  1. Modern Thailand isn't your old time home country.
  2. The tarriff threat to Russia is pure idiocy actually. What does Russia export to the USA these days? Trump has been all over the place in the last few days on Ukraine. Not even a concept of a credible plan. I agree with you that Putin won't be impressed.
  3. Yes, and marriage equality gives a new category of people the OPTION of getting married. It isn't a REQUIREMENT for anyone.
  4. Marriage equality -- equal marriage rights regardless of the sex of the two people involved.
  5. Adoptions by ALL married couples as co-parents are legal in Thailand. Sorry, you lose. Before a person in a same sex couple could adopt as a single person which of course meant much less legal protection for the child over time. This is a step forward for the same sex couples AND their children. Adoption isn't the only way same sex couples have children either often from previously relationships when you consider lesbians.
  6. I've noticed a big youtube trend about this as well. Also popular are interview shock reaction videos asking foreigners on the street what they think about how much certain things cost in the U.S. such as ambulance rides. Many of the facts cited are true but I think seasoned expats well understand that there are downsides too (and extra expenses) involved in living abroad. But on balance, clearly for very many people, living abroad "trumps" staying at home. 17 America Is A Scam Stories From Expats www.buzzfeed.com/dannicaramirez/america-is-a-scam-stories-by-expats-january

  7. There is no doubt that they are going to accidentally deport U.S. citizens in this wholesale shock and awe mass deportation authoritarian theater show.
  8. I don't get the issue. They are operating out of the US embassy there. Yeah employees might be Filipinos but for the Asean region, that's the location you want for English speakers. If there are problems there with service, I would blame the U.S. government, not the host nation of the embassy.
  9. I don't agree. If you remit only non-accessible sourced income, and bank savings up to December 31, 2023, no need to file. But keep records.
  10. OK, that does explain it. Thanks. He probably was a tax resident of Thailand so in that case, it sounds legit.
  11. Now you're making my brain hurt. IF you were not a tax resident of Thailand during tax year 2024, then you didn't need a TIN and you didn't need to file at all. What office was that? OK, so you probably meant a non resident of your home country. I don't think that changes the DTA rules on pension exemptions.
  12. I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. The issue is there on stepping on and stepping off. Many really do rush to get going before they should. I think it's even worse on boarding because they might look in a crowded bus that you have entered but then you might need to get to the back of the bus, so you're still walking when they speed up. Then there is speeding in general. A certain percentage drive like total maniacs.
  13. Hmm. She added the two pensions together? Isn't your state pension exempt under your DTA? If so, she should have just used your company pension on the form.
  14. Raymond Burr and Mark Hamill before Star Wars.
  15. Well our views are actually pretty close. Of course retirement extensions can never bring residence security. I'm also big on plan b and plan c and plan d. Happy travels.
  16. Well I'm not at your level of paranoia but certainly if you fail to comply with what we know now is technically the Thai tax system hoping they aren't serious, you are making yourself potentially vulnerable to bad things happening later.
  17. I absolutely agree that if there is to be credible investigation, his background and what was happening with his family would be a vital part of the picture. Of course I have no idea if such a credible investigation will actually happen. He could be railroaded on the murder charge or he could be let off without at least considering there was a damning back story.
  18. I do understand people who are skeptical that this remittance based tax will actually be enforced meaning people that technically do need to file and/or pay some tax can safely just ignore it. This is Thailand after all! Wasn't it widely broadcast that "recreational" cannabis would be criminalized again by now? You never know until you know. On the other hand we're hearing more that global non remittance based taxation is coming down the pike here. We need to be a patient and see what happens.
  19. I will respond to this by citing a foreign example. Doesn't even need to be about Hitler. Let's look at today's Russia. Let's consider Putin's policy to erase Ukraine. Consider a Russian national that opposes that policy and does NOT want Putin to succeed in that. Ipso facto ... “Every red-blooded Russian should want your president to succeed, whether you vote for him or not, whether the same party or not, whether you like him or not.” Should they really? Or is it actually much more patriotic to oppose obviously wrong actions of our leaders?
  20. I think some people have reported doing that here. Starting this tax season for last year.
  21. No. Not me. I am not self enforcing anything. I am not rushing to get a TIN and I detest the commercial and otherwise pushers saying we all need them. I know I don't need a TIN yet based on my personal situation. If how I read the IRA policy is correct I will need one during a later year. By then I presume that rule will be much better clarified and I do predict expat retirees are that have accessable income are going to be more or less forced into the system. But don't accuse me of pushing it. I hate it but we don't always get what we want.
  22. The victim at least deserves the courtesy of a thorough investigation. He didn't ask to be thrown in that water. The Thai authorities consider the case serious enough to initially charge him with murder. It's totally obnoxious to jump to ANY final conclusions before investigation.
  23. That's a can of worms. I wonder what the vote would be if the U.S. had the Australian system.
  24. Let's get real. Probably zero expat retirees with no in Thailand income has filed before. The information given is about the reading of the DTA about pensions. Absolutely what has changed was about the timing, but like it or not (I don't like it) there is almost no doubt the starting this year such expat retirees with only remitted accessable income to show WILL be filing and most likely such filing will sooner or later be ENFORCED.
