Picture from responders. A 69-year-old curry shop owner was shot dead while unloading food to open his shop in Ratchaburi province early morning on 21 February. His devastated daughter, who witnessed the horrifying incident, was in shock. At approximately 04:25, Pol. Lt. Charoon Mahaphon of Pak Tho Police Station received a report of a fatal shooting at a curry shop in Yang Hak sub-district, Pak Tho district, Ratchaburi province. He arrived at the scene with senior officers, forensic investigators, and rescue personnel. The crime scene was a single-storey house with a food shop at the front, located along the roadside. The victim, identified as Mr. Wiwat aged 69, was found lying on his back in a pool of blood. A preliminary examination revealed that he had suffered a fatal gunshot wound, with a single round hitting his right back and exiting through his neck. A spent shell was found nearby and collected as evidence. The victim’s daughter, Ms. Prakaideun aged 43, described the horrifying moment. She and her father had left home as usual at around 04:00, driving a Toyota Fortuner to their shop, about 4 kilometres away, to prepare for the morning rush. Upon arriving, they began unloading food when a single gunshot rang out. Her father collapsed instantly. In panic, she ran inside the shop to hide and called her partner for help. She stated that the area was extremely dark at night, with no streetlights, and she did not see the gunman. The motive remains unclear. Investigators have reviewed CCTV footage from nearby locations. The footage shows the victim arriving at the shop at 04:12, unloading items from his car. At 04:20, an unidentified male figure is seen crossing the road from the opposite side before quickly fleeing the scene. Later that evening, officers from Pak Tho Police Station arrested the suspect, Mr. Liang 72, at his home in Nong Ya Plong district, Phetchaburi. The arrest followed an investigation that revealed ongoing tensions between the victim and the suspect, both of whom had worked as land brokers. Police recovered a gun believed to have been used in the attack, along with the clothing the suspect was wearing at the time of the shooting. Forensic officers were also called in to check for gunshot residue on the suspect’s hands and clothing. During questioning, Mr. Liang confessed to the crime, stating that he had harboured resentment against the victim for nearly a year. According to his statement, he had introduced a potential buyer to Mr. Wiwat in early 2024 for a land deal exceeding 100 rai. However, he later discovered that the sale had gone through without his involvement, and the victim had allegedly kept the entire commission, believed to be worth millions of baht, for himself. Mr. Liang claimed that he had confronted the victim about the matter, but was met with dismissive remarks. Seeing the victim’s apparent newfound wealth, including the purchase of a new car, intensified his anger. After much deliberation, he took his gun and walked nearly four kilometres to the victim’s shop, where he waited in ambush. When Mr. Wiwat arrived, Mr. Liang crossed the street and fired a single shot before fleeing the scene. Police have charged Mr. Liang with illegal possession of a firearm, carrying a firearm in public without a permit, discharging a firearm in a public area without justification, and murder. He has admitted to all charges. -- 2025-02-22

UPDATE Wild Elephant Electrocuted: Authorities Launch Investigation Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) has launched an urgent investigation following the electrocution of a wild elephant in Chachoengsao province. A post-mortem examination confirmed burn marks and signs of sudden cardiac arrest, prompting authorities to track down those responsible. UPDATE Wild Elephant Electrocuted: Authorities Launch Investigation Picture courtesy of DNP Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) has launched an urgent investigation following the electrocution of a wild elephant in Chachoengsao province. A post-mortem examination confirmed burn marks and signs of sudden cardiac arrest, prompting authorities to track down those responsible. The male elephant, weighing 6,060 kilograms and standing 3.1 metres tall, was discovered on 20 February in Ban Thammarat, Klong Takrao subdistrict, Tha Takiap district—outside the Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary. The elephant had a single left tusk, measuring 110 cm in length along the outer curve and 38 cm in circumference at the base. Upon receiving the report, Mr. Kongkiat Temthamman, Director of Protected Areas Office 2 (Si Racha), dispatched a rapid response team from Chonburi, a military unit from Khao Yai Special Task Force, and wildlife sanctuary officers to investigate. A team of veterinarians, led by Dr. Siriwich Supanake from the Wildlife Conservation Division, conducted an autopsy at Khao Yai Forest Protection Unit in Bo Thong district, Chonburi. The examination revealed burn marks beneath the trunk and on the roof of the mouth, along with fluid accumulation around the heart and internal bleeding, consistent with electrocution-induced cardiac arrest. The elephant’s stomach contents included fibrous plant material with a molasses-like scent, suspected to be sugarcane, suggesting the animal had been foraging near agricultural land before its death. Vital organs, including the liver, spleen, and kidneys, appeared normal. Officials have secured the elephant’s tusk at the Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary and buried the remains following conservation protocols. Authorities have also filed an official police report at Bo Thong Police Station and pledged to identify those responsible. The DNP is now working with local agencies to prevent further incidents and ensure stricter protections for wild elephants venturing outside protected areas. -- 2025-02-22

The incident took place at approximately 11:30 on 21st February near a PTT petrol station on the Kalasin–Somdet road in the Phon Thong area. According to reports from local police, Lieutenant Colonel Wipakorn Buaon received an emergency call about the incident and quickly coordinated with the Phon Thong fire department and local rescue units to respond to the scene. Upon arrival, emergency crews found a Toyota car, registration from Bangkok, severely damaged after colliding with a tree. Flames were rapidly spreading, engulfing the vehicle entirely. Firefighters worked for over 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze. Fortunately, local residents witnessed the crash and acted swiftly to rescue the driver before the fire could them. The injured woman, identified as Ananya Raiprasong, was pulled from the vehicle but sustained severe injuries, including fractures to both legs and various other bodily injuries. Medics from Kalasin Hospital provided first aid at the scene before transporting her to the hospital for further treatment. Abdulkarim Khan, a 54-year-old local meat seller who helped in the rescue, described the chaotic moment: “I heard a loud noise and saw the car speeding before it crashed into the tree. When I noticed smoke and flames starting to rise from beneath the car, I ran to help along with others in the area. We managed to get her out just in time.” Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident and reviewing CCTV footage from the area. Picture from responders. A 54-year-old man drowned in a coconut orchard canal in Samut Songkhram after suffering an asthma attack while fishing. The incident occurred in the Tha Kha subdistrict of Amphawa. Authorities were alerted to the scene after receiving reports of a drowning. Police officers from Amphawa Police Station, led by Lieutenant Colonel Natthaphat Channarong, along with emergency responders and a medical examiner from Amphawa Hospital, arrived to investigate. The victim, identified as Mr. Thitiphon, was found lying face down in the water. He was wearing a red t-shirt and shorts and had likely been deceased for approximately three hours. His red-and-black Honda Wave motorcycle was discovered parked nearby. His son, Mr. Phisit 28, was present at the scene to provide information to the authorities. According to Mr. Phisit, his father worked as a toddy palm harvester and supplemented his income by fishing to sell at the local market. He also had a history of asthma. He had left home around 13:30 on 21 February, informing his family that he would be fishing in the area, known for its abundant fish. When he failed to return for several hours, the family became concerned. Later, they received a phone call informing them that he had drowned. Mr. Pichai 61, a local resident who discovered the body, stated that he initially assumed the man was searching for shrimp in the water. However, after observing him in the same position for an unusually long time, he realised something was wrong and found that the man had drowned. Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim had parked his motorcycle near the road before walking approximately 250 metres into the orchard to cast his fishing net. It is believed that he suffered an asthma attack and collapsed and fell into the water. The body has been sent to the forensic department at Ratchaburi Hospital for further examination, and authorities will continue their investigation into the exact cause of death. -- 2025-02-22

Pictures from responds. A truck carrying nitric acid overturned near the Bang Bua Thong interchange, emitting hazardous vapours and prompting an emergency response. The six-wheeled chemical transport truck driver, lost control and overturned on the Western Ring Road, along the elevated Highway 345, while heading towards Pathum Thani on the morning of 21st February. The crash resulted in a leak of nitric acid, releasing thick orange fumes and a sharp, pungent odour that spread across the roadway. Emergency services were alerted at approximately 09:45 and dispatched firefighters from Lahan Municipality along with specialist rescue teams to contain the spill. Concerned motorists reported the fumes seeping into their vehicles, prompting authorities to close the affected section of the road to prevent further exposure. The overturned vehicle, a Hino box truck registered in Nakhon Pathom, had been transporting four 1,000-litre containers of nitric acid from Samut Sakhon to Pathum Thani. The impact of the crash caused one of the containers to rupture, with the acid corroding the truck’s metal frame and releasing the orange vapours. Firefighters used water spray to suppress the vapours and prevent further hazards before removing the damaged truck and its remaining chemical cargo. The operation was completed without any reported injuries. Authorities are now investigating the cause of the crash and reviewing safety measures for the transportation of hazardous materials. -- 2025-02-22

Picture from responders. An incident occurred in the early hours of February 21, when a fire in a rental room claimed the life of a 59-year-old man in Doi Saket District, Chiang Mai. Emergency services were alerted to the fire at approximately 00:10 and quickly dispatched firefighters to contain the blaze, which was threatening adjacent units. Upon arrival at the scene, responders found the fire raging within the rented room located in Moo 6, Pa Pong Subdistrict. After approximately 20 minutes of firefighting efforts, the flames were extinguished. However, when authorities attempted to enter the locked room, they discovered the body of the victim, later identified as Mr. Anan, who was found charred inside. Preliminary investigations indicated that the fire might have been caused by an electrical short circuit. The police, alongside forensic officials, are conducting a thorough examination of the site to determine the exact cause of the fire. The remains of an electrical pot near a refrigerator was discovered, and investigators suspect it could have sparked the initial flames, igniting nearby clothing and other materials within the room. Surveillance footage reviewed by local police revealed that Mr. Anan had parked his yellow passenger vehicle outside his rental room around 22:06 the previous night before entering alone. Neighbours reported that the lights in his room were off shortly thereafter, only for a fire to erupt around midnight. Investigators found no evidence of a struggle or foul play, ruling out the possibility of homicide. Authorities await further results from the autopsy to confirm the cause of death, but it appears the victim succumbed to smoke inhalation and burns. The family of Mr. Anan has been consulted. -- 2025-02-22

Picture from responders A crash in Samut Prakan has resulted in the death of a female motorcycle passenger and serious injuries to her husband after a songthaew driver, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, collided with their motorcycle. The incident occurred on the morning of 21 February, near Paolo Hospital in Phra Samut Chedi district. Police were alerted to the scene at approximately 10:30 where a blue Isuzu songthaew, operated by a 54-year-old driver, Mr. Narinth was involved in a collision with a Honda Wave 100 motorcycle, which was being ridden by a couple. The impact caused the motorcyclist to lose control, resulting in Mr. Soleap Hing, a Cambodian national, sustaining injuries, while his wife, Miss Sory Sai, lost her life when she fell under the wheels and was run over. Emergency responders transported both individuals to Paolo Hospital, where Miss Sory Sai was pronounced dead upon arrival. Upon arrival at the crash scene, police conducted an investigation and collected evidence, including reviewing CCTV footage. Mr. Narinth was found to be incoherent, leading officers to administer an alcohol breath test, which revealed a blood alcohol level above the legal. As a result, he was taken into custody and faces serious charges, including driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in injury and death. Mr. Narinth could face a prison sentence of three to ten years, along with fines ranging from 60,000 to 200,000 baht, and the revocation of his driving license. The specific charges against him include: 1. Operating a public vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, resulting in injury and death. 2. Driving while intoxicated, causing the death of another. 3. Reckless driving leading to fatal consequences. Witnesses and fellow employees recounted the events leading up to the collision. Mr. Nithinart, the fare collector on the songthaew, stated that he had urged the driver to be cautious as they had already been involved in a near-miss with another motorcycle the previous day. He expressed concern over the speed at which Mr. Narinth was driving, noting that several passengers had requested to disembark early due to the reckless driving. In a heartfelt statement, Mr. Nithinart lamented the fate of Miss Sory Sai, saying, “I feel sorry for the woman who was crushed under the vehicle. With public transport drivers driving like this, who would want to use their services again? I urge drivers to adhere to normal driving speeds and not rush unnecessarily. Safety should always come first.” -- 2025-02-22

Picture courtesy of CH7. A 40-year-old man lost his life after stabbing himself multiple times before leaping from the seventh floor of a condominium in Samut Prakan. His wife believes he had been haunted by visions of the guardian spirit of his old motorbike, which he had recently sold. The incident occurred at a condominium complex in Soi Dan Samrong 62, Samrong Nuea Subdistrict, Mueang Samut Prakan District. Officers from Samrong Nuea Police Station, along with forensic investigators and rescue personnel from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, responded to reports of a fatal jump. Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered the lifeless body of Mr. Weerayut, 40, lying on his back in the condominium courtyard. He was shirtless and wearing shorts, with head trauma and multiple fractures in his arms and legs. Further examination revealed several stab wounds to his chest, inflicted with a sharp object. Authorities immediately cordoned off the area to conduct an investigation. A search of the victim’s apartment uncovered bloodstains near the entrance and a bloodied fruit knife, suspected to have been used in the self-inflicted stabbing. CCTV footage showed the deceased pacing in and out of his room alone before the fatal plunge. Ms. Chanjira, a witness, recounted the harrowing moment she saw the man fall. “I was sitting with my child when I suddenly saw him plummet right in front of me. I was in shock and immediately ran to alert the building staff. I didn’t see whether he jumped or accidentally fell,” she said. Meanwhile, the victim’s younger sister, known as “Phu,” tearfully stated that her brother had no history of serious conflicts with his wife or anyone else. “He was always hardworking and quiet. He had been saving up and had even bought a second condo unit, which he nearly finished paying off. I don’t believe he would have taken his own life,” she added. Police Colonel Wiroj Tattaso, Superintendent of Samrong Nuea Police Station, disclosed that after speaking with the deceased’s wife, she revealed that her husband had recently sold his old motorcycle. Soon after, he began experiencing distressing dreams in which the guardian spirit of the bike, known as “Mae Ya Nang,” appeared to him in anger. These dreams deeply affected the man, leading him to believe he had been cursed. His mental health reportedly deteriorated, and he became withdrawn. Just two days prior to the incident, on February 19, he had sought medical treatment for depression. However, his family did not expect him to take such drastic action. Authorities suspect that the victim stabbed himself inside his apartment before crossing to the newly purchased unit opposite his own, which lacked window security bars, and jumping. However, a detailed forensic examination is still pending to confirm the exact sequence of events. f you or anyone you know is in emotional distress, please contact the Samaritans of Thailand 24-hour hotline: 02 713 6791 (English), 02 713 6793 (Thai) or the Thai Mental Health Hotline at 1323 (Thai). Gas Cylinder Truck Catches Fire at LPG Filling Plant, Over 100 Cylinders Involved A dramatic fire broke out at an LPG filling plant in Nakhon Phanom, destroying over 100 gas cylinders and sending residents fleeing in panic. Picture from responders. A dramatic fire broke out at an LPG filling plant in Nakhon Phanom, destroying over 100 gas cylinders and sending residents fleeing in panic. Firefighters battled for over an hour to contain the blaze, which erupted dangerously close to a gas station. The incident occurred in the early hours of 21 February at a privately owned LPG bottling facility in Ban Phon Paeng, Phum Kae subdistrict, Na Kae district. The plant, located on the That Phanom–Na Kae highway, features an LPG station at the front and a storage area for gas cylinders at the rear. Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of a fire engulfing a pickup truck and a six-wheeled gas transport truck, both loaded with LPG cylinders. The fire rapidly spread, consuming the vehicles just 20 metres from the bottling plant and in close proximity to a public LPG station. Mr Yongchai Rakphol, the President of Phum Kae Subdistrict Administrative Organisation (SAO), coordinated with emergency responders from neighbouring municipalities. Firefighters deployed multiple trucks, working for more than an hour to extinguish the flames. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. However, two vehicles and over 100 gas cylinders were destroyed. Authorities from Na Kae Police Station have launched an investigation in collaboration with forensic experts. Preliminary findings suggest the fire first originated at the pickup truck, which was reported to be in poor condition, but is unclear if the fire was from the pickup truck itself or a leak from the cylinders it was carrying. Following the incident, local authorities have pledged to implement stricter safety measures to prevent similar occurrences. Mr Yongchai confirmed that swift action by emergency services prevented the fire from spreading to the nearby gas station. -- 2025-02-22

Pictures from responders A courageous bystander was swept away, after jumping into a fast-flowing canal to rescue victims of a road crash in Saraburi. The incident occurred near the Chao Pho Muen Ram Bridge in Nong Khae District, where a saloon car and a pickup truck collided and plunged into the Raphiphat Canal. Emergency services, including police from Nong Khae Police Station, rescue teams from Sawang Rattanatrai Thammasathan Saraburi, the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, and the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, were alerted to the accident at approximately 17:25 on 20 February. Eyewitnesses reported that the crash involved a lime-green Mitsubishi Mirage and a silver Toyota Vigo pickup truck, both plunging into the canal and were swept away by the canal’s strong currents. As the vehicles floated downstream, a local man, identified as Mr. Natthaphon Samtia, 38, jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue the occupants. According to Ms. Ice, the driver of the saloon car, she struggled to open the car door after it entered the water. Mr. Natthaphon reached her and helped pull her out before asking if she could swim. When she said no, he guided her to a clump of grass at the water’s edge to hold onto before diving back into the canal to assist the driver of the pickup truck. However, due to the strong current and the sheer effort required for the rescue, Mr. Natthaphon appeared to become exhausted and was swept away, disappearing beneath the water. Rescue workers arrived and managed to retrieve the pickup truck driver and transported him to Nong Khae Hospital for medical attention. However, the vehicle itself was lost to the water. Search teams, including divers and a flat-bottomed boat, were immediately deployed to locate Mr. Natthaphon, but efforts have been hampered by the powerful current. Mr. Natthaphon’s mother, Mrs. Wanna 60, described her son as someone who had always been willing to help others, whether he knew them or not. She also revealed that he had not been in good health recently. Mr. Phadungkiat, an administrator of the Nong Khae Mee Dee Facebook page, was among the first to arrive at the scene after hearing reports of the crash. He described how the Mitsubishi Mirage had been descending the bridge when it was struck by the Toyota Vigo, causing both vehicles to lose control and plunge into the canal. Another rescuer, Mr. Anucha Ditbanjong, 23, described how he jumped into the canal with two others, carrying a rock to break the pickup truck’s window and free the driver. He managed to pull the pickup truck driver to safety. Authorities will continue to search for Mr. Natthaphon, until the body is found. -- 2025-02-21

Pictures from responders. A Phuket-Phatthalung bus driver lost control and rolled on its side, at the Khao Po Curve in Phang Nga, injuring multiple passengers, including a critically injured three-year-old child. At approximately 18:00 on 20th February, officers from Takua Thung Police Station received a report of a public transport vehicle crash, resulting in multiple injuries. Emergency responders, including rescue teams from Wat Kao Charoentham, Phu Nga EMS, and the Phang Nga Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Unit, were dispatched to the scene. The crash occurred on Phetkasem Road in Moo 5, Krasom Subdistrict, Takua Thung District, Phang Nga Province. Upon arrival, responders found a pink Phuket-Phatthalung bus, registered in Trang, lying on its side. The front windscreen was shattered, and skid marks indicated the vehicle had lost control, colliding with a roadside tree stump before rolling onto its side. The rear of the bus had also struck a power pole. A total of 11 people were injured, with a three-year-old boy suffering severe injuries. He was immediately transported to Phang Nga Hospital for emergency treatment. Preliminary investigations revealed that the bus had departed from Phuket, heading towards Phatthalung. At the time of the crash, rain had made the road surface slippery. Authorities suspect that the combination of wet conditions and excessive speed caused the driver to lose control, leading to the vehicle skidding off the road. Police have launched an investigation, gathering evidence and interviewing both the driver and passengers to determine the exact cause of the crash and any legal implications. -- 2025-02-21 Video courtesy of Phuketinsta. -4880382247977712059.mp4
