Picture from responders. An incident has unfolded in Chumphon as the bodies of a father and his 10-year-old stepson were recovered after their boat was swept away during a heavy storm. Relatives, overcome with grief, confirmed the identities and accepted the deaths as a tragic accident. The incident occurred on December 14 when heavy rainfall and strong winds caused the fiberglass boat carrying Mr. Chaiyut, 30, and his stepson to crash into a bridge pillar over the Nakharach Canal in Tak Daet Subdistrict, Mueang Chumphon District. The strong current overturned the boat, and both victims were swept away. Local rescue teams, district officials, marine police, and community leaders had been searching intensively for four days. On the morning of December 17, Pol Lt Thanakarn Thabkham, an investigator from Mueang Chumphon Police Station, received a report of a body found entangled in reeds along the Nakharach Canal near a concrete road in Village 6, Tak Daet. Upon inspection by police and hospital medical staff, the deceased was identified as Mr. Chaiyut. His body, bloated and showing signs of prolonged water exposure, was found wearing a blue short-sleeve shirt and gray shorts with several tattoos on his torso, the same as reported by the family at the time he went missing. The discovery drew the attention of local residents, and shortly after, Ms. Thitapha, 50, a resident of Mueang Chumphon and Mr. Chaiyut’s mother, arrived at the scene to identify her son. She tearfully confirmed his identity. Senior District Officer Nopporn Meesti, who oversaw the search, explained that teams had scoured both land and water since the incident. The body of Mr. Chaiyut was discovered approximately one kilometre from the original site, floating face-down. At approximately 13:20 on December 17, search teams found the body of the 10-year-old child about 4–5 kilometres from the original site in Thung Kha Subdistrict. Relatives have stated that they do not suspect foul play and believe the deaths were the result of a tragic accident. Authorities will conduct further examinations before releasing the bodies to the families. -- 2024-12-18

UPDATE Police Confirm Train Collision Death of 29-Year-Old Man Was Not Foul Play Picture from responders. Authorities have clarified the circumstances surrounding the death of a 29-year-old man who was struck by a train in Bang Lamung, Chonburi, dismissing suspicions of foul play after discovering a shirt tied around his ankles. The incident occurred at approximately 05:05 on December 17, on the train tracks before Rong Po Soi, Moo 1, Bang Lamung Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi. The deceased was identified as Mr. Sitthichai Chaisin, a resident of Maha Sarakham province. Initial reports raised concerns when officers noticed a shirt tied around the victim’s feet, prompting the involvement of forensic police from Chonburi’s Region 2 Provincial Police Office. At 08:35 Pol. Col. Navin Sinthurat, Superintendent of Bang Lamung Police Station, and forensic officers conducted a detailed examination at the scene. Their investigation confirmed there were no signs of physical assault on the body. The shirt tied around the victim’s ankles was determined to be makeshift footwear for walking along the train tracks and not a form of restraint. Further investigation, led by Pol. Lt. Col. Kornpong Sukhvisit, Deputy Superintendent of Investigations, uncovered additional clues. Police reviewed evidence from local witnesses, CCTV footage, and technical analysis, which included posts from the deceased’s TikTok account. In a recent post, Mr. Sitthichai expressed distress, writing: “If my death makes you happy, I’ll disappear from your family. I’ll remove my name from the house registration to avoid bringing shame. Sorry for being an ungrateful person. #RailwayKhaoNoiPleaseCleanThisUp” The post suggested emotional turmoil, which may have contributed to the incident. Police are gathering statements from the victim’s family to gain further clarity. Pol. Col. Navin confirmed that, for transparency, the victim’s body has been transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the Police General Hospital in Bangkok for a thorough autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. The findings will provide closure to the family, who will then proceed with religious funeral rites. -- 2024-12-17

On the evening of December 16, at around 20:00 rescue volunteers from Sawang Bampen Thammasathan Foundation received a report from villagers about a missing person who was believed to have fallen into a deep pit. Responders immediately rushed to the scene. The pit was reported to be 5 metres square and 10 metres deep, containing water about 1.2 meters deep. Rescuers called out during the search and heard a faint response from the bottom of the pit. Villagers and rescue volunteers used a 15-metre-long ladder to descend and retrieve the elderly woman. After securing her to a rescue stretcher, they carefully lifted her to safety in a challenging operation that lasted about 30 minutes. Mrs. Samran Owatsuwan, 69, the younger sister of the victim, explained that her sister, Mrs. Samroeng Owatsuwan, often walked around the area. On the day of the incident, Mrs. Samran returned from the market at around 10:00 and noticed her sister was missing. Initially, she assumed her sister had gone to visit relatives. By 17:00 when her sister still had not returned, she alerted neighbours and began searching. At around 20:00 they discovered that her sister had fallen into the pit. Police volunteer Mr. Monchai Panyatano, 45, stated that during the search, they found the victim’s shoe near the pit, prompting them to call out and receive a response. They immediately notified family members and rescue teams. Mr. Suthiphong Yodked, a rescue volunteer, reported that upon arrival, they found Mrs. Samroeng floating in chest-deep water at the bottom of the pit. Rescuers used a stretcher and ropes to carefully lift her out while providing initial first aid. Despite the harrowing ordeal, Mrs. Samroeng, though exhausted, suffered no major injuries. She explained that she had been walking home when she accidentally fell into the pit. Rescue teams transported her to Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital for a thorough medical examination and to allow her to rest. Authorities praised the efforts of local residents and rescue teams for their swift response and coordination in saving the elderly woman. -- 2024-12-17

Picture from responders. A catamaran named OMBRE (HSB5551) partially sank near Koh Hey in Phuket’s Rawai Subdistrict on December 16, after water began flooding the rear of the vessel. Despite efforts to pump out the water, the boat ultimately capsized around 14:00. The incident occurred near the floating “jigsaw” mooring buoys off Banana Beach, Koh Hey. Fortunately, all passengers had already disembarked and were enjoying their time on the island, while the crew members on board escaped unharmed. Phuket’s Marine Department has coordinated with the boat owner to salvage the vessel, with recovery operations expected to conclude by the afternoon of December 17. An official order will be issued to prohibit further use of the vessel until a full investigation is completed. The OMBRE, registered at Samui Port, is a passenger catamaran operating between Ranong and Satun Provinces within 24 nautical miles of the shore under calm conditions. The vessel has a capacity of 60 passengers, with a crew of 6, including one captain. According to reports, the catamaran had successfully transported a group of tourists to Banana Beach, Koh Hey. After the tourists disembarked, the captain secured the vessel to a mooring buoy to wait for their return. Shortly after, water began flooding the rear of the boat, leading to the vessel listing and the sinking. Tourists were safely transported back to shore via an alternate boat chartered by the tour company. -- 2024-12-17

Picture from responders. In a shocking incident in Chonburi's Phan Thong district, a 39- year-old woman fatally shot her husband, a village assistant headman, after a heated argument over infidelity and ongoing domestic violence. The tragedy unfolded at around noon on December 16 at a house in Nong Hong subdistrict. Police officers from Phan Thong Police Station, led by Pol. Lt. Chathakanin Inson, arrived at the scene alongside medical staff and rescue workers. They discovered the body of Mr. Jumphon Sonsamret, 36, kneeling face-down near the bed, wearing only gray shorts. He had sustained eight gunshot wounds to his back, with five bullets exiting through his chest. Evidence at the scene included five 9mm shell casings, two .380 bullets, and two semi-automatic handguns, a 9mm and a .380, both loaded. Clumps of hair were also found in the bedroom, further indicating signs of previous violence. The suspect, Ms. Anantaya Nimitmala, was found crying outside the house and admitted to shooting her husband. She told police that the argument began over financial troubles and his alleged infidelity. She described years of physical abuse, including being confined to the house out of jealousy and being assaulted regularly. The altercation escalated when Mr. Jumphon allegedly cut her hair during the weekend and assaulted her again earlier that morning. Fearing for her life when he threatened her with a gun, Ms. Anantaya retrieved her own firearm, reportedly purchased from a police officer, and fired multiple shots at him. Authorities have taken Ms. Anantaya into custody for further questioning and legal proceedings, while the victim's body has been sent to Chonburi Hospital for an autopsy. Adding an eerie dimension to the case, it was revealed that Mr. Jumphon had recently posted on social media about a fortune- teller's prediction that he would die from gunfire. He claimed to have entrusted evidence of the prediction to a close friend, stating he was unafraid of the future but feared good people might betray him. As Ms. Anantaya was escorted to the police station, the victim's father, visibly enraged, attempted to attack her, prompting officers to intervene and prevent further conflict. -- 2024-12-17
