Picture from responders. Dash-cam below. A heavy concrete counterweight used to stabilise a crane fell onto Rama IV Road this afternoon, crushing a car and damaging power lines. Authorities are worked swiftly to clear the scene. At approximately 16.05, the Rama 199 Emergency Radio Centre received a report of a crane-related incident on Rama IV Road near a prominent building in the Silom area of Bang Rak District. Firefighters and rescue teams from Bang Rak Station were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival responders found a large concrete block, which serves as a counterweight for a crane, lying in the middle of the road. The block had fallen from the crane, crushing a car parked nearby and pulling down several electrical wires. The crane company’s team quickly began removing the concrete block, while officials from the Metropolitan Electricity Authority worked on repairing the damaged power lines. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported. The incident caused significant traffic congestion in the area, as authorities cordoned off parts of the road to facilitate the removal of the debris and ensure public safety. Witnesses reported hearing a loud crash as the concrete block fell, followed by sparks from the damaged power lines. Authorities are now investigating the cause of the accident to determine whether it was due to equipment failure or human error. Local officials have called on construction companies to prioritise safety and ensure proper equipment maintenance to prevent similar incidents in the future. -- 2024-12-15 ScreenRecording_12-14-2024 17-33-01_1.mp4

Picture of responders. At approximately 11:00 on December 14, the Police at Thep Sathit Police Station in Chaiyaphum Province were notified of an incident involving a 42-wheeled trailer carrying a giant wind turbine blade. The trailer lost control and overturned on the side of the road, causing the wind turbine blade to fall and crush a worker, resulting in their death at the scene. The incident occurred along Highway 205, Suan Narai, near the Sap Thaworn School in Wat Tabak Subdistrict, Thep Sathit District, Chaiyaphum Province. Emergency services, including the Huk 31 Rescue Team and medical personnel from Thep Sathit Hospital, were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, authorities discovered the overturned Volvo 42-wheeled trailer, registered in Nakhon Pathom, which had been transporting a large wind turbine blade. The trailer had veered off the road and into a sugarcane field on the side of the road. At the rear of the trailer were two workers who were tasked with managing the turbine blade during transport. When the truck overturned, the blade fell off the trailer, landing on and fatally crushing one of the workers. The deceased was identified as 37-year-old Mr. Chai Inthachao, a Burmese worker. His body was found face down, pinned by the wind turbine blade. A fellow worker, who was seated beside the deceased at the time of the incident, recounted the harrowing event. He explained that they were both seated in the rear of the trailer, managing the blade. When the truck lost control and overturned, the deceased fell off the trailer, and the massive turbine blade followed, crushing him immediately. The driver of the truck, 46-year-old Mr. Samran Aodton, shared his account of the incident. He explained that he was transporting the turbine blade to a location in the nearby village of Nong Chabok, about four kilometres away, when the trailer’s rear end lost control and overturned. The wind turbine blade then fell off the truck, killing the worker. The authorities will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the incident and follow legal procedures. The body of the deceased will be returned to his family. -- 2024-12-15

Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Two nurses from Vachira Phuket Hospital are being hailed as heroes after they used their medical expertise to assist two passengers who lost consciousness aboard a flight from Phuket to Suvarnabhumi Airport. On the evening of December 13, during flight PG278, registered nurses Mr. Kittithat Maitreechit, a senior nurse, and Ms. Wannaporn Maitreechit, a registered nurse, were traveling when a passenger collapsed in the aisle of the plane. As the flight attendants went to check on the situation, the two nurses, who were seated nearby, noticed something was wrong. Upon checking, they found a foreign passenger unconscious on the floor. The nurses immediately assessed the passenger, finding that although unresponsive, the individual still had a pulse and was breathing. The passenger’s companions reported that the person had been suffering from diarrhea, vomiting, and fatigue. The nurses then retrieved the emergency medical kit onboard and began evaluating vital signs while administering first aid. After a short time, the passenger regained consciousness, was able to respond to questions, and even stood and walked with assistance. The patient was then moved to a seat for further observation. The flight crew was informed, and everything seemed stable enough for the flight to proceed. The attendants demonstrated emergency equipment use, and the plane continued its journey. However, shortly after takeoff from Phuket, another passenger fell unconscious. This time, the flight attendants, concerned about the worsening condition of the passenger, made a public appeal over the intercom for any medical professionals aboard to assist. Upon hearing the announcement, the two nurses again sprang into action, approached the patient, and conducted a thorough assessment. The second passenger, who had last eaten the day before, was suffering from severe stomach pain, vomiting (with green bile), and diarrhea. The nurses quickly administered fluids and anti-nausea medication while keeping a close watch on the patient’s condition. Both passengers showed signs of improvement and were monitored closely as the flight neared its arrival in Bangkok. The quick response and professionalism of the nurses ensured the safety of both patients in a challenging situation, especially as the plane encountered turbulent weather. According to the flight attendants, this was the first time in their experience that two medical emergencies occurred on the same flight. -- 2024-12-15

Picture courtesy of ThaiRath. A team of Thai and Japanese researchers has unearthed significant dinosaur fossils, including the ribs of a plant-eating dinosaur and the teeth of a carnivorous species, dating back 100-110 million years. The discovery, made in Phon Phisai District, Khon Kaen, has sparked calls for government support to develop the site as a tourist attraction and educational centre. The excavation began in the agricultural area of Rai Tama Farm, where researchers set up camp for their first day of work. The farm owner, Mrs. Naen Prommarin, 56, revealed that the site has a long history connected to fossil discoveries. She recounted how, in 2006, a local monk, Phra Achan Subin Khantitharo, initially discovered what he thought was an elephant vertebra while collecting rocks to build a temple structure. Upon further examination, the bones were believed to be dinosaur fossils, prompting a report to the Department of Mineral Resources. In 2007, experts from the department confirmed the findings, which included ribs and teeth from a large, long-necked plant-eating dinosaur. Subsequent excavations continued until 2011, when financial constraints and other research priorities halted the work. However, the landowner later donated the site, known as Hin Rong, to the government to facilitate ongoing fossil research. This December, the research effort was reignited under the leadership of Ms. Sasaon Khansupha, a senior geologist from Sirindhorn Museum, in collaboration with Japanese paleontologists. Early findings include fossilized ribs of a sauropod, a herbivorous dinosaur species, and teeth belonging to theropods, carnivorous dinosaurs. The fossils are estimated to be 100-110 million years old. Additionally, the team uncovered petrified wood dating back 700,000-900,000 years and freshwater mollusk fossils. Ms. Sasaon emphasised the importance of government funding to support excavation and research. She stated that fossil studies not only contribute to scientific knowledge but also have the potential to transform the site into an educational centre and tourist attraction, benefiting local communities and inspiring the next generation of scientists. The discovery underscores Thailand’s rich paleontological history and the need to preserve these invaluable assets for academic and cultural enrichment. -- 2024-12-15

Picture from responders. A fire broke out in a townhouse in Soi Phetkasem 48, Bangkok in the early hours of December 14, causing significant damage to the property and two neighbouring homes. Amidst the chaos, a neighbour managed to save his collection of pet snakes, calling them his most valuable possessions. At approximately 03:35 Lt. Wacharapong Maneethong of Phasi Charoen Police Station received a report of the fire. Firefighters, rescue teams, and volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival at House No. 29, Soi Phetkasem 48, the fire was found raging at the rear of a two-story townhouse, starting in the kitchen and quickly spreading to the second floor. The fire also affected two adjacent homes. Firefighters worked swiftly, extinguishing the blaze within 45 minutes. Two individuals, 14-year-old Pathompong Rojanaprajuk and his 56-year-old mother, Mrs. Panida Klanhar, sustained injuries from smoke inhalation and were rushed to Mit Pracha Hospital for treatment. The house owner, 29-year-old Mr. Thanawat Waipricha, was unharmed. Mr. Phusit, a 59-year-old neighbour, recounted his experience, saying, “At first, I saw only smoke. When I opened the back door, I noticed flames starting to spread on the balcony. I rushed to grab my belongings and heard the voices of people escaping from the second floor.” Although the fire completely destroyed the initial townhouse which was the seat of the fire, neighbouring properties sustained only minor damage. Notably, one neighbour managed to rescue his collection of snakes during the evacuation. He carried out seven plastic containers, each housing a snake of various species, and lined them up outside. The incident sparked curiosity among residents, who gathered to watch. The owner of the snakes reassured everyone, saying, “They’re harmless and non-venomous. I keep them for breeding and because I’m passionate about them. They are my most valuable possessions.” Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. -- 2024-12-15

Picture from responders. The driver of a white car involved in a fatal hit-and-run in Phuket, has surrendered to police, confessing to drinking beer prior to the crash and fleeing the scene out of panic. Authorities have charged him with multiple serious offenses. The incident occurred in the early hours of December 14. At approximately 03:20 Thalang Police Station received reports of a collision involving a Honda motorcycle with license plate from Phang Nga Province. The motorcycle was found abandoned on Srisoonthorn Road in Sri Soonthorn Subdistrict, Thalang District. The rider, later identified as 22-year-old Mr. Kulchat, was discovered dead over 1 kilometre away in the Cherng Talay area, having been dragged along the road by the fleeing vehicle. Police reviewed CCTV footage and identified the suspect vehicle as a white Toyota Yaris with license plate registered in Phuket. The driver, 41-year-old Mr. Watchara, was contacted by police and instructed to surrender himself along with the vehicle. At around 10:00 on December 14, Mr. Watchara arrived at Thalang Police Station, bringing the white Yaris involved in the collision. Investigators seized the vehicle for forensic examination to collect evidence of the crash. During questioning, Mr. Watchara admitted to being the driver of the vehicle. He stated that on December 13, at approximately 22:00, he was drinking beer with friends at a residence in Sri Soonthorn Subdistrict. He consumed one bottle of beer and left around 02:00 to drive home in Cherng Talay. As he reached the Bang Jo intersection and turned onto Srisoonthorn Road, his car collided with the victim’s motorcycle. Mr. Watchara claimed he panicked and fled the scene, unaware that the victim’s body had become lodged under his vehicle. He then drove back to a friend’s house in Bang Maruan, where he stayed until police contacted him later that morning. Police conducted an alcohol test on Mr. Watchara through a breathalyzer and sent him for a blood alcohol test at a hospital. He has been charged with “reckless driving causing death” and “fleeing the scene without providing assistance or reporting the incident to authorities.” The investigation continues as police gather further evidence to present the case in court. -- 2024-12-15

Picture courtesy of immigration. Thai immigration authorities apprehended a Chinese national wanted for murder after he attempted to flee to Thailand to evade justice. According to reports, the suspect, identified as Quan Guofeng, fled China after allegedly committing a murder. He boarded Flight FM 831 from Shanghai and arrived at Phuket International Airport late night on December 13. Pol. Maj. Gen. Cherngron Rimpadee, Commander of Immigration Division 2, revealed that at 22:00 on December 13, he received orders from Pol. Maj. Gen. Thanit Thaiwatcharamas, Deputy Commissioner of the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, who was assisting the Immigration Bureau, to intercept the fugitive. Chinese authorities had requested cooperation in denying Quan entry into Thailand and facilitating his return to China to face charges. Immigration officers at Phuket Airport were instructed to position themselves near the aircraft’s exit to intercept Quan upon his arrival at 23:15. Coordination with airline staff confirmed Quan’s seat, allowing officers to discreetly detain him upon landing. Pol. Maj. Gen. Cherngron stated that Quan was denied entry under Thai law, which prohibits individuals deemed a threat to public safety, national security, or international relations. Quan is also subject to an international arrest warrant issued by Chinese authorities. The suspect is now set to be deported back to China, where he will face legal proceedings for his alleged crimes. In his statement, Pol. Maj. Gen. Cherngron emphasised Thailand’s robust security measures at immigration checkpoints, supported by the APPS (Advanced Passenger Processing System). This system flags individuals with international arrest warrants across 190 countries, enabling swift action to prevent fugitives from exploiting Thailand as a safe haven. “With the New Year approaching, we are heightening security in line with the directives of Pol. Maj. Gen. Panumas Boonyaluck, Acting Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau. This includes strengthened international cooperation to intercept foreign fugitives attempting to cross borders,” Cherngron noted. -- 2024-12-15

Picture from responders. An 82-year-old man was found dead in his home garage after reportedly taking his own life due to health-related stress. Authorities believe the man's declining physical condition led to the tragic incident. On December 13, officers from Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat Police Station, accompanied by forensic doctors and rescue personnel, responded to a report of a suicide at a residence in the Pho Sadet Subdistrict. Upon arrival at the single- story home, situated in a fruit orchard, they discovered the deceased, identified as Mr. Aied, seated face-down near the back garage. Nearby, authorities found the deceased's walking frame, glasses, and shoes. A nylon rope was still tied to a roof beam in the garage. A preliminary autopsy revealed bruising on the neck but no signs of foul play. The death was estimated to have occurred within the previous five hours. Relatives informed investigators that Mr. Aied had been in good health and active in managing the family orchard until recently. He had begun experiencing severe breathing difficulties, fatigue, and weakness, necessitating the use of a four-legged walking frame, to move around. On the morning of the incident, his children left for work as usual, while his wife, who is also in poor health, remained indoors. A relative visiting the house later discovered Mr. Aied's body in the garage. Police suspect that the elderly man, distressed by his health struggles, decided to end his life. He reportedly tied a nylon rope to a 2-meter bamboo pole, secured it to a garage beam, and attempted to hang himself. However, investigators believe the rope may have loosened, causing him to fall and succumb to asphyxiation. Relatives did not suspect foul play and have accepted the cause of death. After the examination, the body was released to the family for funeral rites. If you or anyone you know is in emotional distress, please contact the Samaritans of Thailand 24-hour hotline: 02 713 6791 (English), 02 713 6793 (Thai) or the Thai Mental Health Hotline at 1323 (Thai). Picture courtesy of Matichon Authorities in Thailand have detained a Myanmar fishing vessel and its six crew members for illegally entering Thai waters, seizing 40 tons of salted krill as part of the operation. The 3rd Naval Area Command of the National Maritime Security Coordination Center (NMSC Region 3) reported that on December 13, at 21.00, a coordinated operation was led by Vice Admiral Suwat Donsakoon, Commander of the 3rd Naval Area Command and Director of NMSC Region 3. The operation involved multiple agencies, including the Ranong Maritime Security Coordination Center (NMSC Ranong), the Ranong Provincial Water Police, and the Department of Fisheries’ Ranong checkpoint, among others. The mission, prompted by intelligence from the 2nd Coastal Guard Regiment, targeted suspected illegal transfers of fishery products near Ranong’s port. Officials intercepted the Myanmar vessel, Pyi Phyo Hlaing 18, a 50-ton fishing vessel, as it was unloading its cargo at Wai Thong Port in Pak Nam Subdistrict, Muang District, Ranong Province. Upon inspection, the vessel was found to be carrying 40,000 kilograms of salted krill, packed in 2,000 bags weighing 20 kilograms each. The crew, all Myanmar nationals, failed to produce legal documentation for importing fishery products via the Fisheries Single Window (FSW) system, as required by Thai law. Authorities charged the vessel and crew with violating the 2015 Fisheries Act, amended in 2017. Under Section 92 of the Act, importing fishery products into the kingdom without official authorisation is prohibited. Violators face penalties under Section 158, including fines amounting to five times the value of the seized products. The crew was also charged with illegally importing marine products into Thailand without permits. They were handed over to investigators at Pak Nam Police Station in Ranong Province for further legal proceedings. The seizure underscores Thailand’s commitment to combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities in its waters and protecting its maritime resources. -- 2024-12-15
