An electric shuttle bus crash occurred at approximately 14.50 on November 15, on the descent from Phu Phek Temple in Na Hua Bo Subdistrict, Phanna Nikhom District, Sakon Nakhon Province. Reports indicate that the shuttle bus driver lost control and veered off the road, resulting in numerous injuries and one fatality. Emergency responders, including two Advanced Life Support (ALS) teams from Phra Ajarn Fan Hospital, Na Hua Bo Subdistrict rescuers, and the Rattana Foundation, promptly arrived at the scene to assist the victims. Rescuers on arrival found that 25 individuals had sustained injuries of varying severity, while a 16-year-old girl, identified as Miss Suthida Chiwato from Na Dee Village, tragically lost her life at the scene. The crash occurred as the shuttle bus, carrying a group of temple visitors, descended from Phu Phek Temple following a large religious ceremony, the “Maha Sangkhatan Merit-Making Event.” The temple is situated on a steep and winding mountainside, which presents significant challenges for vehicles. Eyewitnesses reported that the shuttle bus was overloaded, with passengers standing due to limited seating capacity. As the vehicle navigated the steep descent, it gained excessive speed. Despite the driver’s attempts to brake, he lost control and plunged approximately 15 metres off the road. The vehicle’s front section sustained most of the damage. Emergency services transported the injured to Phanna Nikhom Hospital, with critically injured victims referred to Sakon Nakhon Provincial Hospital for treatment. Local authorities and event organisers are working to determine the precise cause of the accident and ensure that safety measures are enhanced for future events. Investigations believe that the overcrowding of the bus, combined with the steep and narrow descent, may have been contributing factors. Picture from responders. -- 2024-11-16

An incident occurred in Suwannaphum district, Roi Et province, when a group of students skipped class to go swimming. One of the students, a 13-year-old girl, drowned after slipping into a deep section of the pond while wearing her school uniform. The accident took place around 13:00 on November 14. Police Lieutenant Sommai Phetsuriya of Suwannaphum Police Station received a report of a drowning at the Nong Song Hong public pond in Sa Khu subdistrict. Rescue units were immediately dispatched, and a team of divers recovered the girl’s body within 30 minutes, found submerged 2.5 metres underwater, about 7 metres from the bank. Initial investigations revealed that five students, one boy and four girls, had left their school around 11:00 to swim at a pond approximately two Kilometres from their school. Three of the girls entered the water, playing near the shallow edge where the water was only about 70 centimetres deep. As they ventured slightly further, two of the girls stepped into a sudden drop-off they had not seen, plunging them into a deep trench. Only one of the girls was able to be pulled to safety by a friend. Sadly, the other girl, who could not swim, disappeared under the water before help could reach her. Afterward, the surviving students returned to school to inform teachers, who then contacted authorities. The drowned student was identified as Titsaya, a 13 year old student at a local school. A collision between a six-wheel truck and a school transport vehicle occurred on the morning of November 15, leaving two dead and several others injured in Pattani Province. The incident took place around 08:00 on Route 42 near Kota Bridge, Village 5, Laharn Subdistrict, Sai Buri District. The school vehicle, which was transporting students from Maikhaen Kitwit School, was parked and struck by the truck. It is believed that the truck collided with the side of the school van, with two students standing at the rear. While the damage to both vehicles was not severe, the tragedy resulted in two fatalities. The deceased were the two students stood at the back of the vehicle and were identified as Firhan Sani, a 14-year-old male student who died at the scene, and Sa-eenah Mukor, a 15-year-old female student who succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at Pattani Hospital. In addition to the fatalities, a student who was sat on the first seat inside the vehicle on the side struck, remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Pattani Hospital. Six other students suffered minor injuries and were treated and discharged. The crash site quickly became crowded with worried parents as the situation unfolded and authorities quickly used sand to cover the pool of blood on the road. Both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Pattani Governor, Pattimoh Sadeeyamu, has ordered an investigation into the cause of the accident. The Pattani Road Accident Investigation Committee is now collecting evidence and statements to determine the factors leading to the crash. The truck driver, 25-year-old Jhatthanin, claimed he was driving normally when the incident occurred. Investigators are considering the possibility that the truck driver may have briefly fallen asleep at the wheel, as the school vehicle had been parked on the roadside waiting for more students to board. Local authorities are continuing to investigate all details of the crash. Pictures from responders. -- 2024-11-16

In an incident on Koh Phangan, an overloaded pickup truck carrying a heavy load of trees overturned while attempting to climb a steep hill. Rescue services from the Koh Pha Ngan Rescue Centre received an emergency call reporting the incident. Initial reports indicate that the pickup truck, heavily laden with trees, struggled to ascend the incline due to the excessive weight. The lack of momentum led to a complete loss of control, and the vehicle rolled backwards, before ultimately flipping over and coming to rest upside down. Witnesses at the scene described the incident as “frightening,” with the truck flipping through the air before crashing back off the side of the road. Rescue personnel promptly arrived at the site and found two injured occupants trapped inside the overturned vehicle. They worked quickly to extricate the victims, providing immediate first aid before transporting them to a nearby hospital. Medical staff have since confirmed that the injuries sustained by both individuals are not serious.. Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on whether safety regulations were violated due to the truck’s excessive load. Heavy cargo is known to place additional strain on vehicles, especially on the island’s steep and winding roads. Officials are considering implementing stricter enforcement on weight limits for vehicles transporting goods across Koh Phangan to prevent similar incidents. The Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) has confiscated 2,989 grams of the category 1 drug, mephedrone, concealed within a protein powder container shipped from abroad. The operation culminated in the arrest of a Maldives national who attempted to collect the suspicious package from a transport company in Bangkok. Police Lieutenant General Panurat Lakboon, Secretary-General of the ONCB, revealed details of the seizure and arrest at a press briefing, on November 14. The ONCB’s Anti-Narcotics Division has been intensifying its efforts to track and combat drug smuggling networks. This recent investigation builds on a prior case from June 28, 2024, when authorities seized 840 grams of mephedrone hidden in coffee capsules from an international shipment originating in Poland. In that case, a Russian suspect was apprehended in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, where further searches of his residence led to the discovery of ecstasy (MDMA), cocaine, ketamine, and 300 grams of a suspicious substance. Police Lt. Gen. Panurat noted that the ONCB’s specialised anti-drug team, led by Director Prain Mekhanun, has been closely monitoring the activities of transnational drug trafficking networks attempting to introduce new narcotics into Thailand. Mephedrone, classified as a category 1 drug, produces effects similar to MDMA, and can be consumed through inhalation, injection, or encapsulation. Originally detected by the ONCB’s Drug Research and Testing Institute about five years ago, mephedrone is now strictly regulated, with rare occurrences in the country. The ONCB remains steadfast in monitoring and intercepting drug shipments from international sources, especially as traffickers continually adapt their methods to avoid detection. UPDATE Gunman Arrested in Double Murder of Myanmar Nationals by Thai Border Authorities have arrested a gunman suspected of killing two Myanmar nationals and abandoning their bodies on a roadside, in what police believe was a robbery attempt. Gunman Arrested in Double Murder of Myanmar Nationals by Thai Border Authorities have arrested a gunman suspected of killing two Myanmar nationals and abandoning their bodies on a roadside, in what police believe was a robbery attempt. Following extensive examination of surveillance footage along the route from Samut Sakhon, the area where the victims resided, police identified the two vehicles used in the incident. The victims, traveling in a group of six Myanmar nationals split between two vehicles, were found dead early this morning at approximately 04:30 on a dirt road near Pong Song Kao village, Suan Phueng District, Ratchaburi Province. Police traced the vehicles as they headed toward Tak Province and successfully intercepted them. All passengers, including the suspects, were detained, and the police investigation team from Suan Phueng is en route to bring them back for questioning. Mr. Aung San Min, 40, brother of one of the deceased, Aung San Win, arrived at Suan Phueng Police Station to identify his brother’s body. He recounted that he had received a call from his sister-in-law late at night, worried that his brother had not returned from a trip with friends and was unreachable. Using his brother’s phone tracking location, he determined he was in Suan Phueng, and upon calling, a police officer answered, confirming the tragedy. Mr. Min and his family expressed shock and suspicion, especially as one of their brother’s companions had survived, while his brother and another friend had been shot. The surviving Myanmar national, Mr. Agarn, who required translation assistance from another Myanmar friend, recounted that he and his late friend Aung San Win had been hired by three Myanmar individuals, including the suspects, to transport them to Ratchaburi for 1,000 baht upfront, with an additional 4,000 baht promised upon arrival. Though initially led to believe they would be transporting goods, they had taken two trucks from Samut Sakhon on November 13 around 20:00 with each victim driving separately. Upon arrival in Ratchaburi, the victim’s truck led, followed at a distance by Mr. Agarn’s truck. When the convoy reached a curve, the suspects in Mr. Win’s truck reportedly asked him to stop. Shortly after, Mr. Agarn heard two gunshots, which one of the suspects claimed were directed at animals. The assailants then threatened Mr. Agarn with a knife, forcing him to surrender his valuables, including a gold necklace, a smartphone, and his bank app withdrawal codes with an approximate balance of 100,000 baht. Stripped of his belongings, Mr. Agarn was ordered out of the truck and pushed into a shallow ravine with some water. Disoriented and scared, he ran through the darkness in search of help but faced difficulty due to language barriers. Eventually, he took refuge in a nearby temple where, come morning, he met a fellow Myanmar national who helped him contact his wife. Mr. Agarn expressed anger and confusion over the violent robbery, questioning why a vehicle could not have been stolen without resorting to murder. The suspects are now in police custody in Mae Sot, Tak Province, and will face formal charges as the investigation continues. Picture courtesy of Siam Rath -- 2024-11-15

Husband Fatally Stabs Wife in Jealous Rage Before Attempting Suicide In an incident fuelled by jealousy, a man allegedly stabbed his wife to death before turning the knife on himself in an attempted suicide. In an incident fuelled by jealousy, a man allegedly stabbed his wife to death before turning the knife on himself in an attempted suicide. The attack occurred early in the morning on November 14 at a plant shop in Ban Nong Waeng Yao, Nong Wua So District, Udon Thani Province. Police were alerted to the scene around 06:30 Pol. Lt. Suphattra Boonruang from Nong Wua So Police Station, along with forensic experts, medical personnel, and rescue volunteers, responded to the distress call. Upon arrival, they found the body of Ms. Wilai Phorn, 40, lying behind the shop with multiple stab wounds to her stomach, chest, and arms. Holding her body was her husband, Mr. Lam, 45, who was critically injured, having stabbed himself in the stomach and slit his throat. He was taken to Nong Wua So Hospital in severe condition. Ms. Wilai's 19-year-old daughter, Ms. Sukanya, recounted the events leading up to the tragedy. She heard her mother's cries for help and rushed out to find her stepfather attacking her mother. She tried to wrestle the knife away but was overpowered. As her mother lay bleeding, she rushed to find help and called the police. Upon returning, she found her mother unresponsive and her stepfather embracing her lifeless body, saying, "We will go together," before attempting to take his own life. Family members and close sources report that jealousy had been a recurring issue. According to Ms. Sukanya, her stepfather had grown suspicious of her mother, fearing she was involved with another man due to her frequent trips back to her hometown in Loei Province. However, these visits were to see her daughter and support family matters. Ms. Sukanya confirmed that her mother and stepfather frequently argued, and he had previously assaulted her mother out of jealousy. Ms. Wilai's mother, Mrs. Wan, 60, confirmed this history, adding that her daughter had recently been caring for her ill brother at a hospital, which required several nights away. This, she believes, exacerbated her son-in-law's suspicions. Mrs. Wan recalled her son-in-law's recent social media post hinting at possible trouble ahead, which left her with a sense of dread. The police have collected forensic evidence and Mr. Lam, currently receiving medical treatment at Udon Thani Central Hospital, will be questioned by authorities once he stabilises. A fire broke out early morning on November 15, in the parking garage of a condominium complex in Bangkok’s Chokchai 4 neighbourhood, leaving a pickup truck almost destroyed and two nearby cars damaged. The blaze is suspected to have originated from a pile of garbage near the vehicles. At approximately 00:10 officers from the Chokchai Police Station received a report of a vehicle fire at a condominium on Soi Chokchai 4, Soi 37, Lane 5, in the Lat Phrao district. Firefighters and rescue units from Lat Phrao, along with fire trucks were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered a substantial blaze in the parking area beneath the building. The flames had started in a pile of trash and quickly spread to a nearby Toyota, petrol engine pickup truck. Firefighters worked swiftly, and the fire was brought under control within 30 minutes. However, by that time, the pickup truck suffered serious damage by the flames, and two other cars, a Toyota and Honda, parked nearby had sustained fire and heat damage. Additionally, the flames had also damaged an air-conditioning compressor unit of an apartment, above the parking area. Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire began in the garbage pile, which ignited and spread to the parked vehicles. Authorities are continuing their inquiry and intend to question the pickup truck’s owner to better understand the circumstances leading to the incident. Pictures from responders. -- 2024-11-15

A high-ranking police officer, Pol. Lt. Col. Setthapong Songklod, passed away after his vehicle veered off course and collided with a house front and a utility pole while he was allegedly on a stakeout to apprehend a suspect. The incident took place on November 14, when authorities were alerted to a crash on Soi See Chai Thong 2 in Bang Kadi, Mueang District, Pathum Thani. According to Pol. Capt. Achara Kateuang-ngan of the Pak Khlong Rangsit Police Station, the officer’s vehicle, a white Toyota Wish registered in Pathum Thani, crashed into a house, knocked down a utility pole and damaged the water supply infrastructure in the area. Emergency responders and volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation arrived promptly to assist. Witnesses reported that the officer’s vehicle had started to smoke after the collision, prompting locals to swiftly help the unconscious driver out of the vehicle and use a fire extinguisher to prevent further risk. The officer, later identified as Pol. Lt. Col. Setthapong Songklod, Deputy Superintendent of Investigations at Pathum Thani City Police Station, was in critical condition and was immediately rushed to Krung Siam St. Carlos Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Eyewitness accounts describe the moments leading up to the crash. Sayan, a 36 year old shop owner nearby, recounted that the vehicle had been parked in front of his store with its engine running for approximately 20 minutes. Suddenly, the car moved onto the sidewalk, narrowly missing a female pedestrian before accelerating further down the road and violently crashing into the house and a utility pole about 100 metres away from where it was parked. Wanthanah, 58, the homeowner whose property was damaged in the crash, was inside her house at the time. She described hearing a loud crash, and upon rushing outside, she witnessed bystanders assisting the unconscious officer from his vehicle. Sources close to the investigation revealed that Pol. Lt. Col. Setthapong had been actively pursuing a case involving thefts in the inner Pathum Thani area, where he was responsible for investigations. Reports indicate he was staking out a location near Bang Kadi where the suspect was believed to reside. Authorities believe the officer may have experienced a sudden medical episode, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. Pol. Capt. Achara confirmed that an official investigation is underway. The officer’s body has been transferred to the Ministry of Justice’s Institute of Forensic Science for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Pictures from responders. -- 2024-11-15
