents Trump from being elected President Nov 5, 2024 then that's fine with me. My only concern is that it might have the opposite effect.
  24. The most disquieting facet of this case is that it did not pertain to: anything Trump did as president, nor anything Trump did during his current run for office, nor anything Trump did in the macabre transition process four years ago. It involved his actions nearly 10 years ago, in relation to the concealment of an alleged crime for which other prosecutors declined to ever charge the former president. https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/05/31/trump-trial-verdict-conviction-consequences-00160933
