Thailand, where standing up for human rights gets you a prison sentence.

"No foreigner should think they have power above Thai sovereignty."

What about Thai power over Thai sovereignty? Don't they even care that the sovereign Thai Law, which forbids the alleged abuses, may have been broken? What this statement means to me: "Foreigners and workers don't have rights, influential Thais can do what they want regardless of the law. *cite countless cases of DWI vehicular manslaughter.

And people wonder why foreign investment and human rights/trafficking ranking are so bad? Wake Up!

It's ignorance again, but to be expected I guess.

Any perceived "attack" against any Thai or Thai business, seems to automatically then be associated (in their tiny little minds) as an attack against the monarchy and Thailand itself, despite the fact that it's they themselves breaking their own laws or agreements that they signed up to. No wonder investments etc have plummeted here, and they won't be going back up any time soon either if they carry on as they are.

I had hoped things would improve here, but they just seem to be sliding backwards into even more extreme nationailistic fervor every day, whilst simultaneously blaming everyone else for everything as they are so perfect and never do wrong or break their own < deleted > laws.

The "current crop" have always been at the very top. Any "crop", before them were just their subordinates.

No, that's not correct, there's been a power shift at the (very) top which you'll see the results of very soon, and there's been a power shift away from the Police and to the Military further down and on the street (not entirely, but it's going that way).

  3. The original off-topic post you removed stated in black and white ALL the specific treaties/conventions that Thailand is continually violating and ignoring so I would think that is very relevant to any discussion on "freedoms" here of any and all types.

Why are these international bodies allowing this to continue with no consequences?

Why are they allowing Thailand to remain a member of the UN despite ignoring the treaties they have signed up to?

  4. So, let me get this straight ... in order to increase investment and promote Thailand as a place to do business, they are proposing to change the law to allow "one" foreigner to register a business with no partners. But then later they've added that a "foreigner" is excluded from this relaxation of the rules.

So what's the point? Thai's can already start a business on their own without partners. So who's the law targeted at?

It's targeted at Thai people who now do not have to have a set quota of shareholders, simple as that.

I thought they could already do this in that case, I know quite a few Thai's who are the sole owners of their businesses. So is it then for a specific type of business? Limited company? Something else?

  7. I'm guessing those cars are stuck there for one reason and one reason only ... the importers had a deal with customs to get them through at "a lot less" than that 328% (weird number) import tax, but with the Army looking over their shoulders, the pastry tray couldn't be handed over to Customs, hence they are stuck there until one of the Army or Customs boys fancies a nice new hi-so car, pre-allocated before the "auction".

Or, all the importers have gone broke and they simply can't afford the taxes anymore. Nor can their customers. Sounds likely.

  8. Anyone else noticed a massive increase in the use of the term "mentally unstable" (or similar phrases) here in the last 18+ months when describing suspects?

Seems like everyone and his dog is mentally unstable nowadays when it comes to breaking the law, and I don't remember this being the case prior to 18 months or so ago.

  9. Maybe the Chinese sub IS OK, but to purchase would be idiotic. The gulf waters are too shallow for starters, but if they were not the use is for ?????. We have to assume that it will be operational as fit for combat ?? if so who is the enemy, what nation are they ?? It will near sit on the sea bed and use its periscope in the gulf--------just ridiculous when you have crippled old and young not being cared for. DOH

So Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnams submarine fleets must be as idotic then ?...what about patrols on the Andaman sea then ?

Actually during WWII the German U boats only had a safe oprating depth of around 90m, the Gulf of Thailand is around 60-75m water depth..and one could argue u boats did some very sucessful operations..

As regards the criplled old and young not being cared for could one not make the same remarks about the US/UK etc ?

With todays detection technology, those U boats would not last more than a few days if that.

Considering the depth of water in the Gulf of Thailand is no more than 85 metres, and the average is only 59 metres, there's gonna be no problems finding them whatsoever. Their biggest problem is gonna be getting caught in fishing boat nets.

  10. Why the need for a sub....?

"face" ... Army gets their new tanks and things, Navy gets their subs to tie up at the dock and watch them rust away.

They can recoup some money by charging admission to have photos taken in front of them. Certain senior military ranks will be free but foreigners not permitted because they'll be state secrets just like the aircraft carrier.

Ah, but you'll get to tour them free on Children's Day in January, or at least send in your nipper to note down the Chinese commands plastered over every knob and button. Let's hope the naval ratings understand Chinese or they throw in a free manual in Thai.

Most of the top brass is (Thai) Chinese, so they'll be fine.

No actually most would say this is part of the buyout to keep the other branches of the military in line under the Army. In the past, some of those other groups joined the people and went against the army leaders who hijacked the elected government.

Are you implying this is some kind of "bribe" from the Army to the Navy to keep them in line? ;)

And who gets the brown envelopes tho, that's the bigger question ... Army or Navy?
