I personally knew a girl who got a permanent residency in another country and could not leave Thailand unless the debt was paid off. In the end the husband had to foot the bill which was about half of the amount your wife owes (or maybe more with interest and penalties piled up).

There is no such thing as bankruptcy like in the West, If she is married the bank goes after you. If they don't go after you, they go after the family. She obviously does not want to burden her family with problems she created.

Just because you used to get refunds in the past does not mean anything with companies like amazon. I remember 7-8 years ago I could order a heavy items from Amazon UK (I am talking 30kg or more) and they had a flat shipping of 4.95 pounds (no duties). Of course they were losing money. I made so much money reselling their product in Thailand. Now they charge 300-400 pounds to ship the same item.... plus, of course, customs duties which run in the hundreds.

My country raised interest rates. Naturally the savings rates also went up. As a matter of fact back home (where interest rates are still low) I can now get almost 5% on a 1-year deposit. Depositing 500,000 bucks would allow me to live like a medium tier Cheap Charlie in Thailand without touching a principal. I think Thailand interest rates are higher, but they seem to be paying next to nothing on term deposits. Am I correct or am I looking at the wrong places?

I predict they are going to either go out of business or have to adjust to a local market. A lot of Thais came with fancy cars and were leaving with noodles and coke. Prices are exactly the same as their tops stores which completely negates the point of having a CLUB store. What Thai person is going to pay a membership fee to get a 5% discount? Most of their "imported" non frozen items are on Lazada 30% cheaper. Thais are not stupid shoppers especially now that they are squeezed for money. The foreign management yesterday was completely clueless as to how to adjust to Thai market. I heard them the way they talk to a Thai staff. FAIL
