  1. Considering getting a Tera bit drive as a few friends have 'em with 100s of movies thereon and will transfer 'em for me...also would like to back up my ever slower laptop....

Anybody bought one or recommend which one to get...simpler the better methinks...friend says they are available for about 4-5 k baht in Phuket..

    Thanks for any assistance/thoughts here.

    cheers

    dad

  2. Just read another thread that indicated a land title can be changed by the owner from NS2 to Chanotte.... All the info I have gleaned in "the boonies" is that is the perogative of the land office when and if they feel inclined...most of this came from the local land office...admittely there was no incentive offered...but..

So any one know the true story on this...

The MIL just had the land office come and survey her farm land and convert it to Chanotte without request or tea money...??? apparently instantly more than tripling the value thereof!

  3. just have a quick look into the fuel tank with your lighter once you fill it up so you can see the color, for your peace of mind and everything else....

    :):D :D :D :D :D :D :D

...........brilliant!! .... a great way to see if your LPG tank is leaking or the fluid level in the battery too!!!

  4. Hi Guys: here is my penneth for what its worth....

We have a total of about 70 Rai of ruber trees, we purchased this in two lots...25 rai of mature and negleted trees ( not poorly tapped or abused but just not tapped). The rest was adjacent land with immature trees but well fertilsed but a bit overgrown. All ths was 4 years ago...

After several false starts ans buildinga house on the immature farm my wife is now tapping the 500 mature trees heled by varius rellies and local adjacent farmers when we need a break.

Current rubber prices are now yielding us in the region of 1200baht per day for dried in cup rubber....cutting three resting one ( the wife went to rubber school lol... and says this is okay). This is from the 25 rai where not all trees are even now not tappable. ( there is about 650 trees I guess).

The most work is collecting the f..g heavy rubber and marching with it over two clicks total lol. The other major work is hain someone ( FIL in this case ) brush cut the farm makes a big difference to wifes' safety from snakes etc.

Other issues of course includes fertilizing ( May..) and painting cut area with anti fungal when the trees get wet..then there is ants building mud up the trees and rainy season/leaf shed times when we cannot cut.

All up considering the investment for the harvestable trees we are getting in excess of 12%pa ROI so its is a viable business..the income pays all our bills including my beer, diesel and the miriad of need to take care family..demands...lol

Big learning curve but the whole of the wifes family are rubber farm owners...so that helps

good luck.... feel free to pm if needs must

  5. Deposited 10K for Ranger 3.0L DC 4x4 AT Wildtrac today, will be delivered in 1 week...

Got discount 20K+ free service plan 5yrs (18k)+free delivery, free 1 yrs insurance.

I will post about its perfomance later, for my location (NE,Yasothon) it was probably the best choice, can load things for fishing and dont brake wheels out of city as normal pasenger car.

+ I dont want to be another Toyota, Isuzu sheep :)

Looking at one myself they look "built tough" not prissy urban tractors! Have 2000 Fighter at present love it but not 4x4 and need one on the farm in the wet.. What pricing are we talking here... I looked up on the ford site and found the open cab at 749k is that about right or are there better deals to be had. What is the diff between wildtrack and the reg 4x4?? Seems a lot of decals and steps and stuff can't tell on the ford site??

    thx

  6. Translation anyone?

He came on holiday, met a Thai girl, fell in love, wanted to stay, had very little money, bought a cheap restaurant, business provides him only a Thai income, he wants a western income, has no money for a bigger business, now going home, has no job in UK, no money in UK, poor Thai girlfriend cast adrift as he cannot pay to get her to go with him.

Bottom line is not enough cash but wanted to live the dream.

    hahaha, so true

Plus I have heard restaurant owners say the same thing about people everywhere, thats what running a restaurant is like.

Yes true , my ex and I bought a coffee shop & restaurant in Vancouver Canada, great fun...NOT!!!..low margins , high fixed and variable expenses including very high rent......f..g hard work..seemingly high percentage of dirty, arrogant customers ...worst line of business I can imagine ...anyplace...although it was a great place to get a "street level" MBA!

...not surprised by the OPs' comments he should have bought a rice wholesales shop or maybe buy the GF a a motorcycle and sidecar vendor outfit to sell noodle soup....??

  7. Gee I wonder if my wifes uncle will get a pay raise. He is on the village payroll of the headman. :)

No but he may get to ride in his new truck :D .

:D :D :D so true...maybe he'll also put 100m of blacktop in front of his house to stop it getting dusty....lol See it all the time here in the sticks...morse code of dirt and blacktop..wife says its the orbitor "need new truck so not finish all road"..lol

  8. Red-shirt leaders to hold meeting on Jan 15

Red-shirt leaders will hold a meeting on January 15 to discuss strategies for campaigning to topple the Democrat Part-led government, one of them said Saturday.

Natthawut Saikua, a red-shirt leader, said leaders of the red-shirt movement would discuss strategies for holding a mass rally with goal to bring down the government.

The meeting would decide the venue and form of the rally.

Natthawut said the campaigns would be peaceful.

"It will be the biggest ever rally of the red-shirt people," Natthawut said.

When does the charge of treason enter the equation?

Exactly..I don't understand why ANYBODY who incites insurrection and social disorder/chaos to bring down a government should not be arrested and jailed deported or..if they tried that elsewhere in Asia suspect that there would be swift retribution.

  9. Thai mother in law won't have beef in the house but will eat it except on religious holidays.

I'm part vegetarian, only eat grass eating animals.

seems a lot of our ladies don't eat beef..my wife is actually allergic i guess and throws up if she eats it by mistake..as in a hotdog in Canada..poor old beach vendor was a little embarrassed as everybody looked on....her hot dog in hand barfed it up...

I have to cook it myself and she goes outside until I have finished and cleaned the pots etc...I even make spaghetti bol with pork now..'sokay by me!

  10. Try the lumin or whatever it's called, it's like a rock or something and you run water over it and then rub it into your pits. Works very well for me. No smell, good or bad, no sting and the rock lasts for months.

I think its some sort of washing 'Soda" I first bought it in a market stall in Cairns at about $4 a lump with a cord on it.

When I was in a market here in LOS I saw the same stuff available by the kilo..cheap as chips..been using ever since ..also works good as an antiseptic and sting and bite itch stopper highly effective!! Great stuff... bit sharp when you get it in lumps... I rub a file over a lump to round it off other wise will scratch your "pits"...

Oh I see from another post it's Alum..well that explains why it is so good for razor cuts etc..they also use alum as a a water clarifyer in swimming pools ( expensive too in Oz) and water supplies in LOS, I understand..marvelous...

  11. We often get "cut up" while driving and I always used to swear...now my "she who must be obeyed" has taken over..

"stupid baaastaard, boll....oks wanke_r you die soon" ..hilarious cure for road rage....

    couldn't find edit...

just remembered one time an erratically driven truck loaded with coconuts and perched on top was the monkey...I started to grin and the wife looks at me and says "what dear? you think wrong person driving yes!!"........amazingly astute lady!!!

  12. the green snake is venomous - and not scared of people (or at least the one I have encountered behing my house clearing the bush). The next time I venture there I first send dogs to scare all the wildlife

Did not seem to be scared of anything that little one!! We have five dogs... only two barked at it and it did not move... eventually just turned tail and slowly went off into the bush....if you mean the big tree snake..yes we were told yesterday.. pretty dangerous the village people and rellies told us!

  13. The WHOLE article:

Thaksin's five demands in exchange for peace: his legal adviser

    By The Nation

Ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra will not cease his political struggle unless his five demands are met, his legal adviser Noppadon Patama said on Tuesday.

"Thaksin wants to raise awareness on the lack of democracy and will fight along with those tens of millions of people suffering from injustice," Noppadon said alluding the alliance between Thaksin and the red shirts.

To bring about reconciliation, the Democrat-led government and the powers-that-be known as "amartya" must comply with the five demands, he said in reference to the Privy Council.

The five demands are the restoration of the suspended 1997 charter, the blanket amnesty to political offenders under the provisions of the 2007 Constitution, all rival camps to stop activities after the election outcome, the House dissolution and the honest and fair balloting.

Noppadol said the powers-that-be were trying to portray the red shirts as the trouble makers even though they were the real villains who stole power from the people.

  14. I am nearly crying with laughter at this thread...fantastic.. what is it about what i Arsume is mostly Brits and the bums and toilet discussions??

I remenber at home in uk as a kid ..even over xmas dinner the conversation always seem to come round to bums etc..never knew why...I "don't" think it was just my family...???

Here is my dinner time story.

..so I am in a bus station on in Thailand ( visa run)and had to go potty so off I "trot" and pay my 2 baht to be confronted with a smelly flooded "squat" ...so carefully undressing my lower half and hanging up, I balance precariously on the raised squat trying not to slip off in my bare feet.

So mission accomplished, I now reach for the stun gun hose and apply it from the rear. WELL! the front of of the squat is nicely angle "up" right?.. and the pressure from the 'gun" is about 2000 psi.SOOO..water hits bum and residue propels onto upward slope of bowl carrying on in beautiful arc straight into my down turned face!! Jesus H! Not happy about that facial!!... Moral...check your pressure before applying jet..

...my mother nearly died laughing when I told the table at a wedding in Canada...the Canadians were "not amused"..

I have a regulating "tap" on the bum washers in our house and always look "up" now..maybe should wear a welding mask too

  15. The bronzebacks are the most common snakes in our area. The golden tree snake is second.

One of the bronzebacks caught a rather large toad. The toad was too big to eat and the snake had of the toad's legs swallowed up to its body. They were that way for a long time so I finally rescued the toad. LOL!

Didn't want try a rescue that bloody Gheko was waking me up at night

  16. Lies:

This is one that has been getting under my skin more than usual lately, why is it that so many people out here can't tell the simple truth even when the truth is not necessarily a bad thing. I just appears to be instinctive.

Lying, thieving, immoral, nose-picking cheats! I will leave it up to you to decide who I am talking about.

... banks, lawyers, real state agents, governments, big business? LOL you forgot unethical...

  17. The problem is in Thailand there is too many Western misfits, people who could not make it in society back home so they try to become someone in Thailand (pretty younger girlfriend, have a social life etc) but then become disillusioned when life still doesn't work out for them...

..very interesting thread .. so whats different about Thailand ?.expect the same issues would arise anyplace..would not fancy being retired iand housebound in a snow storm though...

Misfits as you call 'em will always be just that..the rest of us kid/convince ourselves we are happy most of the time which is hopefully true. The post about boredom is the most accurate summary I feel.

One thing I have noticed since being in the tropics is the "f.. it I have lots of time to fix that or complete that attitude" I seem to have adopted..maybe I will just sit here look at the mountains and have beer first and think how lucky I am not to be where its cold , expensive etc.... a long way from the workaholic acquisitive westerner I once was... bored ? NO, just well errr... maybe just a touch more languid..like the environment.

Must admit often feel "guilty" about not "working" or doing something constructive..luckily it soon passes lol.

In the past I had viewed people from warmer climes as lazy or apathetic... now I know ....

gotta go find something else not to do now...
