Pattaya visa scam leaves hundreds of tourists out of pocket and overstaying
You're aggravated because you can't do it, or are afraid to try because you might make a mistake. I had a neighbor who kept paying someone to do his laundry. The truth was that he did not like doing it because he did not know how. There was also an ego issue, he felt like it was beneath him to do his own laundry. I used to hang up my laundry in the garden to dry, something I enjoy doing, and he got pissed off and complained to the landlord. He did not even want to someone else doing it themselves.

Jomtien culture compared
Especially when there's nobody else around 🤣. Just move to Bangkok. Easy solution. It's loud and dirty, but that's why people are dating and pairing up, so they can move out of the city and afford to buy a house in a nice clean area together and not be lonely. 🤷🏻♂️. Great incentive.

I would actually choose Bangkok if you're in your 30's and dating in Thailand. You would want to be in a city where's there's a lot of relatively normal people around. The problem with rural locations in the Usa is that most singles move to the cities. If there are any left there's usually crazy competition for them by the locals or they are already paired up. Not so in Thailand, but they would probably not speak much English and it would feel too weird living out there. I would just do Bangkok and date there. If you have an elite visa the cost is probably not an issue for Bangkok.

Jomtien culture compared
The whole country seems a little sketchy for serious long term relationships in my opinion. Not because of the exact area, but just because people interested in that don't really seem open to foreigners much. My recommendation would actually be Vietnam, especially in your 30's. I loved Hanoi when I lived there. People want to speak English. A sea of eligible beautiful women everywhere you go. There is a visa problem though 🤷🏻♂️, but you can do it if you're young and the english teaching schools hire you. I did not see the money issue in Vietnam like I do in Thailand or the Phillippines. If you have to be in Thailand I would recommend Chiang Mai & Chiang Rai.

Avoid the area in my opinion for that, including Jomtein. Your going to end up with people that are sleeping around with multiple partners and/or need money and wasting what time you have dealing with it. Restaurants, hospitals and cheap condo's are everywhere. No reason for you to be in Pattaya. Try Hua Hin. Good luck finding someone decent.

Drunk British suspect refuses arrest and tries to injure Thai police
That guy has a lot of british pounds (sorry, I mean pounds). 🤣
-
Do you ever get any negativity from the locals when you attempt to speak Thai?
Not really, I just bring my own menu to most places now 🤣.

A good mocking first, then comes the arrest afterwards.

Is my landlord extorting me on filing a TM 30?
Definately agree. Who knows what's going on behind the scenes. The lady the Op is talking to may not even be the owner, thus why she won't provide the documents. You never know!

I recovered 2000 THB, but still miss....
You're a man. Lost a few baht. Your dog is taking the piss. If he has another leg up, I don't want to feel it.

how many of them actually like BKK?
Simp. A man & his dog. If he has another leg up I don't want to see it.

The main people that I felt were happy there were the chinese-thai in the chinatown area where the shopkeeping was done for generations, or a way of life, rather then just work. In fact, that's the area I would like to live in if I ever went back. They have their own little insulated world in a strange way that I think protects them from the usual hassles and irritations most people would experience in bangkok. They are good at associating with only people in that circle. Everyone else kind of seemed stuck there just for economic or employment reasons. There were a handful of retired expats that lived there long term, but they did not really seem happy to me. It felt like there were just there for lack of reason or drive to go anywhere else. At least that's what I felt when I lived there, without bluntly asking people if they were happy 🤣.

Quiet, affordable places to live near Pattaya?
If your dog has another leg up, I don't see it. Many more expats around though.

The units in the Nirun Tower building facing the sea actually have great sea/city lights views if you're on an upper floor, especially at night. Many are newly renovated. You can't be too picky with a 10k budget if you want a view. If you like older buildings it's an option. I did have some problems with the water pressure so check that. I just ignored the building and area, you're getting that funk at most places in Central when you exit out anyway. I wonder why the Op wants to be near Pattaya, I would think Hua Hin or Chaing Rai were better options.

I have nothing but time. Retired and not working. I'm also never in a rush.

Learn to do things yourself. Don't use an agent for anything here. It's just blokes off the street doing things you could do on your own.

What are most Russians doing here and how are they financing themselves?
Most people aren't really "doing" anything. They just wake up, eat, piddle around and hang out in bars or on the beach. Some people said on here they like golf.

What do you think the impact of tax on foreign income will be on Pattaya?
Does it look like I care about money when drinks are on the house?

How long have you been in Chiang Mai? Better or worse since 2016? Considering going back.
