A mother and daughter were seriously injured in a car crash late on December 12 when their Honda Jazz collided with a truck, causing the car to overturn and block the road. The crash led to a subsequent collision involving a pickup truck, leaving the pair trapped inside their vehicle. According to reports, the incident occurred at approximately 23:15 on the outbound lane of Ratchaphruek Road, at the Ratchaphruek-Rattanathibet overpass in Bang Rak Noi, Nonthaburi Province. Local police from Bang Si Mueang Police Station and emergency responders from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, authorities found a severely damaged Honda Jazz with Suphan Buri license plates overturned in the middle of the road. Inside the vehicle, two injured individuals were trapped: Ms. Boonyang 49, and her daughter, Ms. Ariyada 19. The car’s roof had collapsed, pinning them inside. Rescue workers used hydraulic cutting tools to extricate the mother and daughter before providing first aid. They were later transported to Phra Nang Klao Hospital for further treatment. A Toyota pickup truck with Bangkok license plates, carrying a full load of coconuts, was also found damaged at the scene. The truck had collided with the overturned Honda Jazz after being unable to stop in time. The crash also caused significant damage to the bridge’s safety barriers. Mr. Samrit the pickup truck driver, recounted the moments leading up to the crash. He said he had been transporting coconuts from Ban Phaeo District, Samut Sakhon, to Talad Thai Market when he noticed a 6-wheel truck ahead. The Honda Jazz, traveling in the center lane, suddenly swerved and collided with the truck’s rear corner, possibly due to the driver’s drowsiness or an abrupt attempt to overtake. The impact caused the car to veer into the concrete barrier before overturning and sliding across the road. Mr. Samrit explained that he could not brake in time and collided with the overturned car. After the incident, the 6-wheel truck involved reportedly fled the scene, leaving authorities to investigate further. Police are collecting evidence, including CCTV footage from the overpass, to determine the exact cause of the crash. They also plan to interview the injured mother and daughter once their conditions stabilize. Authorities are continuing their investigation and urge any witnesses or the driver of the 6-wheel truck to come forward. -- 2024-12-14

  14. Authorities Seize Chemicals for Producing Etomidate Used in E-Cigarettes A joint operation led by Thailand’s Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) has uncovered a stockpile of chemicals used to produce Etomidate, a dangerous substance increasingly misused in e-cigarettes. Authorities revealed that the seized materials could produce up to 600,000 e-cigarette doses, posing severe health risks, including respiratory failure. 15. Picture courtesy of ONCB A joint operation led by Thailand’s Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) has uncovered a stockpile of chemicals used to produce Etomidate, a dangerous substance increasingly misused in e-cigarettes. Authorities revealed that the seized materials could produce up to 600,000 e-cigarette doses, posing severe health risks, including respiratory failure. The raid took place at 13:30 on December 12 at a warehouse in Samae Dam, Bang Khun Thian district, Bangkok. The operation was spearheaded by ONCB Secretary-General Pol. Lt. Gen. Phanurat Lakboon, along with representatives from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Department of Industrial Works, the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD), the Royal Thai Navy, and the National Narcotics Control Commission (NNCC) of China. The seizure followed a tip-off from Chinese authorities, who had apprehended suspects linked to Etomidate trafficking in China. Investigations revealed that four Chinese nationals smuggled 3.5 tons of chemicals into Thailand for Etomidate production. The raid uncovered seven types of chemicals; 1. Phenylethylamine 2. Triethylamine 3. Benzene 4. Ethyl chloroacetate 5. Formic acid (85%) 6. Ethyl formate 7. Potassium thiocyanate These substances, stored in 11 containers 2,200 litres, could produce 200 kilograms of Etomidate, valued at 140 million baht in the Chinese market. Pol. Lt. Gen. Phanurat explained that Etomidate is a short-acting anesthetic requiring strict medical supervision. However, it has been repurposed as an illicit additive in e-cigarettes, causing neurological damage, tremors, and, in severe cases, respiratory failure. The substance is reportedly spreading across China and Taiwan and has begun to surface in Thailand. The ONCB emphasized that while Etomidate is not yet classified as a narcotic in Thailand, its potential misuse could lead to it being reclassified as a controlled substance under the Psychotropic Substances Act. Officials also warned of the risks to youths, as Etomidate-laced e-cigarettes could induce unconsciousness, leaving individuals vulnerable to abuse. Authorities are pursuing the four Chinese suspects connected to the operation. The chemicals were smuggled via maritime routes and stored in the rented warehouse. The warehouse owner has cooperated with the investigation and provided critical information leading to the seizure. This case marks the latest in Thailand’s efforts to combat the use of precursor chemicals for manufacturing illicit substances. The ONCB and its partners remain committed to dismantling cross-border networks using Thailand as a production hub for dangerous chemicals. -- 2024-12-13
