Thailand’s cannabis sector faces threat from recreational use ban
Wrwest replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Not my circus, not my monkeys but 43 billion baht economic interests? TIT, money talks ... no body walks. -
Here in Chiang Mai, I am usually waived through. Perhaps the officer recognized me as I am usually on the motorbike with my Thai wife and we always wear helmets. When I am pulled over at the traffic check point, I show my Thai License, the tax sticker is clearly visible. The officer, thanks me, gives me a smile and waves me on. Experiences vary.

Thaksin’s political resurrection starts with crucial Chiang Mai test

Not good timing for anyone to come to Chiang Mai. Especially an older man with heart issues. -
It is being covered in the USA as the House of Representatives just passed a Bill to demand that the company be sold to someone not tied to the CCP. There are arguments weighing out privacy concerns, control over gathering of personal data (a larger question than just this one company), “national security” concerns … and not a small amount of irony, in that there are several governments that have laws which would allow them access to private data. This latter point, usually but not always requiring some independent court action approval. It will be interesting for me to follow. Thing is with China, they are in the process of gathering huge amounts of data in order to give each individual a social rating … the result of which will be used for accessing government benefits … reasonable or just a control mechanism?

Agreed. Cheapest 1 hour price I have seen in Chiang Mai is 150 baht. Usual price 200 baht ... and up from there in the tourist areas.

What are my options?
Wrwest replied to Confuscious's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
I have been retired in Chiang Mai for going on 13 years but have always used an agency as they know any local immigration twists and turns and the personalities at Immigration. No issues with qualifications, only for ease. The last house I rented, I had a 3 years lease agreement. We stayed 5 years, never bothering to update the agreement ... it was never questioned by Immigration as the address remained the same and they already had the owners ID, etc. just passing on my experience as a thought ... maybe not need for TM30 update? -

Thai prime minister graces TIME cover, signaling business revival

Thanks for posting the web link to the article. I would not otherwise sought it out. I read the article and liked its balance. -
Nearsighted and glasses since 5th grade. Loner story, short. Recommend going to Rutnin Eye hospital, Asoke and Montri. All they do is eyes. 2017, had my natural lens replaced with prescription lens. Yeah ! Glasses only for reading, computer distance. Only issue now is that, as we age, the "floaters" appear.

I have not read through the comments. My first reaction, having lived in Thailand going on 13 years is that there is a substantial difference between western nations and Thailand as regards slander/libel law. In the west ... if I call someone a thief and they are, in fact a thief, the person cannot charge me with slander/ libel. Here if you state or print that a business or person has done something, even if true ... you can be sued for damages (yes, sometimes cited as loss of face). In my experience, I vote with my feet, never dealing with that business again and, in private, would warn folks off out of regard for others.

Why does cataract surgery require a hospital stay in Thailand?
Wrwest replied to Bangkok Barry's topic in Health and Medicine
2017 Rutnin Eye Hospital, Bangkok. First eye was done on a Monday. I was staying at a hotel a short walk from hospital so stayed there and returned Wednesday for the second eye. Again, walked back the same day to the hotel. Following day, back to Chiang Mai. -
I used Chiang Mai Removals 3 times for whole house moves here in Chiang Mai. All packed with lots of bubble wrap, boxes, padding in trucks, longest move about 12 Km. Nothing broken. Just my experience.

Obviously, he is not a student of history. Oh, Republicans can make a factual claim as to the Civil War Era but today’s Republican Party is not Lincoln’s Republican Party. And social change fought for by Republicans? This is why some folks do not want history taught, so they can try to convince you of their wishful thinking. Nope, not going to take my time to list the social advances fought against by Republicans …. But I will affirm as an Emeritus Professor of History.

Swiss national opts for jail after assaulting Thai woman in mall
Wrwest replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
My mind asked the question whether he might be thinking he would be safer in jail than risk Thai citizen retribution by vigilante action? -
With our current AQI readings, an oxygen bottle is recommended for all. Sad ... In good conscience, health wise, I could not recommend anyone visiting Chiang Mai currently.

British man quits England for Thailand’s tropical tranquility
Wrwest replied to webfact's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Yes, I had flashing lights appearing from the get go in coming to Thailand on a one way ticket … no doubt, we are not given the complete story. As written, I cannot understand how it would be possible. -
Agreed. A bit more, in the interest of full disclosure. Retirement included a policy which will pay up to $5K a year if outside the USA. I had a heart attack here in 2015, they paid the $5K and I had to eat the remaining $6K.
