Constitutional Definition of Treason Under Article III, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution, treason is defined very narrowly: “Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.” This means: Levying war: Directly engaging in or organizing armed conflict against the U.S. Adhering to enemies: Supporting a nation or group the U.S. is actively at war with, by providing aid and comfort.
