  1. Why no surprise? Scottish beef "Aberdeen Angus" second (I would say best) in the world so a british steak dinner is no where! Then one of the nicest bits of beef I've had was American buffalo/bison while in Canada again no where to be seen. So many game foods readily available and nothing... mince and chilli wow......lol
  2. The minimum wage in Thailand is scandalous. When goods manufactured in Thailand cost more in Thailand than in the uk after export import says it all. Prices are not cheaper in Thailand infact often are more expensive so when people are paid £12 for a 12+ hour day compared to £12 an hour and contribution to a pension is not far off slave labour.
  3. And Thailand should pay war retribution's to the UK and their allies over WW2 or thank America for the pathetic excuse saving them billions.
  4. Sorry not everyone is a coward! Some people have principles.
  5. People forget he was ousted by a coup so any charges there after should be nullified. I am not a fan but having lived in Thailand when he was in power things were far better for foreigners and the GDP was 12~14%. The greatest crime it to take a country at the end of a gun and not one single general as corrupt as they are seeing a single day inside a prison cell. Even with the temple massacre blood on his hands.
  6. And Peter Pan and Never Never Land are real holiday locations. Sorry but if you believe what comes from the Thai authorities you should invest every penny in Thai stocks. I don't see any great announcement for the 75% of foreign investment that left Thailand after the last coup. Also the foreign currency reserves aren't being crowed about anymore. Then there is the gold mine compensation???
  7. All that quite often happens to tourists in Thailand. My advice to this family "Don't buy any lotto or raffle tickets for a while".
  8. If I did not have family in Thailand I would never go back even though I have a house there and thats not even considering the flight costs: March 2023 £3500 March 2024 £4500. We will not be going to Thailand in 2025...
  9. You mean like military generals were so good? The state Thailand is in right now is directly the result of two coups. What has happened to the mythical us dollar reserve that used to be crowed about? Rhetorical question. Generals are quite good at putting budgets into their personal accounts and when caught "misunderstanding"!
  10. You obviously don't know much about foreign/native English teachers in Thailand. When I was teaching several different subjects back in 2005 all the teachers I met were qualified to teach English as a second language. Pay scale was 35,000 to 50,000baht with a handful of schools paying 100,000+baht. After the 2006 Coup things changed native English teachers were replaced by Philippine teachers who would work for 15,000baht but mostly could hardly speak understandable/audible English. Now move on 18 years: Native English teachers being offered 25,000baht still with required workpermit with qualifications like degree etc needed. Look at the results! 2005 Thailand was progressing well in English world levels but from then till now Thailand's English level has steadily slid lower and lower.
  11. Really "I'm OK Jack", having lived in Thailand before during and after the last two coups, I can assure you life became more difficult for expats. With many expats (my friends) leaving Thailand me included. Attitudes definatly changed against expats right after my first coup with Western teachers within thai education being kicked out and replaced by Philippine teachers. Teachers pay has infact gone down in the past 18 years. Industries leave and the list goes on and on. Backward banking and the never ending double/triple pricing aimed at foreigners. If like many who come to thailand living in their rose coloured bubble especially after investing heavily in a house etc are so happy mostly from the need they never screwed up big time. Then the cracks start appearing and it becomes harder and harder to sit abblivious to one's surroundings then bitterness creeps in and then often pushed to leave. Having a bank hold your money 800k or 400k sits OK with sum but most normal people it's a problem. I for one have a conscious and find it difficult living in a country under military rule witnessing persecution of opposition and decanting voices. People should never forget the brave nurse that was witness to the murder at the temple what persecution was thrown at her and the question I always ask where is she now? Enjoy life Jack.
  12. Possibly not if all your assets frozen or quite possibly disappeared (ask the Dutch business man and his Thai wife who lost had stolen billions then kept in prison). I suppose having a trusted friend taking care if your company change 150,000baht is a way to do it. Next Thai Visa story: Mr Clever Clogs friend spent his camp change 150,000baht...
  13. People aren't broke but they had 2 years to look around and try new locations: the world is a big old place. There is also the flight costs now. Last April 2023 we a family of 4 paid £3,400 (included pick up and hotel for 3 nights) 2024 we are paying £4,600 no pickup and no hotel!!! If we didn't have a house and family we would be heading somewhere else.
  14. It's called tolerances, therfore a road if needing to be tolerant to 30 tons should be able to take 60ish ton before failing. Maybe it's just luck when the tanks roll into bkk for a reshuffle of generals the tanks don't collapse all the roads...
  15. Reincarnation depending on how you have behaved relates to what you come back as.
  16. Thailand has quite strict gun laws but it is the illegally held guns that are the problem.
  17. Have you been living under a rock or very nieve? I know a couple of men this has happened too, quite often when a man starts living with a woman with children. The reason is simple they want rid of the new guy!!! Also there are many cases of rape accusations being lies which muddies the water for real rapes. In scotland a girl can meet a guy in a night club go home with him and when he dosent phone the girl cries rape a week later and because she had a drink the guy is locked up.... Not a good time....
  18. Confused! To be a logistics hub surely you need a deep see port, major rail links road artery spanning the country and of course an international airport? I never new these were all part of Ayutthaya? Live and learn.
  19. No money to be made in that!
  20. First: a vast amount of Thai families are poor and in debt. In Thai villages girls will be married as young as 15 for the right dowry or circumstance. Legal Marriage in scotland is 16. Therefore 17 is not young (younger than Thai 19 to be legally bought, sold or rented in an illegal occupation "scratch head"). Second to be so nasty about a young woman wishing her life to be ruined and have untold actions and hardships of sub-human captivity thrust apone her; please reset moral compass. Punish yes also educate but prison No!
  21. Yes it would be. Thai customs and Post Office are well known for being crooks: it coat us more money getting our stuff out of port and 35km than from our front door in Scotland via Singapore. Plus a t shirt from uk with tax 3 x value of the t shirt. Welcome to Thailand.
  22. Customs and police will not be happy about this, its gone from planting one pill to 11.
  23. Rode elephants twice even sitting where the mahout sits "an experience" elephants are very dangerous animals when upset, angry or in Musk. I would not ride again, biggest regret is doing the tiger temple thing: I new it was wrong but didn't realise how bad the industry was. Never been close to a bear.... we all make mistakes and I've made many.
  24. Watch the video. Elephant used its trunk crushing him.
