It is a lot more complicated than that, biologically. It involves something called the SRY gene, which is usually located on the Y chromosome but can move. So, sometimes it can be found on an X-chromosome; if on the X-chromosome, the individual will appread phenotypically male but be XX. Then there are hormone interactions, which involve testosterone & the protein molecular receptor for the testoterone, if there is a mutation on either then the individual who is XY will appear phenoypically female even if genetically XY. You can also get XXY individuals, and other variations which are not so common. This is an enormously simplified view .......in others words it is a lot more complicated. Read up about it.
