The cool season has arrived early in Chiang Mai, with temperatures dropping to 9°C at Doi Inthanon. In anticipation of the 2024 tourist season, the head of Doi Inthanon National Park has announced the opening of two new “unseen” attractions for the first time. Visitors will be able to explore the beauty of Pha Ngaem Luang and Ban Mae Aeb Nai, offering natural and cultural experiences, including scenic terraced rice fields and waterfalls. According to Mr. Kriengkrai Chaiyaspecial, the head of Doi Inthanon National Park, these new sites will offer unique travel experiences for visitors. The first spot, Pha Ngaem Luang, also known as the “Two-Season Cliff” in Mae Wang district, is a round-trip nature trail about 5 kilometres long. Guided by local communities who are dedicated to preserving the environment, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy stunning views and learn about forest conservation efforts, particularly in fire prevention. The trail is similar to the popular Kew Mae Pan route and features the beautiful red rhododendron flowers. The second destination, Ban Mae Aeb Nai, offers a cultural journey where visitors can experience traditional Karen ways of life, including their agricultural practices. Visitors can take a day trip to explore the picturesque landscape of terraced rice fields and waterfalls. This attraction will limit the number of tourists to small groups in order to preserve the natural environment and minimize the impact on local communities. Tourists are invited to prepare for these “unseen” locations as they open to the public for the first time. Some areas will have restricted access to protect the environment and reduce the impact on the delicate ecosystem. This morning, Doi Inthanon recorded a low of 9°C at the summit, while Kew Mae Pan viewpoint, known for its sunrise and sea of mist, measured 12°C. At the Doi Inthanon National Park office at kilometre 31, the temperature was a comfortable 16°C. For those who love the cold, the early arrival of winter promises even cooler temperatures in the coming days. However, scattered rain is still falling, with 32 mm of rainfall recorded at Kew Mae Pan, 28 mm at the summit, and 25 mm at Mae Tia station. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. -- 2024-10-13

A former insurance agent was arrested on October 12 for defrauding an abbot of more than 100,000 baht. The woman, identified as Ms. Wanna (surname withheld), 34, from Songkhla, confessed to using the money for personal gain. The arrest was carried out by the Central Investigation Bureau, following orders from Police Lieutenant General Jiraphob Phuridech, Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau. The suspect was apprehended at a rented house in Bang Klam district, Songkhla, by officers led by Police Captain Thanakarn Uchanaratsamee. The warrant for her arrest was issued by Thung Song Provincial Court for charges of fraud, following an incident that took place in April 2023. Ms. Wanna approached the abbot of a temple in Nakhon Si Thammarat, posing as a representative of a major insurance company. She convinced the abbot to purchase life insurance for his mother, promising coverage for five years, with an annual premium of 115,560 baht. Trusting her, the abbot paid the premium in cash, which was recorded on a voice clip. When the abbot’s mother fell ill with cancer and attempted to claim the insurance, the company revealed that no policy had been issued. Further investigation by the company showed that Ms. Wanna had been dismissed as an agent in April 2023, after collecting the abbot’s money without forwarding it to the company. As a result, no policy was ever registered. The abbot reported the case to the Thung Yai Police Station, leading to a police investigation that tracked Ms. Wanna to a rented house in Songkhla, where she was eventually arrested. She admitted to the crime, stating that she had used the funds for personal expenses, and accepted the consequences of her actions. Ms. Wanna has been handed over to investigators at Thung Yai Police Station, where legal proceedings will continue. Picture courtesy of ThaiRath. -- 2024-10-13

A man has been arrested in Chumphon province for allegedly abusing his disabled sister and three children in a shocking incident that took place on October 11. The suspect, identified as Chai (pseudonym), was reportedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the abuse. The village head, Somphun Suwan, was alerted to the situation by Chai’s older brother, who could no longer endure Chai’s violent behavior. The incident occurred at their home in Songpinong subdistrict, Thasae district. Somphun immediately coordinated with the 25th Infantry Regiment’s special task force and local officials to investigate. When authorities arrived, they found Chai sitting outside the house, calmly denying any serious wrongdoing. He claimed he had only used mild physical punishment on his children and that his sister, who is disabled, had accidentally injured herself by slipping in the bathroom. However, the scene inside the home told a different story. Chai’s 12-year-old son and six-year-old twins were found huddled together, visibly exhausted and frightened. His 30-year-old sister, who suffers from a brain impairment that prevents her from walking, was found with a serious injury. Blood was flowing from her right ear, and she was immediately rushed to Thasae Hospital for treatment. A drug test conducted on Chai revealed methamphetamine in his system. Police Lieutenant Colonel Wichit Samanyamuang, Sub-Inspector of Sawi Police Station, and other local authorities, including Arunee Sombunrat, Deputy Chief of Songpinong Subdistrict, and Nuanwan Watsanit, a psychologist from Chumphon’s child and family shelter, were brought in to assist with the investigation. Chai was taken into custody for further questioning, while social services placed the children under temporary care. Legal proceedings are expected to follow. Chai’s older brother expressed deep distress over his sibling’s behavior, blaming Chai’s addiction to methamphetamine (yaba) and alcohol for the escalating violence. According to the brother, Chai had frequently beaten his children and severely assaulted their disabled sister, which resulted in her ear injury. He believed the outburst stemmed from a misunderstanding regarding a 10,000-baht government aid, which Chai falsely accused him of taking. Chai’s 12-year-old son also shared the trauma they endured, revealing that their father’s temper had worsened recently, with daily beatings becoming a norm. The child stated that he and his siblings were often slapped and kicked. He described a recent incident where Chai, in a rage, attacked their aunt, causing her ear to bleed. The case is under ongoing investigation, with police working to ensure the safety of the victims and to bring the perpetrator to justice. Picture and story source The Thaiger -- 2024-10-13

The Phothong 191 radio centre in Sisaket Province received a report of a serious car collision on Highway 226 between Sisaket and Uthumphon Phisai on the evening of October 11. The accident occurred near the 13-14 km marker between Ban Ta Khet and Nong Lung villages. A car had veered off the road after swerving to avoid a pickup truck that had suddenly cut in front of it, crashing into ongoing construction works on the road median. Local authorities and emergency services were dispatched to the scene. At the time of the accident, the road was under construction, reducing the four-lane highway to just one lane in each direction. Although workers were in the process of installing street lights, visibility was still limited. The white Toyota involved in the crash had been carrying four passengers, with two sustaining serious injuries, a 1 year 5 month old boy and his mother who had both been thrown from the vehicle on impact. The driver, later identified as Police Captain Duangdao Kamsri from Nong Bua Lamphu Police Station, was returning home to Sisaket for a weekend break. While emergency responders arrived at the scene, Captain Duangdao was seen cradling his injured infant son, tears streaming down his face. He repeatedly called out his son’s name, “Khun, Khun, don’t fall asleep, talk to Daddy,” as he attempted to stop the bleeding from his son’s head wound using tissue paper. His grief and desperation were palpable as he anxiously awaited medical help. Medical personnel from the nearby Taet Subdistrict Health Promotion Hospital and Uthumphon Phisai Hospital arrived shortly after. They provided first aid and rushed the injured mother and child to Uthumphon Phisai Hospital for further treatment. Fortunately, both are now in stable condition but will require an extended recovery period. Initial investigations revealed that the car had been traveling from Sisaket city when a pickup truck overtook it and abruptly cut in front, causing the driver to swerve. The driver lost control, spun, and collided with the median’s construction site before coming to rest on the opposite side of the road. Authorities believe poor lighting at the construction zone may have contributed to the accident, and both drivers involved will be interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation. Legal actions will follow accordingly. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-12

Mentally Unstable Woman Attacks Ex-Boyfriend with Acid, Injures His 8-Year-Old Daughter The incident occurred in Samut Prakan, when a man was attacked by his mentally unstable ex-girlfriend, who threw acid on him outside his bathroom. The incident occurred in Samut Prakan, during the early hours of October 12, when a 38-year-old man was attacked by his mentally unstable ex-girlfriend, who threw acid on him outside his bathroom. The attack also injured his 8-year-old daughter, who was caught in the crossfire. Police from the Samut Prakan City Station received the emergency call at around 00:05, reporting that a man had been doused with acid in a home in Bang Mueang, Mueang District. Rescue workers arrived at the two-story house to find the man suffering from severe acid burns on both his thighs and feet. His young daughter also had burns on both ankles. Both victims were given first aid and rushed to Paolo Hospital in Samut Prakan. The scene was chaotic, with a pungent odor of acid in the air, and evidence of damage from the corrosive liquid, including melted clothing and burn marks on the floor and a fan. Authorities quickly learned that the perpetrator was the man’s ex-girlfriend, with whom he had recently ended a one-year relationship. She fled the scene to a nearby rental home after the attack. The victim recounted that he was taking a shower when his ex-girlfriend suddenly entered and threw a liquid on him, which he initially thought was water. However, the intense burning sensation made it clear it was acid. His daughter, who was nearby, was also splashed with the liquid. His mother and 16-year-old nephew rushed to help and called the authorities. The man explained that the breakup occurred due to her frequent violent outbursts, during which she would often destroy property. Although they had repeatedly argued and involved the police, no action was taken, as the woman was receiving treatment as a psychiatric patient. When contacted by police, the woman claimed she had been regularly abused by the victim, but authorities were skeptical, as she had a history of violence against him. She refused to surrender, saying she feared being harmed and would only turn herself in on her own terms. Police are now gathering evidence and preparing an arrest warrant to apprehend her if she fails to voluntarily surrender. The investigation is ongoing as authorities proceed with legal action. 41-Year-Old Mother Ends Her Life Alongside Her Infant Son: Kamphaeng Phet A 41-year-old mother, overwhelmed by various anxieties, took the opportunity while her husband and other children were asleep to leave the house with her two-month-old son. She walked to a nearby pond, where she tragically ended both their lives. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1340484-41-year-old-mother-ends-her-life-alongside-her-infant-son kamphaeng-phet/ -
In a heart-wrenching incident, a 41-year-old mother, overwhelmed by various anxieties, took the opportunity while her husband and other children were asleep to leave the house with her two-month-old son. She walked to a nearby pond, where she tragically ended both their lives. Her devastated husband found their son’s body floating in the water and immediately jumped in to retrieve him, but it was too late. At approximately 07:30 on October 11, Pol. Lt. Kuekrit Phanthumat, an investigator from Pang Sila Thong Police Station, Kamphaeng Phet Province, received a report of a mother committing suicide with her infant son near a pond close to their home in Ban Khlong Manow, Village 12, Hin Dat Subdistrict, Pang Sila Thong District. Local rescue volunteers from the Kamphaeng Phet Sawang Thammasathan Foundation quickly arrived at the scene, joined by Mr. Sané Chaimongkol, the district chief of Pang Sila Thong. The incident occurred at a large pond used by locals for fishing. Rescue teams employed underwater equipment and quickly discovered the body of Mrs. Pittinan, 41, who lived in Pang Sila Thong District. Her husband had already recovered their two-month-old son’s body from the water and brought it back to their home. Mr. Suthi, the woman’s husband, shared his sorrowful story. He described how he and his wife had always had a loving relationship, with no apparent family problems. However, his wife was often anxious about her health and their son’s well-being, fearing she would not be able to care for him properly. Just the previous day, he had taken their son for a day out, and everything seemed normal. He mentioned that his wife had woken up around 04.00 to feed their baby, and he had briefly spoken to her before falling back asleep. When he woke up later in the morning, both his wife and son were gone. He searched around the house but couldn’t find them, eventually discovering their son’s body floating in the pond. Village headman Mr. Ritthichai Saentao confirmed receiving a call from Mr. Suthi, who informed him that his wife had committed suicide with their child. He immediately notified the authorities and assisted with the search. Mr. Ritthichai also emphasised that the family had no prior history of conflict, and the couple was always seen as loving and supportive. He speculated that the woman’s recent illness or possibly postpartum depression might have contributed to the tragedy. Neighbours echoed these sentiments, describing the couple as loving and attentive to each other and their children. They were shocked that such a tragedy could have occurred in a family that seemed so close-knit. Mr. Suthi also revealed that his wife had been especially anxious about raising their youngest child, fearing that he might die like their second son, who had passed away as a baby a couple of years earlier. These mounting concerns seemed to have pushed her to make this tragic decision. After completing the initial investigation and examining both bodies, police arranged for the rescue team to transport the mother and child to Sawanpracharak Hospital in Nakhon Sawan for an autopsy, with the investigation ongoing. If you or anyone you know is in emotional distress, please contact the Samaritans of Thailand 24-hour hotline: 02 713 6791 (English), 02 713 6793 (Thai) or the Thai Mental Health Hotline at 1323 (Thai). A routine shellfish gathering turned into a horrifying tragedy in Surin Province when a man drowned in front of his sister. The incident occurred at the irrigation canal near Baan Chalerm Phra Kiat, in Nork Muang Subdistrict, Mueang Surin District. Police Lieutenant Sarakrit Thararak, Deputy Inspector at the Mueang Surin Police Station, was notified of a missing person in the canal at 09:05. A rescue diving team from Surin, along with hospital medical staff, were immediately dispatched to the scene to assist in the search. The area where the incident occurred is a 4 metre deep irrigation canal frequently used by locals for agricultural purposes. Villagers often come to search for shellfish at the site. When the diving team arrived, locals were already searching for the missing man at the spot where his sister had last seen him. The victim, later identified as 55-year-old Mr. Somphot (surname withheld), had been searching for shellfish in the canal when he suddenly disappeared underwater. His 52-year-old sister, Ms. Phai (surname withheld), was present during the incident and pointed to the area where her brother had submerged. After an extensive search, which included local villagers and the rescue diving team, the victim’s wife, Ms. Suk (surname withheld), lit incense and prayed to the goddess of water, pleading for her husband’s body to be found. She implored him not to hide from those searching for him, asking him to open the way for his body to be returned home. Approximately 30 minutes later, the rescue team found Mr. Somphot’s body about 4-5 metres away from where he was last seen. His body was recovered from the water, causing grief to his family, who had anxiously waited for news at the scene. Ms. Suk and Ms. Phai were inconsolable, sobbing uncontrollably. Throughout the rescue, they expressed their heartbreak, saying, “I told him not to go searching for shellfish after drinking alcohol. He never listened. Now, he’s gone. Please come back, I love you.” Ms. Phai recounted that her brother often drank alcohol and would frequently come to the canal to search for shellfish while intoxicated. She had been picking vegetables nearby when she noticed her brother struggling in the water, bobbing up and down before disappearing beneath the surface. She immediately called out to nearby villagers for help, but after five minutes of searching, they were unable to locate him and contacted the authorities. Ms. Suk also revealed that her husband had a habit of secretly drinking alcohol and that she frequently warned him not to do so before going to the canal. On the day of the tragedy, he hadn’t eaten breakfast and had left the house to search for shellfish before anything else. When her sister-in-law came rushing to her home with the news, she was heartbroken and speechless. Lieutenant Sarakrit, along with medical personnel from Surin Hospital, documented the scene. Initial reports suggest that the victim may have experienced cramps or exhaustion before drowning. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-12

Two domestic tourists lost their lives on October 11, due to a sudden flash flood at Wang Lung Waterfall in Thon Hong Subdistrict, Phrom Khiri District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The tragedy unfolded in the afternoon as a group of five friends gathered to attend a wedding and rented a resort nearby. According to witnesses, the group decided to take a dip in the waterfall, unaware of the rapidly changing weather conditions that led to the unexpected surge of water. As they were enjoying their time, a sudden rush of water overwhelmed the area, sweeping two of the tourists away. Local authorities and rescue teams were quickly mobilised to search for the missing individuals. While two managed to escape to safety on their own, locals pulled one person from the water, a 42-year-old woman from Phuket Province, and took her to Phrom Khiri Hospital. However the two other tourists, a 48-year-old woman from Surat Thani Province and a 43-year-old man from Chai Nat Province, drowned and the bodies recovered later.
