  1. Well you could use a marriage visa. However, overall, I would not recommend Thailand for retirement except for the very wealthy (because that's the group that is actually WELCOME here). Better to choose a country that offers a path to permanent residency or even citizenship and even better entry into their health care system. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying Thailand is a bad place to retire purely as a place to LIVE. It's actually quite good. The problem is the VISA SYSTEM.
  2. Not true but using multiple accounts and/or banks complicates things and officers like things to be simpler.
  3. How many chairs do you have (in what sized housing space)? Do not count sofas, small stools, bean bags, or toilet seats. I've got SEVEN (count em' 7) in a one bedroom. Some are never used to sit in. Some are used for other things than sitting. Inspired by Joe Pera.
  4. Funny. The Riviera Maya is ALL of Mexico now? To me, the major downside of Mexico isn't crime but it is cost. It's considerably more expensive than Ecuador and Colombia.
  5. Foreign banks share info with the IRS without 1099s. You're right the minimum to require a 1099 from a US bank is 10 dollars but filers are still supposed to report under that.
  6. Well that bank will show up in my tax software as I import previous filings but I can delete it. I do the rounding myself rather than ever entering any cents. It seems weird to me to list a bank to report 0.
  7. Looking forward to my IRS filing for 2021 I can see one of my Thai bank accounts will have interest under 50 cents. As I round up or down all figures as is typical for tax filings I have reported one dollar before for interest over 50 cents. But I don't know what to do if its under 50 cents. If I report one dollar, thats lying. If I report 0, that's taxable interest unreported. No. Not rounding all numbers on my return is not an option. A penny for your thoughts?
  8. Why would a person need an appointment when there's instant walk in service?
  9. Are the Thai officials aware the current byzantine Thai pass scheme from hell is directly suppressing real regular tourists? I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that they really don't want large numbers for the forseeable future. They can tell tourism industry people well we opened it for you, not our fault people didn't come.
  10. Can't someone find a way to contact the Thai consulate in LA and get them to explain the reason that they are posting rules different than everywhere else on the planet? Has LA gone rogue?
  11. I was recently given the come back order page during the processing, not upon passport pickup. My assumption is this policy is still in effect but I wouldn't do it without the order. They can see what happened next extension regardless.
  12. Needed to come in the next day to pick up the stamped passport
  13. I did last week. 3 minute wait to get queue number. No wait for retirement desk. Processed in 5 minutes. Of course you need time to fill out the application.
  14. My idea it seems has occurred to others. As it stands now many people are going to want or need ADVICE on the Thailand pass. Our famous American lawyer agrees calling the current Thailand pass byzantine.
  15. Yeah. Usually. But that isn't always a good thing.
