  3. Picture courtesy of Thai Rath. In the early hours of September 7th, chaos unfolded in the heart of Bangkok when a man in his 40s to 50s, allegedly high on drugs, stole a tractor (locally known as an “e-taek”) and led a wild pursuit through the city. The incident, which began near the Makkasan railway site, ended tragically after the suspect was apprehended and beaten by an angry mob. The drama started around 00:40, when Pol. L/Cpl. Prommin Ritchaisong, a patrol officer from Pathumwan Police Station, was off duty and heading back to his residence in Makkasan. As he passed the Siam Hotel on Phetchaburi Road, he encountered a group of local residents chasing an erratically driving tractor. The residents informed him that the suspect had stolen the vehicle from a construction site and was driving dangerously under the influence of drugs. Without hesitation, Prommin joined the pursuit on his motorcycle, attempting to signal the man to stop. Despite his warnings, the suspect sped up, weaving dangerously across the road. The pursuit intensified as they neared the Saen Saeb canal bridge, where Prommin, seeing an opportunity, fired two shots at the tractor's rear tire, causing it to lose control. Even with a blown tire, the suspect continued driving recklessly, standing and dancing erratically on the vehicle as he drove. A crowd of more than 10 locals, both in cars and on motorcycles, followed closely behind. The chase continued to Khlong Tan intersection, where the tractor lost further control, veering onto the median near the Airport Rail Link station on Ramkhamhaeng Road. Despite the vehicle's damage, the man attempted to flee on foot, running in the opposite direction of traffic. He was soon caught by a furious group of locals, who surrounded him and severely beat him. Pol. L/Cpl. Prommin arrived moments later, handcuffing the unconscious man and calling for medical assistance. The suspect was rushed to Panya Hospital, but doctors later pronounced him dead at 01:35 due to severe injuries from the mob beating. A search of the tractor revealed nine methamphetamine pills and a small amount of crystal meth, but no identification documents were found. Authorities have yet to identify the deceased, as no family members have come forward, and no one has claimed ownership of the stolen tractor. Lt. Damrongsak Jaisawang, the deputy investigation officer from Hua Mak Police Station, confirmed that the body has been sent to the Police General Hospital for a detailed autopsy. The incident has raised concerns over mob justice, with the police now focusing on identifying the individuals involved in the beating. CCTV footage will be reviewed to track down the participants. -- 2024-09-08 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

  7. Picture from responders. A fire broke out, at approximately 15:45 on September 7, at a waste leachate pond belonging to Better World Green Co., Ltd. in Moo 8, Huai Haeng Subdistrict, Kaeng Khoi District, Saraburi Province. According to Kaeng Khoi District Chief, Mr. Montree Preeda, the fire started due to an electrical short circuit in a backup power unit. The flames quickly spread to oil residue floating on the tarpaulin covering the waste pond, which spans 5-6 rai, with the fire affecting around 1 rai of the area. Saraburi Provincial Governor, Mr. Buncha Chaowarin, immediately assigned Mr. Montree Preeda to lead the fire response team in coordination with Mr. Watthanapong Pongkittjalert, head of Saraburi's Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, along with local officials. The firefighting operation involved a total of 14 fire trucks, 2 rescue vehicles, and over 100 personnel from various local organisations , including the Saraburi Municipality, Kaeng Khoi Municipality, and the Better World Green Co., Ltd. Firefighters successfully brought the blaze under control by spraying chemical foam and limiting the affected area. By 17:40, the fire had been extinguished without any casualties or injuries. However, as thick smoke had spread over several nearby villages, authorities informed residents from five affected communities—approximately 300 people across 100 households—of safety precautions. The company distributed carbon masks to help filter fine dust particles ranging from 5-10 microns in size. Additionally, the Environmental and Pollution Control Office 7 (Saraburi) was contacted to monitor air quality in the area. 11. Picture of the arrest. A 19-year-old vocational student from Pathumwan was arrested for selling a homemade firearm with a modified barrel for 18,000 baht, claiming he needed the money for tuition. The arrest was made following a sting operation led by the Bangkok Metropolitan Police Bureau (BMPB) on September 6, 2024. The police, led by Lt. Gen. Thiti Saengsawang, Chief of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, along with a team of investigators, apprehended the suspect, identified as Mr. Pitsanu (last name withheld), in a parking lot at a gas station on Phetkasem Road in Phasi Charoen District. He faces charges of illegally selling and possessing firearms and carrying a weapon in a public area without a valid reason. The investigation began when the BMPB’s second investigative unit, with assistance from an informant, identified the suspect using a Facebook account to sell firearms. According to the authorities, Mr. Pitsanu used social media to advertise the sale of a modified .380 caliber gun for 18,000 baht. A sting operation was planned, and the suspect agreed to meet the undercover officer at the gas station. At around 17:30, on September 6, police officers, along with the informant, arrived at the meeting point. Mr. Pitsanu approached the informant’s car to complete the sale. After inspecting the firearm, the police handed him 6,000 baht in cash, with the informant promising to transfer the remaining 12,000 baht later. The signal was then given, and the police swiftly moved in to arrest him. During questioning, Mr. Pitsanu admitted to modifying the gun himself after purchasing it as a BB gun for 1,900 baht from Chatuchak Market in 2023. He claimed to have altered the barrel at a friend’s house and he could not provide further details on the location. The suspect insisted that he had never used the gun for any illegal activities because he couldn't obtain ammunition and that his sole reason for selling the weapon was to pay for his education. The suspect was taken to the Phasi Charoen Police Station for further investigation and legal proceedings. Lt. Col. Teeradech Dharmasutthir, head of the investigation, emphasised that firearms are a significant source of violent crime, particularly in cases involving student gangs. He reiterated the BMPB’s commitment to tackling illegal firearm sales and warned that both buyers and sellers of guns online face severe legal consequences. Those purchasing firearms without a license face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to 20,000 baht. Sellers, meanwhile, face 2 to 20 years in prison and fines of up to 40,000 baht. -- 2024-09-08 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

  13. Picture of the room where the body was found. A gruesome discovery was made in a Bangkok apartment when a neighbour, alarmed by a foul odour, opened the door to find a Myanmar woman brutally murdered inside. The police suspect her husband, also from Myanmar, who is now on the run. The Bang Khun Thian Police Station was alerted, on September 7, to the crime after receiving reports of a decomposing body found in an unnamed apartment located in Soi Ekkachai 83/1, Khlong Bang Bon, Bangkok. The authorities, including forensic experts and medical personnel from Siriraj Hospital, arrived promptly at the scene. The victim, identified as 39-year-old Ms. Suu Tang, a fresh shrimp vendor at Mahachai Market, was found lying face down in a pool of blood. She had sustained severe head injuries consistent with blunt force trauma, possibly inflicted with a hammer found nearby, stained with blood. The initial examination suggested that she had been dead for approximately five days. Her body was found partially unclothed, with only the lower half draped with a sarong, and showing signs of decomposition. Ms. Suu Tang had been living with her 43-year-old husband, Mr. Tun, who is also from Myanmar. Following the incident, he has reportedly fled the scene. A neighbour , Ms. Boonchu, aged 33, who lives in a room opposite the victim, told police that she had noticed a strong odour earlier in the day and initially suspected that a dead animal might be inside the room. Concerned, she alerted the apartment owner. When the they unlocked the room, they discovered the tragic scene. Ms. Boonchu further revealed that around 21:0o, four or five days prior, she overheard the couple engaged in a heated argument. After that, there had been no further sounds or sightings of the pair. It was also noted that their pet dog was missing, possibly taken by the husband when he fled. Forensic teams collected evidence from the scene, including fingerprints, bloodstained footprints, and other crucial materials. The police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify the suspect and are working with the investigative unit at Bang Khun Thian Police Station to expedite his capture. The victim’s body has been sent to Siriraj Hospital for an autopsy, while police continue their investigation into the crime. -- 2024-09-08 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

  16. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. "Maneedang," a well-known villainous actor from the traditional Thai theater form Likay, lost his life in a truck accident in Phichit province. The truck he was riding in lost control and collided with a tree, killing both him and the driver instantly. The accident occurred just a few kilometres away from their destination. On September 7, local police from Srisatchanalai Police Station reported that the accident took place the previous day. The crash involved a six-wheeled truck that veered off the road and slammed into a tree along Highway 101, the route connecting Srisatchanalai and Phrae. The incident happened near Ban Pang Ngiew in Srisatchanalai district. When authorities arrived at the scene, they found a blue Isuzu six-wheeler, registration number from Phichit, badly damaged after colliding with the tree. The front-left side of the truck was crushed, and two people were trapped inside the vehicle. The driver, identified as Mr. Kabin Chuenchob, and the passenger, Mr. Somporn Jansri, also known as "Maneedang," a famous Likay actor from Taphan Hin, Phichit, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Somporn, who was seated next to the driver, suffered fatal injuries when the front of the truck collapsed on impact. Behind the truck, authorities discovered various Likay performance equipment belonging to the renowned Khai Thongkham Likay troupe. Rescue workers from the Srisatchanalai area used hydraulic cutters to extract the victims from the wreckage. The bodies were taken to hospital for autopsy. Pol. Col. Siraphong Koedkunakorn, superintendent of Srisatchanalai Police Station, along with investigating officers, arrived at the scene to assess the situation. Phrom Phaithun, 57, head of the Likay troupe, recounted the tragic accident. He said they were en route to perform at Ban Mae Sam in Srisatchanalai district. His vehicle was traveling just ahead of the ill-fated truck, and they were only three kilometres away from their destination. He suddenly heard a loud crash and rushed back to find the truck had lost control and smashed into a tree. Upon seeing the severe injuries on Somporn's legs, he knew his colleague had passed away. Phrom expressed deep sorrow, as this marked the second time a fellow performer had died in front of him. Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver may have fallen asleep or swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle, causing the truck to veer off the road and hit the tree. This tragic accident has sent shockwaves through the Likay community and the broader Phichit province, where "Maneedang" was a beloved figure in traditional Thai theatre. -- 2024-09-08 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe
  17. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Authorities in Khon Kaen have launched an investigation after discovering 149 Myanmar migrant workers living in cramped conditions across four small houses. Immigration officials emphasized that any movement of foreign workers must be reported within 24 hours, while agents responsible claimed the workers had only arrived the previous night. On September 7, police chief Col. Sarayut Kankham of Ban Haet Police Station, Khon Kaen, together with District Chief Pitanon Panya and other local officials, raided an unnumbered rental house in the Non Kluay Hom community after receiving reports that 97 Myanmar workers were residing there. Additional inspections were carried out at another rental house in the Nong Hai area of Ban Haet district, where another 52 workers were found. All 149 workers were brought together for further inspection at the Non Kluay Hom location. Upon checking their passports and entry documents, it was confirmed that all of them had valid passports and legal entry permits. Officials proceeded to verify the names against their documents, which were found to match. District Chief Pitanon Panya stated that local authorities had been notified the previous night of the workers’ arrival by the village head of Non Kluay Hom, who suspected that the group had been brought in from Myanmar, as indicated by their attire. The workers arrived in three buses and were dispersed among four locations, with 40-50 people in each. This prompted officials to conduct an immediate investigation. Upon inspecting the houses, officials noted that the first house was overcrowded with around 40 people, while another house just 100 metres away held 57 more workers. Two additional locations in a nearby village housed 38 and 14 workers. Further investigation by immigration officials is underway to verify if the workers had entered Thailand through legal channels. It was revealed that two Thai agents were responsible for bringing the workers into Thailand via the Ranong border. The workers had reportedly stayed one night in Bangkok before heading to Khon Kaen for employment. Pitanon expressed concerns over the living conditions, emphasising that housing 40-50 people in small homes violated health and safety regulations. If the workers were found to have entered legally, their agents would be required to find suitable accommodations. However, if any irregularities were discovered, the authorities would take appropriate action. The need for migrant workers, Pitanon explained, stems from certain labour shortages in jobs that Thai citizens are unwilling to take. While the law permits the legal recruitment of foreign workers, all processes must be conducted correctly and transparently to avoid issues like this. -- 2024-09-08 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

The incident occurred around 10:30 on September 7, when local police received a report of a fatal shooting in the Ang Taek community forest, located approximately 3 kilometres from the village. Upon arriving at the scene, police discovered the lifeless body of Wuttinan (surname withheld), a resident of Ban Nongsim. He was found lying on his back in a crevice between rocks, dressed in a green t-shirt, black sweatpants, and boots. The victim had been shot once in the back of the neck with a .22 caliber rifle. A shotgun was found next to his body, which authorities collected as evidence. The shooter, identified as 46-year-old Nattapol (surname withheld), also from Ban Nongsim, immediately surrendered to the police at the scene. He handed over the rifle used in the shooting, which was equipped with a scope, along with over 20 rounds of ammunition. Police secured the weapon and arrested Nattapol while the victim's body was taken to Na Haeo Hospital for an autopsy. During questioning, Nattapol explained that he had gone out early in the morning, around 03:00, to tap rubber trees. Unaware that the victim was also in the forest, Nattapol saw movement near the rocks about 20 metres away. Mistaking the figure for a civet, a nocturnal mammal commonly hunted in the area, he fired a single shot through the scope of his rifle. Upon approaching the spot, he was horrified to find that he had fatally shot Wuttinan, a fellow villager. Panicked, Nattapol immediately notified the victim’s family, who then contacted the authorities. He did not attempt to flee the scene. The police have since charged Nattapol with "causing death by negligent use of a firearm," and further investigations are underway. -- 2024-09-08 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

  25. Pictures courtesy of Workpoint. A violent altercation among drinking companions turned deadly early morning when a man was fatally stabbed following a heated argument. The incident took place on Lam Khu Wai Bridge, Sri Ping Mueang Road, Soi 3, Chang Klan Subdistrict, Chiang Mai City. The confrontation escalated after Natthawut (last name withheld), 23, allegedly slapped Pornchai (last name withheld), 32, and forced him to buy more alcohol and food. Angered by the disrespect and physical assault, Pornchai retaliated, ultimately chasing down Natthawut and stabbing him multiple times, resulting in his death. Emergency responders from Lanna Rescue Association and Chiang Mai Medical Center arrived at the scene to find Natthawut bleeding heavily from stab wounds under his left armpit. Despite their efforts to revive him, the victim succumbed to his injuries. Local police, led by Lieutenant Colonel Krirkchai Kitti, were called to investigate the incident, which began as a drinking session by the bridge. After the bars closed, Pornchai and another friend, Yutthana (last name withheld), 30, continued drinking at the scene. Around 20:00 Natthawut arrived and confronted the group after seeing his father, Si Saeng (last name withheld), intoxicated and lying by the roadside. An argument ensued, with Natthawut slapping Pornchai and demanding he buy more alcohol. Tensions mounted, and after the victim became intoxicated, Pornchai seized a kitchen knife from his motorcycle and stabbed him. Natthawut fled into the nearby community, but Pornchai pursued him, ultimately catching up and delivering additional blows until the victim collapsed. Local witnesses reported hearing Pornchai threaten anyone who tried to intervene. "If anyone helps, I'll harm them too," he allegedly shouted, leaving residents too afraid to assist. After the assault, Pornchai surrendered to police, stating, "I'm a man—I did it, and I'll take responsibility." Police have arrested Pornchai on charges of intentional murder, while *Yutthana* is being treated as a witness, as he did not participate in the attack. Lieutenant Colonel Krirkchai confirmed the fatal stabbing stemmed from the earlier argument in the drinking circle, with the victim being pursued and beaten to death as he attempted to flee.
