A disabled man set himself on fire before jumping from a bridge into the Noi River in Sing Buri province, claiming he was following instructions from Lord Shiva. Locals, however, suspect that drug-induced hallucinations may have influenced his actions. At 10:40 on October 12, police from Khaibungrachan Police Station responded to an emergency at the Noi River bridge in Moo 6, Tha Kham Subdistrict, Khaibungrachan District. Upon arrival, they found bystanders in boats attempting to rescue the man, who had jumped into the river but was resisting help. Eventually, rescuers managed to bring him to shore safely. The man, identified as Mr. Chalit (last name withheld), has a prosthetic leg, which detached and floated away during the incident. The Good Samaritan who rescued him retrieved the prosthetic leg as well. Mr. Chalit, who lives in Tha Kham, suffered burn injuries from setting himself on fire before his jump. According to witnesses, Mr. Chalit claimed that his actions were prompted by a command from Lord Shiva, whom he worships. However, locals believe his behaviour was likely influenced by drugs, causing him to become delusional and set himself on fire. Sing Buri rescue workers provided initial medical assistance and transported him to Khaibungrachan Hospital for further treatment. Police are continuing their investigation into the incident and are yet to confirm whether Mr. Chalit was under the influence of drugs, as the results of toxicology tests were not yet available. A government official was apprehended on October 12, by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) after evading capture for allegedly embezzling over 10 million baht in public funds. The suspect, Pranchai, also known as Paripreecha, 36, denied all charges upon arrest. On August 19, 2024, the Sikiu Provincial Court issued an arrest warrant for Pranchai for multiple offenses, including nighttime theft, theft of government property, and unauthorised access to protected computer data. The CIB’s Crime Suppression Division (CSD) tracked him down to a market in Nong Khai Province, where he was arrested. According to investigators, Pranchai, an official responsible for budget disbursement, exploited his position to withdraw large sums of money monthly, sometimes siphoning off a million baht. The thefts occurred over a period from mid-2023 to July 2024, when an internal investigation revealed the disappearance of over 10 million baht. Before fleeing, The investigation revealed that Pranchai had been using more than 10 mule accounts and changing phone numbers weekly to evade detection. He fled to the Mukdahan border and attempted to cross into Laos multiple times using a fake passport. After learning that authorities were closing in, he moved to Nong Khai, preparing for another escape to Laos. A coordinated operation between the CSD and Nong Khai police led to his capture at a local market just as his wife attempted to bring him cash. Although Pranchai denied all allegations and refused to cooperate during initial questioning, he was taken into custody and transferred to Khlong Phai Police Station for further legal proceedings. Pranchai continues to deny all charges, and the investigation is ongoing. Picture from CSD. -- 2024-10-13

Authorities in Yala province are assessing the damage after heavy rains triggered flash floods in Betong and Than To districts, particularly affecting Ayeryarwaddy Subdistrict. Two houses were washed away, claiming the life of a 66-year-old man, while three other residents survived by clinging to a tree. On the evening of October 11, continuous heavy rainfall caused severe flooding and landslides in Ayeryarwaddy Subdistrict. The flash floods swept away homes along the riverbank, leading to the disappearance of a 66-year-old man, who was later found dead near his home. Landslides also occurred at the base of a hill, causing road collapses and knocking down power poles. Village head Ahmad Yama of Ayeryarwaddy’s Village 4 reported that at 20:00 he and other villagers inspected the water levels in the Tamarind River area. They discovered landslides blocking roads and two houses washed away by the torrents. Three villagers clung to trees and survived, but one, identified as Korder Luebachi, was swept away. His body was found later, while six other family members managed to escape and are now staying with relatives. In Maewat Subdistrict, Than To District, police and local officials assisted residents after flash floods struck the area, affecting households. Water levels have since receded, and cleanup efforts are underway. The Meteorological Department has warned that southern Thailand will continue to experience heavy rain, particularly on the Gulf Coast, with the risk of flash floods, landslides, and strong winds in stormy areas. In a surprising twist, a local farmer in Aranyaprathet, Sa Kaeo province, on October 12, found that the cause of her disappearing chickens was not theft, but a large python. The revelation came after she invested in surveillance cameras to catch the supposed thief in action. Sixty-two-year-old Wipha Saiklai, who resides at 239 Moo 6, Pa Rai Subdistrict, has been raising chickens and geese in a coop behind her house. Over several weeks, she noticed a disturbing trend: her chickens were mysteriously vanishing, one at a time. Initially, she suspected that someone was sneaking in to steal them. To get to the bottom of the mystery, Wipha decided to install security cameras around her property. However, the footage revealed an unexpected culprit, a large python slithering through the trees near the coop. Alarmed by the commotion, her geese were seen honking loudly, alerting her to the snake’s presence. This evidence led Wipha to conclude that her missing chickens were not the work of a thief, but rather the work of the massive python. Upon receiving a report about the situation, officials from the Aranyaprathet Snake Rescue Team promptly arrived to assist. Team leader Boontham Anusinth stated that upon inspection, they found the python, measuring approximately 3-4 metres in length, coiled around a tree next to the chicken coop. Using specialised equipment, the team worked carefully to capture the snake, which displayed aggressive behaviour and preparing to bite as they approached. After a challenging effort, they successfully subdued the python and placed it in a sack for relocation back to its natural habitat. Picture courtesy of ThaiRath -- 2024-10-13

A 30-year-old woman tragically fell from the fifth floor of a well-known shopping mall in the Lat Phrao area of Bangkok, with investigators discovering mysterious footprints near the balcony railing. Authorities are urgently reviewing CCTV footage to determine the true cause of the incident. On October 12 at around 21:30, Pol. Capt. Anucha Pleansamai, Deputy Inspector of Phahon Yothin Police Station, received a report of a person falling from a height inside the mall located in Soi Lat Phrao 1, Chom Phon, Chatuchak district. Investigators rushed to the scene along with forensic officers, a medical examiner from the Police General Hospital, and a rescue team from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation. The incident occurred on the B floor, in the IT and food court zone, near the central escalator. The victim, identified as Ms. Phattaraporn Phutthaphonpot, 30, was found lying face-up, wearing a white long-sleeved jacket and a brown pleated skirt. She had scrapes on her left thigh, and her neck and right leg were visibly broken. Building staff quickly erected red tents to shield the scene from public view and prevent panic among shoppers. Despite immediate attempts at CPR by rescuers, Ms. Phattaraporn succumbed to her injuries shortly after. Investigators have since discovered unexplained footprints near the balcony railing on the fifth floor, where the fall occurred. Authorities are urgently reviewing footage from the mall’s CCTV system to piece together the exact events that led to the tragedy. A 66-year-old Trang resident, Mr. Suthep (surname withheld), has confessed to shooting his neighbour, Mr. Phongsak (surname withheld), a 56-year-old retired civil servant from the Ministry of Public Health, following a dispute. The incident, which occurred on October 11, in the Ko Klang Subdistrict of Mueang District, Trang Province, left Mr. Phongsak with serious injuries. Fortunately, he is now in stable condition after receiving medical attention. According to Mr. Suthep, the argument arose when he asked his neighbour to stop burning garbage, as the smoke was affecting his asthma. The situation quickly escalated when Mr. Phongsak allegedly responded with an offensive comment, saying, “Are you going to die?” and brandished a machete. Following the shooting, Mr. Suthep fled the scene but later coordinated with family members and his lawyer to turn himself in at Trang City Police Station on October 12. He handed over the revolver used in the incident and was questioned by police for over two hours. During the interrogation, Mr. Suthep admitted to the shooting, citing long-standing tensions with his neighbour. Police have charged Mr. Suthep with attempted murder. Although the charge is serious, investigators did not oppose bail, and Mr. Suthep has applied for release while awaiting trial. He will fight the case through legal proceedings.
