Or how much money do I need to retire in LOS?
-
Bottom line, this site is moderated. If you are not pleased with that, you are welcome to seek life elsewhere. No one makes you stay.
-
You make my point with your reply. You just don't understand the difficulty of monitoring a basically anonymous site, trying to keep things in check without appearing too heavy handed. I suggest you find a forum where you can be a mod for a while then get back to us.
-
The problem with moderating a site is walking the tightrope of too much or not enough censorship. I took a visit to 4chan.org a few years ago (I think it's morphed into 8chan and possibly others since then). 4chan is a series of wholly anonymous, anything-goes forums. The wild wild west of the internet. It was HORRIBLE. No cogent arguments, threads went crazily in all directions, it really was a nightmare. As I previously posted on this topic, I personally think moderation in the past here was far too restrictive, forcing members to other venues. The fact we can even discuss mods now is evidence of relaxed scrutiny. In the past, this would have been met with having the post pulled and a 3-day or more suspension. That old saying "until you've walked a mile in their shoes" rings true here. I did just that at another forum and left with a new appreciation for the task. You will never please all members, just can't be done.

Not at all, I gotcha. grumpy old men. Examples of why people are leaving for less whinging platforms.

In my not-so-humble opinion, there were a lot of heavy handed beach timeouts that soured people on ThaiVisa. They then migrated to the kitty forum until that forum went a similar route. I was a mod on kitty and saw the members transitioning to kitty, then the forum morph into a more heavily censored platform at which time I said, "buh bye." As someone previously posted, the new members on AseanNow make constructive conversation near impossible and it's just not worth the bother any more.

Safety for solo travellers in the Philippines
HappyExpat57 replied to coralia's topic in Philippines General Chat
It's as safe as any other destination in the world as long as you don't do the things you mentioned you don't do already. -
I always recommend Jomtien. Plenty of affordable condos close to or on the beach, near enough to Pattaya to venture when you get an itch, far away enough to keep the worst mongers at bay.

Jomtien Immigration
HappyExpat57 replied to Hitcho56's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
I really appreciate the efforts from Jomtien immigration. I also enjoy the exclusive attention I now get from Chanthaburi immigration since moving here. I think I am one of 3 or 4 farangs in Chanthaburi and am always the only person in the office seeking service (including Thai customers!). -
I bought a Honda Wave 125 about 6 years ago in Pattaya. I've since moved to Chanthaburi and registered as living there with immigration. Chanthaburi IO does not offer a certificate of residence for anything, they just don't do it. What is the process to transfer the title to a friend who is registered in Pattaya?

need advice on dealing with problem neighbour
HappyExpat57 replied to farangbkk123's topic in Bangkok
This topic again . . . You have 3 choices: 1. Change the situation. Not likely to happen. 2. Adapt to the situation. Ear plugs, etc. Also not likely to happen. 3. Leave the situation. Best option. If you are the owner then sell. Even if you take a loss, your mental health requires you to vacate. -

Thailand starts trials of D11A rocket launcher

No one wants to go to war with Thailand, it's not worth it. Just a complete boondoggle. -

How to become a Samuian (Girl version)
HappyExpat57 replied to slabejmarek's topic in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao
"A Island Girl" Lots of credibility here. -
Two of my classes have been reduced to less than half the normal attendance due to Covid. The school is quite thorough about bi-monthly checks, and a positive test results in having the students stay home for a week. No serious illnesses have occurred, everyone comes back after quarantine. I have no control whether or not the masks are to be worn in the classroom, and easily 30% of students in every class don't wear masks. 95% of the general population (Chanthaburi) still wear masks and the last time I went in to get a haircut, the people nearly sh!t themselves scrambling to find the hand sanitizer for this dirty farang. The government can relax the rules all they want, the superstition still lingers heavily in the air here.

Thailand’s currency weakens to 38 baht per US dollar
HappyExpat57 replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I am admittedly completely ignorant about the exchange rates. I thought the dollar and baht were loosely linked against most other currencies. Can someone enlighten me? -
Typically electronics are never a good buy at Costco/Makro or anything like them.

Will the gentle approach rid Thailand of its drug problem?
HappyExpat57 replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Fighting the war on drugs will NEVER be won. Decriminalize it, standardize it, and tax it. Countries which have done that are the real winners. -
Makro isn't an evil empire. I usually drop by once or twice a month for the bulk stuff - uncooked oats, large Skippy peanut butter, chocolate chips, and I enjoy their #1 coffee. Most other things are slightly less expensive at Tesco/Big C.
