  1. I don't really understand the point of this thread. You bought some crappy lighters? Don't do it again. The Toto brand that I have bought for years for 5 Baht work fine. Make sure you adjust the valve on the front to - not + and then burn off a bit of the extra gas pressure and they work fine. I even have a sterling silver case they fit in that I've had for at least 15 years. Looks like a silver Bic lighter.

I guess the point was to raise a few smiles and get a fun thread started. I guess I didn't do a very good job of it though...

5555 swat 'appens when you caste your 20bt pearls before swine.

..Where can I find book matches in ....?

Is my disposable lighter 24kt case I bought in a 50bt shop real?

Should I have my refillable disposable lighter repaired ( the little LED flashlight don't work no more) or should I buy a new one?...

  2. 5555 have same issue with ours.the red light of death...will work by repeated power on off..then tons of ghosting...gotta buy a new one soon..cheap as chips now compared with a few years back..

Think it is the power supply as well as screen on our case..even .if you get yours fixed, don't expect any recourse if it fails again after a short while........buy a new one mate.smile.png

We're on our second LG flatscreen in three years. The first one lasted two weeks (until the screen died) and so had it replaced. The 'new' one now green-screens all the time and has to be powered on and off up to five times before the picture will appear.

I am convinced it something to do with PEA supply, ants and gecko poop...smile.png

  3. we have NEX 200 androids....4700bt I think.

Fricking amazing...like you am a laptop guy with mouse and whatnot..touch screen takes a bit of getting used to.

The NEX does everything you are looking for and then some. The instruction booklet is of no help at all though ..spent a lot of time fiddling to see how stuff works, find menus etc..probably stuff I still have not found.

I use mine for an e-reader exclusively..download PDFs onto lap top first though..never bothered with the SIM card. Should have bought he non sim card version with WIFI as it was about 3700bt.

Would buy the biggest unit you can for use as an e-reader...my 7 in is a bit of a strain after a couple of hours which is also about the limit of battery life. Have a USB extension cord on charger when at home reading.

Tried to find Thai language books ...very limited...could not find any free most priced almost as much as paper. ( reverted to second hand book stores )

Wife just uses hers as a coaster and a game toy now methinks.

Quite a few free English language e- book sites out there.

  5. ....most cases it is quite easy to make an educated guess at the posters origins etc...

    Some pointers:

Brits ..................................whinge about everything and are usually discussing their bowel movements and/or accessories

Ozzies ..............................take the piss out of everybody and everything especially the Brits and are really smart and eloquent

Scandinavians ..................real long posts which you can't understand

    French................................amazing sense of humour

Germans ...........................even more amazing sense of humour

Italians................................nah forget about them ,their mums have mustaches

Greeks...............................very hard to separate the men from the boys

Israelis................................they will have already told you on their first post......tend not to post on pig farming threads

Africans, and Asians ........ they are all already Brits,Ozzie,Canadian,American or wannabees..so forget about them

Canadians..........................mostly always apologizing and quite boring goody two shoes,PC type people , thought to have come from eating salmon and maple syrup at every meal.

Americans..........................all of the above ?..they still think Hitler was born in Australia ?

    Others................................do we really care?

  6. its the taboo against being critical thats going to set a child back here, esp if they migrate to a western country. it makes it difficult to learn how to solve problems in personal and professional life.

A non-issue in schools with western curriculum and western teachers.

do you go out for hamburgers afterwards and hide in a condo all night too?

You're not giving your hypothetical spawn much credit then are you, if you think that they'll revert to sheeple as soon as they as they step out of the condo.

I spent the first 16 years of my life living and being schooled in nowhere other than Thailand and I've yet to see the usual damning platitudes about what growing up in Thailand will do to children manifest themselves in any of my (international school) peers in the same caricature way that those platitudes are quite often bandied about, notwithstanding the prevailing behavioural politics in Thai culture at large and the worldwide distribution of common sense and character.

I have a couple of grown up kids who were educated in Canada and Australia now have three teenage Thai step kids...none are angels by any stretch but gotta believe that a child's development is mostly about their own strength of character/personalities coupled with a good deal of parental involvement.

Sure all kids are influenced by their classmates positively or negatively...want to be one of the guys etc and want experiment...don't mean they are all gonna be junkies or the class bike.

Whilst the education system here in Thailand has it's faults I notice that the teachers, be they Thai or foreign, are very quick to summon the wife whenever there is any problems.

Have a mate who took his 1/2 Thai son out of private school and is now in public school.....the child is much happier and his work has improved. He is also trilingual......

So one cannot generalize.... it is about the individual methinks.

Attended a Brit mixed grammar school a hundred years ago.....we were all such perfect individuals.....no violence,no sex, no booze, no drugs, no racism ( unless you were born outside Middlesex ) , no class bike...............right!??

  7. No....

Fantastic source of information , anything from actual facts to know all opinionated waffle.

Up to you to use as you see fit.

It is a great memory boost/aid too.....ie adding to/confirming what you think you already know?

Takes a bit of thought/logic to best format search for what you are after...though.. just a learning curve .

My opinion is that search engines and the internet are the greatest quantum leap in the use of technology since the advent of printing press.

  8. actually this a good thread..especially for us ancients..

wife was at some dead people party yesterday ..so

settled down with a bottle of cheap scotch ( raining) and dug out my old cd 6 packs ..Rock Box 1& 2, Country and Western favourites.etc

Have nearly all the songs in the videos ( which I cannot watch at 140kbs....). aaah the memories..brought a tear to my eye....lol

What a nice couple of hours!

  9. OP: 2,500 euros is roughly A$3100. A$3100 for travel for 2 people to the GBR from Thailand plus accommodation, dive fees, food etc for a week is not enough. Also you need to allow two days for return travel to Australia. Unless you can increase your budget rule our going to GBR

    555?

Thought it was his honeymoon? A few grand on his CC is probably not here or there..think many would consider a visit to GBR on life's agenda?

  10. Re Cairns and environs......Don't have a too much to add except that do drive around, lots of great almost deserted beaches..go up the sky ride to Atherton Tablelands and or drive the hair raising views road ...the drive up to Palm cove is a must also....do not expect clear blue waters on the mainland beaches if there has been any rain..runoff from sugar plantations makes it a bit murky...but you can go cane toad crunching on the roads ..lol

Check for blue stingers on mainland beaches..don't worry about the crocodiles on mainland beaches the sharks ate most of 'em.

Many beaches have picnic and free barbeque facilities/showers toilets, water not for drinking though....great way to spend a few hours

Green island is worth a trip but the now Jap resort is/was rather tacky..beaches on seaward side of island are nice though..worth the walk.

Some small operators (sail or power) are better than those mega cats if you don't want the crowds .......

Food in most pubs is excellent and reasonable also in the RSLs ..nice one in Palm cove..you just have to sign in. There is areal nice outside/inside restaurant at the Yorkies Knob marina ( just north of Cairns)good for Sunday brunch.

    Enjoy..the GBR is stunning...smile.png

  11. To any of you with chickens in the yang.A simple method that works to keep dogs at bay.Nail some wood crossways onto a branch and lean it up against a tree and chickens can hop up it into the tree.Put a few of these around your farm and chickens will find them and cut your losses down..Bush chickens are better than ducks and geese because they don't need to be fed, cutting costs.I just love ducks and geese though.smile.png

hm-mm a predilection for ducks and geese hey...thumbsup.gif

Since we are wandering off here........

Talking of geese..there are a few Canada geese that seem to live on a farm near us..wonder if they migrated...been there for years....think they are on overstay...

Since ducks and geese have the ability to fly you would think they would escape predators?..

Gotta admit never seen a duck or goose sitting in a tree though....

.SIL law has a big ( some Thai fruit) tree with highish canopy was very surprised to see chickens up there..

..I never even knew chickens could fly ........... fry?.

I love duck eggs even the pickled/salted ones.

  12. I voted for the sexy one that sent me their portrait.

Strange! Dorothy must have pm'd you, but doesn't seem to be on the list..... Youu've been pulled under false pretences....cheesy.gif

Seriously, I'm very worried about this voting malarky, Smokes. If, as seems likely one (or other) of the front runners isn't happy with the outcome, what then. Look what happened to the UK, with that unholy alliance. Are we going to see jt and tb in some dubious civil partnership? drunk.gif

    whistling.gif

They are both being a little bit cagey at the moment....only the occasional jab for now.

Wait till nearer the weekend....then hopefully we will see these heavyweight members battle it out no holds barred.

Aint no Queensbury rules here.....just be careful of the referee(s)!! wink.png

Queensbury rules should benefit unfairly JT right ?

...that would bugger the result for sure

  13. I can't get the old fashioned dripping to go with it.

Render a pig's head. Takes a good 12-14 hours but you get enough dripping (lard) for a year.

Ain't that head cheese?...yum..cholesterol city..what about using a rice cooker ...or maybe a slow cooker ...same same ???

Any one ever do pigs trotters ?....no idea what ya supposed to do/cook cook 'em... but old English basic staple methinks ...wiv pickled onions and Guinness maybe..mmmm?

Then there is the great cold weather food Oxtail stew..lots of lovely fat and potatoes ,onions and other root veggies etc....not sure tropical fare though.

..wife makes a pretty fair rib pork soup as she calls it.... not quite though

Lost my Brit Roses flour Co. cook book boxing day 2004..f...k!

  14. A letter from my spouse:

    Dearest husband:

First let me say I love you dearly, you have built me a beautiful house on my/our farm and you have made me a beautiful garden with my beloved orchids and your palms and bougainvillea etc.

You take care my children and my mamma and you can fix many things. I love you.

But. ....Can you please ask your Farang internet friends.....

Every time I cook your favourite curry with prawns pork and squid etc, I note that you inhale several bowls full with relish.

It is good to see and makes me happy.

However my love, as you know, we have a nice bedroom with a view and a very expensive imported duck down doona.

Can you please inquire of your knowledgeable farang internet friends...?

Why is it that the doona smells like a dead elephant? Often this smell is preceded by the sound of several large frogs being stepped-upon in the early hours of the morning?

    Is this a farang thing?

    Your loving wife.......

  15. Take up the toilet and see if the pipe is under the toilet opening, there should also be a wax ring seal sealing the pipe to the toilet.

Builders fail to take the tile thikness into concideration when installing the toilet soil pipe.

If the floor drain pipe goes to the septic tank directly it is usually easiest to put the P trap in the pipe at/before the tank.

If you need to put a vent in the tank remember to put a T fitting on the top of the pipe, it will help stop wind from going down the pipe in to the tank.

better yet Add a pipe about 30 cm long that has been filled with Charcoal, cheep is Ok aquarium grade, (not cooking charcoal) this can be fitted over the vent pipe it will absorbe 90% of the odor that comes from the vent pipe, use the aquarion fiber filter material in each end of the charcoal pipe, plastic misquito netting to keep in place at the bottom.

While P traps on sinks are certainly good to prevent smells, it is not so easy with shower drains due to access problems (ie in a slab) which would be a pain if you ever have a blockage ( just had to de-rice/veggies and hair etc from our our common grey water pipes using a shop vac).

Occasionally have drain smell in upstairs bathroom ( strangely never downstairs which is essentially slab) from shower drains ( no p traps or vents) .....usually throw down some bowl cleaner or bleach.

Since our grey water goes out direct ( no tank) downhill among the brush/trees , think that the wind somehow causes it or accumulated slime in the pipe?

As stated, flush toilets have a built in trap, access/installation of a trap is impractical in many cases...I installed two capped clean out points outside en route to the septic tank though.

Our plastic septic tank vent is actually horizontal next to overflow and about 50 metres long out away from house and seems to be effective. (initially had an ugly tall vertical but some odour pervaded our upstairs nevertheless)

It would be nice if one could have found radial curved joints and tees in smaller diameters like sewer and conduit?

The joints, I suspect, always leave a ridge of adhesive inside or a gap which must give a potential footing for accumulation of crap?

Someone mentioned wax toilet seals..could not find 'em here so brought 'em from overseas.

  16. It all depends what the origin of the sinus problem is?

If it is from a cold or infection the best way is the saline solution. Forget about antibiotics and steroids sprays they can cause other unwanted problems and are not necessary.

Further to this if you can swim in the ocean everyday for a week or two i guarantee your sinus problems will clear up.

Mega doses of good quality high potent garlic work well for sinus problems also horseradish.

Sinus problem can be from allergies too like especially dairy, wheat, and yeast.

I get painful sinus problems from drinking beer sometimes. In these cases you need to look your diet.

And sinus problems can be from environment like exposure to moulds etc

Agree 100%...convinced it is the farm environment... ie allergy to something ..pollen etc or maybe even fresh air...?smile.png

Often get, what I call a head full of mud and consequent slight giddiness... usually at night...antihistamines seem to work .

Had the beer problem too for about two years ...fricking terrible ache back of neck and ear/temple..would go away with nasal spray.(Otrivin) .not had it for a long while now though.

The bit about ocean air/swimming is certainly true..when we take a break on Phuket ...no issues not even the usual tinnitus!

Found that resort pools exacerbate it!

  17. It would appear that many of the posters here are not as old as yours truly!!! I say that because it my era the BSA Bantam was probably the most popular bike on the road, the Villiers 250cc two-stroke twin engine was used in such bikes as the Ambassador, Norman, Francis Barnett and I think a road version of the Greaves. The rivals were certainly the Ariel Arrow and its brother (can't remember the name now) and they were a little faster because they were designed for speed and I think the compression ratio was a little higher and perhaps had a shorter stroke???

The place to buy bikes was a company called Pride and Clarke in London and they advertised extensively.

In my time I had two different Ambassador twins, and at one time a Triumph 500 cc Speedtwin, and for me the two strokes won hands down. I agree with Elliss that they could be a bugger to start, however I found that they frequently had problems with the choke mechanism on the carburettor and when that was fixed, starting was pretty well two kicks on any morning.

Now here's a bit of nostalgia, in the early 60s, before I was eligible to get my licence, a couple of guys on the estate I lived on bought brand-new Hondas (CBR 250?? some of the first in the UK) and were proudly showing them off to all and sundry and I was absolutely amazed at these machines, ticking over silently, all nice and shiny, and very compact, whereas the guys driving the likes of the Triumphs, Matchless, AJS etc were looking on and stating that they were cheap Japanese sh@t and they wouldn't last.

As an onlooker I was able to see the irony in this because the guys on the UK built machines were sitting astride big clunkers, lots of timing chain rattle and just about everything else rattling, dripping oil all over the place and heavy to boot. Well those Hondas proved to be the downfall of the British motorcycle industry, and just a couple of years ago I was up in Phitsanulok when one of these Hondas appeared at a gas station and although it was a bit battered, it was still in good working order. so much for them not being able to last!!

As I recall, Norton did try and keep up with the new technology etc and introduced a 400 cc bike with electric start, which was a first for any UK bike. Lost track of things from there as decided to migrate from my trusty Ambassador after having a major accident when I hit a car, to a clapped out, rust ridden Mini, but that's another story!!

no idea how it happened but had an old Villiers .....engine..... I swapped for a billiard table????......had a plan to build a a bike for it...

.....but grew up and migrated to SA.before it came to fruition ..probably land fill now.

Yup Norton was THE bike ..rich Polish classmate had one .....jealous as hell!!! Hey but his one legged WW2 fighter pilot dad made great sausage....all forgiven..smile.png

okay on me fourth beer and just remembered the bag 'o nails on two wheels ...the Ariel...square 4?? or somesuch ???
