  1. So, let me get this straight ... in order to increase investment and promote Thailand as a place to do business, they are proposing to change the law to allow "one" foreigner to register a business with no partners. But then later they've added that a "foreigner" is excluded from this relaxation of the rules.

So what's the point? Thai's can already start a business on their own without partners. So who's the law targeted at?

  2. I'm guessing those cars are stuck there for one reason and one reason only ... the importers had a deal with customs to get them through at "a lot less" than that 328% (weird number) import tax, but with the Army looking over their shoulders, the pastry tray couldn't be handed over to Customs, hence they are stuck there until one of the Army or Customs boys fancies a nice new hi-so car, pre-allocated before the "auction".

Or, all the importers have gone broke and they simply can't afford the taxes anymore. Nor can their customers. Sounds likely.

  3. Anyone else noticed a massive increase in the use of the term "mentally unstable" (or similar phrases) here in the last 18+ months when describing suspects?

Seems like everyone and his dog is mentally unstable nowadays when it comes to breaking the law, and I don't remember this being the case prior to 18 months or so ago.

  4. Maybe the Chinese sub IS OK, but to purchase would be idiotic. The gulf waters are too shallow for starters, but if they were not the use is for ?????. We have to assume that it will be operational as fit for combat ?? if so who is the enemy, what nation are they ?? It will near sit on the sea bed and use its periscope in the gulf--------just ridiculous when you have crippled old and young not being cared for. DOH

So Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnams submarine fleets must be as idotic then ?...what about patrols on the Andaman sea then ?

Actually during WWII the German U boats only had a safe oprating depth of around 90m, the Gulf of Thailand is around 60-75m water depth..and one could argue u boats did some very sucessful operations..

As regards the criplled old and young not being cared for could one not make the same remarks about the US/UK etc ?

With todays detection technology, those U boats would not last more than a few days if that.

Considering the depth of water in the Gulf of Thailand is no more than 85 metres, and the average is only 59 metres, there's gonna be no problems finding them whatsoever. Their biggest problem is gonna be getting caught in fishing boat nets.

  5. Why the need for a sub....?

"face" ... Army gets their new tanks and things, Navy gets their subs to tie up at the dock and watch them rust away.

They can recoup some money by charging admission to have photos taken in front of them. Certain senior military ranks will be free but foreigners not permitted because they'll be state secrets just like the aircraft carrier.

Ah, but you'll get to tour them free on Children's Day in January, or at least send in your nipper to note down the Chinese commands plastered over every knob and button. Let's hope the naval ratings understand Chinese or they throw in a free manual in Thai.

Most of the top brass is (Thai) Chinese, so they'll be fine.

  6. Why the need for a sub....?

"face" ... Army gets their new tanks and things, Navy gets their subs to tie up at the dock and watch them rust away.

No actually most would say this is part of the buyout to keep the other branches of the military in line under the Army. In the past, some of those other groups joined the people and went against the army leaders who hijacked the elected government.

Are you implying this is some kind of "bribe" from the Army to the Navy to keep them in line? ;)

And who gets the brown envelopes tho, that's the bigger question ... Army or Navy?

  7. This story is a bit confusing to me, regarding the bribery attempt.

For endless years, the Thai police are famous for taking bribery

money. So now suddenly you are arrested for doing what the

police have demanded before? Guess they get to keep the

300,000 baht and divide it up.... Is there a Thai word for irony ?

    Somehow I doubt it..

The rules have changed a little since the Military took over and there is increased scrutiny on Police activities.

Now you shouldn't offer a bribe, rather you have to wait to be asked by them if you would like to pay a bribe.

Semantics, but it's a changing world.

  8. Referendum held, results known, "democracy" has spoken, let's get on with it then.

You know the other name for a "non-binding referendum"?

    Opinion poll.

If that were the case, Cameron would have carried out an opinion poll - not a referendum.

Miss Andry provided the correct definition of referendum "a general vote by the electorate on a single political question that has been referred to them for a direct decision".

Even Cameron is saying that it was a binding decision! There was never any implication that the referendum was actually just an opinion poll....

And yet, with the clear mandate from a 2% majority of the people (yes, that's sarcasm), Cameron won't pull the trigger. (Or can't pull the trigger?) Because neither a referendum nor a word from the PM is adequate in a representative democracy.

I'm not arguing the merits of the decision. It's the flawed process and false expectations- on both sides.

My belief? Cameron floated the "referendum" to put the issue to bed once and for all. Imagine his shock when his pollsters missed their forecast and it bit him in the ass.

Cameron miscalculated badly in calling the referendum without some additional "rules" in place, such as having a 75% voter turnout, and also needing a clear 60% majority. They weren't included though, so it's too late now to cry over spilt milk.

It's done and finished with, the referendum has been concluded, with the "majority" (however small) choosing to leave the EU.

It's now up to Parliament to vote to actually approve this mandate, trigger Article 50 and then start the negotiations. That's how "democracy" and "the law" work. Anything else will make a mockery of "democracy" in the UK and make the UK even more of a laughing stock around the world.

For those that voted without knowing what they were voting for, well, that's down to you. Your choice. If people can't be bothered to research and understand the implications of what they are voting on/for, then don't vote in the first place, or at the very least, don't complain later that you were lied to or misled. This is "politics", it's been around long enough for everyone to know how it works. Both sides made outrageously inaccurate statements (and many outright bald faced lies), but ALL voters had more than enough opportunity to research things independently and come to their own conclusions/decisions, without blindly accepting all that was said to them.

Cameron's resignation has given the Government a much needed 2 month breathing space at a complicated and emotional time. I also assume he doesn't want to oversee something he didn't agree with, another reason why he chose to resign.

  9. Is this Brexit on or off? All the effort went into a vote...but many are backtracking.

Not sure what the plan is....just reading the news, it looks like the whole thing is a mess.

Obviously, the EU is going to hold a grudge....so will Britain never be the same? If the vote for Brexit was popular, by vote....then how can they turn that back? If they do, seems like tremendous effort over nothing.

People are indeed trying to overturn the result, because they didn't get the result they wanted. Seems freedom and democracy only apply when you agree with them.

Look for every trick in the book to be used to try and derail the Brexit process.

The referendum was essentially an "opinion poll", so nothing actually happens about leaving the EU until such time as Article 50 is implemented, and that has to be done by a vote in Parliament (as I understand things), so nothing is set in stone.

What they should have done is included the "options" within this original referendum (which they didn't), setting out exactly what majority would allow a "leave" to be agreed upon and "how" that exit will happen and executed by whom. An agreement on the "terms" of that exit should have been made BEFORE any of this mess happened, and should have been included within the referendum, so that everyone knew exactly what was being voted on/for.

Right now, the handling of this whole "Brexit" debacle has made us the laughing stock of the world, and the comments and actions of (what I hope are) a few have forever tainted us as a racist (and stupid) country, so thanks for that.

Honestly, I'm at a loss for words (almost) about the lack of "thought" of some of the voters ... is it that hard to think ahead and see the consequences of a decision, or do people not think anymore and simply make decisions based on emotions and bullshit spoonfed to them by their (so called) "leaders"?

We have been branded racist thanks the the ENDLESS propaganda spewed out by the media and those unwilling to understand the real reason for the Brexit.

The people voted to leave because they want the people who govern them to be elected by them. Simple.

And please, calling someone stupid because you don't agree with their point of view is not an argument so just stop it.

The "stupid" comment was aimed squarely at those voters who did NOT understand what they were voting on/for, and did NOT understand the consequences of their choices, as evidenced by how many now publicly state they want another referendum to change their minds.

You can blame the media (and I do) for racism, but at the end of the day, it's down to individuals and their actions/choices, and there seem to be a number of individuals currently being very racist. It's too easy to blame the media or anyone else for a person's actions/choices, I prefer to blame the individual who actually made the choice to be a racist/xenophobe.

  11. Defamation laws are not that uncommon in developed nations.

Take for example the United Kingdom Defamation Act of 1952. It reads in part1 that defamation is

The publication of any false imputation concerning a person, or a member of his family, whether living or dead, by which (a) the reputation of that person is likely to be injured or (B) he is likely to be injured in his profession or trade or © other persons are likely to be induced to shun, avoid, ridicule or despise him.

Publication of defamatory matter can be by (a) spoken words or audible sound or (B) words intended to be read by sight or touch or © signs, signals, gestures or visible representations, and must be done to a person other than the person defamed.

An imputation means suggesting something bad or dishonest about someone.

Thus, Abbot appears would have a probable legal case by several interpretations. Since Thai government agencies operate under the auspices of PM Prayut, he might be considered a defendent. But then he has as Chief of the NCPO Article 44 to absolve the government of any impropieties. A Mexican Standoff.

    1 http://www.thenewsmanual.net/Manuals%20Volume%203/volume3_69.htm

The key word there is "false" ... saying something that is NOT true. If the case goes to Court in the UK and the truth was found to be false, damages would then be awarded.

In Thailand however, it doesn't matter whether it's actually true or not.

  12. Speaking on behalf of others again, the EU is happy with the fishing industry, then they get threatened with sanctions. The world is happy with thier human trafficking record and efforts but the tier remains the same and told to act. The world is happy with the Junta but it's still not recognised as a government.

If they make comments on behalf of others then back it up with some evidence or else the words mean about as much as a bargirl saying you're handsome and I love you and only you very much.

But it's Thailand, and when a poo yai speaks, you're not supposed to question anything, merely accept their words as truth and be happy.

The days when actions and consequences actually have to accompany spoken words are far, far away still.

  13. Arrest warrants issuedcheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

Come fly with me lets fly fly away.

Again authorities given wrong doers time to flee.

Why do Thai authorities give wrong doers warning???

I know you are unhappy living in this country and have a go at everything Thai when given the chance but please just stop and use your brain before posting rubbish like this.

Why? Cos he isn't a foreigner who's become more Thai than the Thai's and can see the laughable aspects of officialdom, religion and rule (or lack thereof) of law here?
