  1. Do you know what the Duchy of Cornwall is? It's what I mentioned earlier - income from land that the king rents out. Land that does not really belong to him - it belongs to the state. I'm sure the staff will still be required to continue the upkeep of the various properties, palaces and gardens etc. They only have around 1,200 members of staff anyway.... hardly one of the largest employers in the UK - the NHS employs 1.6 million people. That's a large employer. There were demonstrators who were very visible during his coronation, some were arrested the night before in a huge scandal that is being investigated at the moment. Didn't you see the big yellow signs "Not my King" on TV? https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-65542558 Privileged people, are those who are given special rights, advantages, titles and power that are not available to anyone else. The royal family is the very definition of this term. Finally, what exactly is the point of swearing allegiance to a man who has not earned your allegiance?
  2. Ridiculous. They do not 'bring in' any taxes or visitors. People visit the UK to see the buildings etc. They do not get to meet the king or queen. In fact, they cost the country a lot of money, despite earning handsome sums from land that has been gifted to them over the centuries. How can you justify the existence of privileged people in this day and age? We are supposed to all be born equal, right? For those aged 65+, there is strong support for monarchy, with 77% of those in that age bracket in support. For those younger than 65, support drops to 32%, according to YouGov polls: https://yougov.co.uk/topics/society/articles-reports/2023/05/03/where-does-public-opinion-stand-monarchy-ahead-cor Feels like it's just a matter of time before they are finally kicked out of their gilded palaces.
  3. When will we get rid of this self entitled family? The UK does not need a king, and it does not need an un-elected house of lords. Full democracy please, no more half measures where the elite can control everything.
  4. History? Which planet are you living on... the bible is not a history book, it's a rather dry version of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter.
  5. As a young boy, I was frequently taken to Pantomimes: a kind of musical show for the family in which men would often dress as flamboyant women. This experience didn't traumatize me, and didn't make me question my sexuality. When I was young, the term was LGB - Lesbian, Gay & Bisexual. Now the acronym has grown to include many others, and to be honest, I think this is where the whole thing has gone wrong. Pride events have been taking place around the world for decades, but it's only been recently, with the inclusion of trans and other 'non binary / gender fluid' that we've seen such a backlash. The TQ+ community has a lot of extremists in the community. Anyone who disagrees with any small part of their demands is automatically transphobic/a hater of anyone who doesn't identify as cis. Rational debate becomes almost impossible, when the zealots and extremists on the opposing far-right jump in and claim that children are being groomed by this community. Non-binary & gender fluid folks are typically young, white and middle class who IMO, are only doing it to be cool. These idiots are doing more harm than good, by creating so many victims that there isn't any room left to care for the people who really need it. The language used when people are discussing this topic is disgraceful on both sides. No respect for anyone's point of view at all. We need to find some common ground and look at it scientifically, respectfully and most important of all, honestly. Spiritual and religious nonsense should be put to one side.
  6. Rehashing this now, almost a decade after the fact, is insane. I was all for remaining in the EU, but what's done is done. Boris was not the reason the UK left the EU, he was just one of the bigger faces and (as he has always been throughout his life) a lying toerag. I would much rather focus the government's attention on turning the UK into a real democracy. By this, I mean let's get rid of the house of lords. Patting themselves on the back and rewarding their hairdressers, loyal cronies and whomever else with life long peerages is grotesque in this day and age. The house of lords has over 800 members - it has more members than the congress of the United States, a country with a population of over 250 million compared to the UK's paltry 70 million or so. The lords are not elected, they are either appointed by the prime minister, given to the clergy, or inherited from the aristocracy. How is this democratic? Replace this bloated, outdated waste of money with an elected senate.
  7. I wish ASEANnow would stop giving credence to 'the Thaiger'. It's not a reputable news source, it does not hire qualified journalists (the person who wrote this article - Mitch- is a college dropout. Studied a little bit of journalism, and then dropped out to become an ESL teacher.) and all of the stories are rip-offs from other news sources. They even stole Richard Barrow's photo from Twitter this week and edited out his copyright mark. The Thaiger is a place that will suck all the personal data that it can mine out of your computer, and sell it on to as many people as they can. Let's do better ASEANnow.
  8. Nonsense. It's a US company, headquartered in the US, with over 50% of it's user base in the US. Check the stats yourself below. https://www.similarweb.com/website/coinbase.com/#geography
  9. I understand your annoyance, but I'm confused about this part: Why on earth would gay people want to imitate the straight formula? It's a very strange question, because marriage has been a conventional formula for straight men and women for thousands of years, and it is something that the LGBTQ community has wanted to imitate for a long, long time - and in some countries around the world, they are now rightly able to get married in churches, synagogues etc. A literal imitation of the ceremony and procedures. Husband and wife are very old words that mean; master of the house (husband) and woman (wife). I can appreciate that being called a wife as a gay man would be extremely offensive! I am confused why being called a husband would be deemed inappropriate? As language and culture evolves, perhaps these terms will change too.
  10. When I flew here on a one way ticket several years ago, the airline staff would not let me board without an outbound ticket from Thailand. I had to buy a ticket from BKK to Cambodia - I didn't use it, but it was cheap. You could look into buying a bus ticket online from Thailand - Laos, that should suffice and will be cheaper than plane tickets.
  11. It's looking more and more likely with each passing day that PT will join up with BJT. PT had the most seats in the last election (2019) but the speaker of the house came from the Democrat party who came 4th. They didn't even get the chance to form a government as the largest party, so it is understandable why their noses are out of joint. So there we have it, the party with the most seats does not always assume the speaker of the house position. That being said, globally the situation is different. In most parliaments around the world, the speaker comes from the largest party. PT & MF cannot do anything without each other. They should put aside their bickering, share the two top posts (prime minister & speaker) and get on with forming the next government.
  12. I had the displeasure of making a booking with Air Asia this week for a local flight. Unfortunately, they were the only airline flying at the specific time I needed, so there were no other options. They didn't have a good time available for me to return with them, so I had to book with another airline, Lion Air. The experience was much better. Let's start with pricing. When I searched for a suitable time and date for the Air Asia flight, a very reasonable price was displayed: 980THB for a one way journey. Clicked the 'book now' button and amazingly, the price jumped to 1,170THB on the next page. OK, fair enough, there are some taxes & fuel duty to pay, and they sneakily stuck them in after the fact. I click another button to confirm the booking, and the price rises again - this time baggage and travel insurance fees are added. I cannot remove the insurance, only the extra baggage. Insurance appears to be mandatory and the price goes up to 1,289THB. I'm quite irritated at this point, but there are no other options. I proceed to the payment page. The cheeky bastards added 189THB baht to process my payment using a local debit card. 1,478THB total. For the return leg, I was determined not to book with Air Asia and went to Lion Air's website. Managed to find a suitable time to return (same day) and the cost: 850THB. I click to confirm the booking, and the price goes up to include insurance and baggage. However, it was very easy to remove both, and the price returned to 850THB. I click the next button to pay, and there are no further charges. Taxes and fuel duty etc. were already included in the original price. There were no processing fees either. 850THB was what I saw on the first page, and 850THB is what I ended up paying. A very good service, with clear pricing.
  13. "Might probably dissolve" This makes no sense at all. 'Might' means there is a 'chance' - slim, but nonetheless, it might happen. 'Probably' means 'very likely' or 'almost certain'. Which is it? Are we talking about unsubstantiated rumors, or have there been confirmed backroom chats between the two parties? The article is not clear at all.
  14. Interesting that the first word in the headline is 'cannabis'. Why not "Tourist stabbed by..." is it to obfuscate, get clicks and inevitable comments about cannabis?
  15. I hope you're right ???? It does feel different, but there's this small voice in my head whispering deviously "This is Thailand..."
  16. I suspect that PT are hoping that the senate will reject MF, and are already making plans to 'join hands' with Anutin & others when the inevitable happens.
  17. Liz Truss's 49 days as Prime Minister were a joke. The only thing she managed to achieve was for her own personal benefit; she stole bathrobes and other paraphernalia from Chequers (source below). She has no business in Taipei, and she shouldn't have been there. I suspect she was persuaded to make some noise on behalf of Boris, as we have seen many of his cronies in recent days making headlines about how the current conservative leadership is ruining things: Priti Patel, Nadine Dorris & Jacob Rees Mogg all piled on this week. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/may/03/the-case-of-the-missing-bathrobes-what-liz-trusss-latest-gaffe-tells-us-about-grubbiness-and-greed
  18. For anyone interested, I asked ChatGPT and it provided full instructions. I was able to turn my android box into a private vpn server. When in doubt, ask a computer!
  19. I think I have another method! Could I flash install linux / ubuntu on an android TV box, turn it into a server, and then use this to connect to my home broadband with the assistance of OpenVPN or other tools?
  20. Tor bridges don't work well in China, and they are ridiculously slow if they do. I'm researching how to use cloudflare / WARP + tails to set up a remote connection to my home router in the cloud. Not sure if it'll work....
