I respect your skeptical POV. From my POV, what you are proposing to do would be quite complicated and if there is a choice I would prefer to keep things as simple as possible, yes even if it did subject me to some probably small amount of tax. It's also a risky tactic from the POV of a higher likelihood of being subject to an audit. In my opinion, anyway. You may be right. You may be wrong. I have no idea. I am not qualified to make that judgement. I still plan to eventually see a Thai tax lawyer that I have in mind and get his opinion when this does become an issue for me (probably not for some time). By then given he would be dealing with retired expat haven Jomtien he might actually have some insider knowledge and experience about this US retirement account issue. Sincerely, good luck.

USA retirement accounts are very specific rules based accounts and can't logically be called the same as bank accounts or the same as investments held OUTSIDE such accounts. That said I question the supposed Thai revenue labeling them and treating them as PENSIONS. They aren't really pensions either. They probably should have been included in the Thai US DTA the same as excluded social security, but we're not so lucky.

I get the feeling that you (along with enemies of the U.S. like Putin) are very much ENJOYING watching the spectacle of the U.S. tearing itself apart.

So far I have done with Grab and haven't tried with Panda yet but I assume it would be the same. Check CASH for payment option. Driver arrives. Show him my phone with my bank app open and ask if I can scan. He says yes. I scan his QR code on his phone and enter the amount of the charge on my bank app for the food (plus optional tip). Confirm. Done.

Does Trump completely lack decency and compassion?

Wait for his statement years from now -- I've got a CONCEPT of a plan to end that war. Why anyone believes that shyster about anything he promises continues to amaze me. -
Yeah threatening war with NATO allies Denmark and Canada and ally Panama wouldn't be war mongering. Oh no! God King Mr. Trump would never do such a thing! He's a very moral man. Yes he is. I'll never understand the maga/Kremlin talking point of asserting that Ukraine DEFENDING themselves against the Z Putin invaders is war mongering. It's Putin that is the war mongerer in that conflict.

Yes. Of course we would very much want an official announcement from them in this case about how they will view remittances of U.S. retirement account withdrawals. But consider that it's entirely possible that we will NEVER get anything as clear as that! The Integrity Legal guy repeatedly alludes to that -- that they or any taxing authority for that matter is not in the business of helping potential taxpayers avoid tax. So again on the U.S. retirement account issue, how would you weigh the credibility of an opinion and a very clear one at that from expattaxthailand which is for sticklers a Thai owned concern vs. the opinions of random people on an internet forum? The answer is obvious that the former carries more weight, yes? Now going forward perhaps we will get confirming or refuting reports from American expats asking about this, even being audited about it at various revenue offices. Those would carry more weight too than just random opinions. But we have no such reports at this point. All we can do at this point is the best that we can. To be clear, I'm not advocating one position or another on this. I just want to know what the deal is! And so far the most clear and credible opinion I've got is as I posted before.

What Movies or TV shows are you watching (2025)
Jingthing replied to Rimmer's topic in Entertainment
Kalak (movie) It felt the right time to watch the first Greenlandic content movie that I've even seen. A quite interesting quirky story of a Danish male nurse with a back story of sexual abuse by his father working in Greenland with his family but also into a lot of open relationship affairs with the locals. Based on the opening scene alone -- not for children. The scene where he talks to a doctor who is a connoisseur of pharmaceuticals is a true classic and no doubt reflects a dark reality of some in the health industry. You get a real sense of place (Greenland) from the movie, not so much about outdoor scenes but more about indoor culture. The meaning of Kalak is dirty Greenlander which is used both positively and negatively. -
As you mentioned expattaxthailand, I will provide an update on their very clear opinion about the treatment by RD of U.S. retirement accounts (IRAs Roth and Traditional / 401ks). -- They are viewed as NOT excluded PENSIONS if income from them (withdrawals) is remitted -- The value as of December 31, 2023 of such accounts is irrelevant and not in any way excluded from Thai tax going forward. They are NOT treated the same way as saved money in a bank account at that date (of which funds are EXCLUDED from Thai tax if remitted) -- The FULL AMOUNT of withdraws from such accounts is subject to Thai tax if remitted to Thailand. The underlying investment vehicles in such accounts (stocks, bonds, etc.) is totally irrelevant and can not be accounted for based on a profit loss basis as can regular investments NOT in retirement accounts. We have heard strong opinions here totally countering the above. But please rather than just express such opinions, back this up with your source. As far as I know we have no statement from RD on this matter of great interest to many American retired expats. Of course expats in this stew of ambiguity are free to make a more advantageous reading of this situation and for example ignore the guidelines mentioned above. Then it would be up to them to defend their view upon audit and maybe that would fly at RD offices. If you visit a Thai tax lawyer and get opinions either agreeing or disagreeing with the opinion above, by all means post about that. Don't shoot the messenger.

Bonus points that Trump is the choice that global dictators especially Putin strongly preferred.

Avoid to pay tax
Jingthing replied to Jack1988's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
You're barking up the wrong tree looking to the embassy. Your social security income is excluded from Thai tax. I don't happen to know the situation with state government pensions so confirm this but think also excluded. So if both are excluded and that's all the income that you remit, you will have no need to ever get a Thai Tax ID or ever to file. -
Avoid to pay tax
Jingthing replied to Jack1988's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
It depends on what exactly are the sources of your U.S. income that you remit. You may indeed owe Thai tax or you may not.
