  2. Pictures from responders. The incident occurred at a pier in Nonthaburi’s Bang Yai district, a man drowned in front of his mother after his rowing boat was struck by a motorboat, mere metres from the shore. The motorboat driver, an elderly man, revealed that he was too old to jump in and save the victim. At around 19:00 on September 23, Pol. Lt. Wasukit Panrat, an investigator from Bang Yai Police Station, Nonthaburi, was notified of a fatal boat collision near Wat Somkliang pier in Bang Mae Nang subdistrict. The incident left one man, identified as 58-year-old Veerawong, dead. Rescue divers searched for and recovered his body, finding him submerged near the pier. At the scene, authorities found the victim’s overturned rowing boat and the motorboat of 63-year-old Manit, the individual responsible for the collision. Both boats were docked at Wat Somkliang pier as part of the ongoing investigation. Manit recounted that he had been navigating his motorboat to pick up his nephew to return home when he noticed a rowing boat on his left. He assumed the rower would not cross his path but was caught off guard when the man suddenly sped toward the pier to collect his mother. This resulted in Manit’s motorboat crashing into the rower, causing Veerawong to capsize and sink into the river. Manit admitted that he did not jump into the water to help, citing his advanced age of 63, fearing he too would drown. Suriyan, 56, the victim’s brother-in-law, was present at the time of the accident and shared the heartbreaking details. He explained that their mother-in-law regularly sold goods at the Phra Pin 3 market, and Veerawong would row out to pick her up every evening. On the day of the incident, there had been light rain as Veerawong neared the pier, only a few metres away. Suddenly, the motorboat struck him head-on, causing him to fall into the water and disappear before their eyes. Suriyan shouted to Manit, urging him to jump in and help, but the driver remained on the boat. From his vantage point at a nearby house, Suriyan admitted he too was hesitant to dive in, as the current was particularly strong. He quickly rowed across to the scene, but by then, his brother-in-law had already drowned. Suriyan urged all boat operators to slow down, be more cautious, and pay attention to their surroundings to prevent future tragedies. "Most boats on the Bang Yai canal are long-tail boats or small local vessels. We must be careful," he said. Police officers are currently gathering statements from witnesses and have sent both boats to forensic experts to examine collision marks and determine liability. Manit will undergo further questioning as the investigation continues. -- 2024-09-24

  6. Picture courtesy of Thai PBS A vocational school in Chumphon's Mueang district was shaken on September 23, when a teacher suffering from mental health issues brandished an air gun and threatened students and staff. The incident ended without injury as police were able to safely apprehend the teacher after a tense one-hour standoff. Local police received an emergency call early morning, reporting that a teacher at the school appeared agitated and was wielding a weapon. The teacher, later identified as "Mr. K," a 59-year-old instructor in automotive mechanics, was seen walking near the school's flagpole, holding the air gun in a threatening manner. Both teachers and students had been preparing for a school meeting when the situation unfolded. Responding swiftly, police and emergency services arrived on the scene and cordoned off the area, evacuating students, staff, and parents to safety. Efforts to negotiate with Mr. K were initially unsuccessful, as he aimed the air gun at police and school administrators, forcing them to take cover behind nearby vehicles. After more than an hour of negotiation, Mr. K finally agreed to lay down his weapon and was taken into custody. Upon inspection, police confirmed that the gun was an air gun firing plastic pellets. The teacher was promptly transferred to Chumphon Hospital for treatment. A school administrator revealed that Mr. K had long been battling mental health issues, requiring consistent medication. He had been assigned to manage the school’s sound system, but frustration reportedly arose when he found the equipment room locked this morning. The teacher’s agitation escalated, leading to the incident. Though the air gun was not lethal, the staff feared that Mr. K might use it to harm students or damage property, prompting the call to authorities. One concerned parent expressed their fears for student safety, questioning why someone with known mental health challenges continued to teach. "The school should reconsider giving such high-pressure responsibilities to someone in Mr. K's condition," they said. Mr. K is due to retire next year, but today’s event has raised concerns about the school's policies and safety measures in managing mental health in the workplace. The police are continuing their investigation. -- 2024-09-24

  10. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. An incident occurred in Bangkok on September 23, when a 14-year-old girl fatally stabbed her grandmother following a heated argument. The grandmother, known for her alcohol abuse, had been verbally abusive toward the girl and her younger brother, often accusing them of being orphans. The constant conflict between them tragically culminated in violence. At approximately 14:00, Pol Lt. Pichet Rodyang, Deputy Inspector (Investigation) at Samae Dam Police Station, received a report of a fatal stabbing at a house in Soi Ekachai 119, Bang Bon district. Authorities, including forensic teams and paramedics, arrived at the scene where they found the body of Mrs. Rattanaporn, 48, lying in a pool of blood. She had sustained eight stab wounds: three to her neck, one to her back, and four to her stomach. A sharp knife, about 30 cm long, and a hammer were discovered near the body and collected as evidence. The suspect, the victim’s 14-year-old granddaughter, fled the scene after the attack but returned after about an hour to surrender to the police. She was taken into custody at Samae Dam Police Station. Mr. Jenwut, 67, the victim’s husband, stated that he and the victim had been together for over 30 years. The victim’s daughter, the mother of the suspect, had abandoned her children shortly after their birth, leaving them to be raised by the grandmother. The victim was known for her daily drinking habits, which often led to arguments with her granddaughter. Though the conflicts were frequent, he never expected such violence. He confirmed that the victim had a history of verbally abusing the children, particularly when intoxicated. A neighbour , Mrs. Jannapa, 52, who lived in the same building, described the victim as someone who enjoyed drinking but generally had a good heart. She added that the granddaughter was polite and obedient, although she had only completed her education up to the sixth grade due to financial difficulties. Neighbours had attempted to help the girl continue her studies, but her grandfather could not afford the school fees. The motive for the crime is believed to stem from the emotional toll of constant verbal abuse. The victim had reportedly insulted the girl’s younger brother, calling him an orphan, which deeply hurt the suspect and led to the fatal confrontation. The authorities are coordinating with a multidisciplinary team to handle the investigation, as the suspect is still a minor. Meanwhile, the victim body was sent for autopsy at Siriraj hospital. The police investigation into the incident is ongoing. -- 2024-09-24

  12. Picture of responders. In a heart-wrenching tragedy, a 41-year-old man drowned on September 23, while trying to save his mother from being swept away in the Lam Nam Mat River in Buriram province. The accident occurred at a wooden bridge in Ban Tha Poon, Nong Bost sub-district, where the son ultimately lost his life after struggling against the strong current for over 30 minutes. Police Captain Rueangsak Saengkham from Nang Rong Police Station, along with a rescue team, responded to the scene after being notified of the incident. Divers from the Siam Ruam Jai Poo In Foundation were dispatched to search the river, which is about seven meters deep. After a 40-minute search, the body of the man, identified only as Mr. Theethat, was found 20 metres from the bridge. According to the victim’s 67-year-old mother, Ms. Thongsuk, the tragedy unfolded as she and her son were on their way home after their daily routine of gathering grass for their cows. Riding a motorbike with a trailer, they attempted to cross the wooden bridge when the trailer wheel slipped into a gap. Ms. Thongsuk got off to free the wheel but accidentally fell into the river. Her son immediately jumped into the water to rescue her. He fought hard, pushing his mother toward the bridge while battling the swift current. However, after over 30 minutes of struggling, he began to tire. Nearby villagers tried to assist by offering a pole, but it was too far to reach. Ms. Thongsuk, in her grief, recalled her son’s final moments, saying that he mustered his last strength to push her closer to safety. She released her grip on him, hoping he would save himself, but moments later, she was pulled to safety by villagers while her son disappeared beneath the water. “I should have been the one to die,” the devastated mother said, lamenting that it was her son who made the ultimate sacrifice. Rescue workers retrieved Mr. Theethat's body from the water, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. -- 2024-09-24

The elderly suspect, identified as Mr. Bruce (surname withheld), was apprehended by police after staff from the store alerted authorities. The incident occurred at a pharmacy across from Rai Wanasin Market, where Mr. Bruce was found with a box of vitamin C, valued at 360 baht, hidden in his right pants pocket. According to store employees, this was his third attempt to steal from the pharmacy. On the two previous occasions, reports were filed with the Nong Prue Police Station, but no arrest was made at the time. During this latest incident, staff deliberately engaged Mr. Bruce in conversation to stall for time until police arrived to arrest him. Security footage from the pharmacy’s CCTV system shows Mr. Bruce entering the store using a walking stick for support. He went straight to the shelf containing vitamin C, took a box, and concealed it in his pocket before casually browsing other products in the store. Upon interrogation, Mr. Bruce confessed to the theft, explaining that he had come to buy eye drops due to problems with his vision. He also mentioned that his doctor had recommended he take vitamin C supplements for his health. However, because of financial difficulties, he decided to steal the vitamins instead of purchasing them. In initial negotiations, Mr. Bruce agreed to compensate the store for the three thefts, amounting to a total of 954 baht. However, under the store's policy, shoplifters are fined ten times the value of the stolen goods. This brought the total amount he was required to pay to 9,540 baht. The elderly man now faces legal consequences for his actions, as the case remains under investigation by local authorities. -- 2024-09-23

  18. Yes fumes from VCM can be hazardous and fumes from smoke are hazardous. As I posted above a level 2 emergency was declared, not just for the factory but the whole industrial estate. The EIC (emergency incident centre) was set up and an at risk map of areas was issued, taking into account wind direction and weather conditions. The Thai map was posted above and my translation is below. The evacuation of the factory took place with staff moving to an up wind location and mobile monitoring of the areas around the site was started, using gas detection devices. Air monitoring results are reported negative for VCM. Yes any smoke is hazardous and toxic, so standard procedures like shutting windows and avoiding the smoke was issued. Further monitoring of the area will take place by local Rayong authorities and DDPM staff. There was a lot of smoke produced by the fire, but the holding tank did not collapse and the VCM feed was isolated. The amount of emergency responders required to control the incident was relatively small and the company had an emergency action plan for this scenario. I have attached a safety data sheet for VCM for reference. https://www.shintech.com/UserFiles/files/Safety-Data-Vinyl-Chloride-Monomer.pdf

The incident occurred at approximately 03:40 when the man's naked body plunged from the high-rise building, striking a parked black sedan in the condo's parking lot. The impact shattered the car's windshield and dented the hood. His lifeless body was discovered lying in a pool of blood next to another vehicle. Police Lieutenant Buddhark Sornkhamhan of Pattaya City Police Station received the report and quickly arrived on the scene with local rescue teams. Despite the discovery, neither security personnel nor employees at the condominium could identify the deceased or confirm from which floor he had fallen. A security guard at the condo recounted hearing a loud noise while conversing with colleagues. Initially, they believed it to be a transformer explosion, but upon inspection, they noticed the emergency lights on the sedan flashing. Upon closer inspection, they discovered the body of the man who had fallen onto the car, and immediately contacted authorities. Investigators are working to determine the exact cause of death, while forensic teams from Chonburi's District 2 Police Department are gathering evidence. The identity of the man and the circumstances leading to the tragic fall remain unclear, pending further investigation and notification of the deceased's relatives. -- 2024-09-23
  22. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A recent TikTok post from a confused Bangkok resident has gone viral, sparking widespread discussion online. The video shows a warning sign at a pedestrian footbridge near the Pantip Plaza in Bang Kapi, Bangkok. The footbridge is currently under repair, but what caught the attention of many is that the warning sign is written entirely in Burmese, with no Thai language in sight. The TikTok user expressed surprise and confusion over why a sign in Thailand would only be written in a neighbouring country's language, questioning the absence of Thai on such a critical notice. The clip quickly gained traction online, with netizens offering various opinions. Some called for authorities to address the issue, pointing out potential safety concerns for Thai residents, especially the elderly, who may not understand the sign. Others expressed frustration and fear that the lack of clear Thai-language signage could lead to accidents. Among the online comments, there were varied reactions: "Looks like we'll have to learn Burmese as a primary language soon." "I'm concerned about the safety of older people. Who can we report this to?" "It's an international language." "For Thai people, we don’t need signs to know something's under repair. But foreigners might not know unless it's clearly stated." "In Japan, they also have signs in Thai at the subway stations. No need to dramatize this." Others believed that the sign wasn't necessary, as most locals would easily understand the situation just by looking at the construction site. However, many agreed that more inclusive signage should be available to avoid any misunderstandings. -- 2024-09-23 RPReplay_Final1727005868.mp4

At approximately 16:00 on September 22, rescue teams were dispatched to the popular tourist site of Raksawarin Park, near the hot springs in Ranong Province, following reports of three schoolgirls trapped by strong currents in the Had Som Paen canal. Upon arrival, rescuers found two 13-year-old girls clinging to a rock in the middle of the fast-flowing canal. A third girl had been swept away but managed to swim back to safety. Local citizens quickly jumped into action, leaping into the water to assist the stranded girls. In a remarkable act of teamwork, bystanders threw a hose to the girls, which were about 20 metres from the riverbank. A rescuer was able to swim to the two girls and the hose was secured around them, allowing rescuers to pull them back to shore one at a time. One of the rescued girls recounted the frightening experience, explaining that they had gone to the riverbank to play in the water when the current swept them away. While she managed to swim back to safety, her two friends became stuck on the rock.
